    3. Hi everyone, As we are talking about Davies, I have a William Davies born Kinnersley, Herefordshire 1854. He married Esther Morgan at Libanus Chapel Treherbert in 1879. Their daughter Emily Davies was my grandmother. I have tried to trace William;s parentage but only have the fact that his father was James Davies. If anyone is looking for this line of Davies please let me know. Best wishes Sue in Suffolk

    3. Richar and Pam Thank you for the follow-up. It is also possible that he added the "Steart" to distinguish himself from another Charles Davies in the area. "Charles Davies" is probably a common name combination. 3. ________________________________ From: "[email protected]" <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Tue, November 30, 2010 8:00:57 AM Subject: POWYS Digest, Vol 5, Issue 325  I appear to have deleted too much and landed in the wrong digest. Nevertheless,  I am trying to answer the question on the origin of Davies's. While working on the origin of Griffithses of Cardigan, I came into contact with a David Herbert of Powys Castle.  His answer to the origin of the Davieses was the River Tafys.  There are many river Tafyses and some of them are hidden. There is also a River Taff that flows from Merthyr to Cardiff.  This may be a source of Taffies - Davies.   The T and f correspond to the D and v in English.  The celts do not believe in joining two consonants except to make a different sound.   Sir Francis Drake was born near Tavistock on the river Tavy in Devon.  If you look at the census around Tavistock, you will find many Davies, Davy and Davis.   My wife's great grandmother was an Elizabeth Davies who may have originated from Aberteifi (Cardigan).   Judging by the number of Davieses emanating from Llanllwchaiarn on the river "Severn or Sabrina", the original name, pre-Roman, was Tafys.   My ancestor may well have originated from there.   I was born in Townhead, Glasgow, I enjoy going to Edinburgh and asking for my tartan.   I won't give the reply that I get!    I have found a number of Davieses in Ayrshire. that may be related to my ancestors!  (Logan's). Before anybody start's jumping to conclusions,  I will point out that my father was born in Merthyr but I cannot claim to be a Merthyr Taffy.   My great grand mother may have been a Merthyr Taffy but I am claiming an original Davies from Llanllwchaiarn.  Hoping, that nobody will be able to pronounce it! My father chose two Scottish Christian names for me, Robert and Edward as Davies was such a common name.   It has been pointed out that several million Welsh men may have had the same idea. The query was submitted by Trish Tyler who is seeking information of an ancestor named Frederick Morgan, who apparently had connections with the refurbishment of the military barracks in Brecon in the 19th century. To review details of the problem, go to the website's home page (www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wlsbfhs/), follow the 'Resources' link, then the 'Can You Help?' link. 3. Hello Dorothy. My John Jones b 1836 somewhere in Llanfair Caereinion (I've narrowed it down to three families from the 1841 census) married Ann Jones b 1835 in Llanwyddelan thereby creating a JonesJones dilemma. My postings for help on here have disappointingly produced no replies. Searches over the years for the marriage records have drawn a blank like the birth records and there is some chatter around the records having been destroyed but no confirmation of this. Neither the Powys nor the Montgomery associations have any records for Llanwyddelan for the relevant dates. Our family migrated from Welshpool to Llandudno sometime just after 1871 - the legend is Ann and the children walked there, John was already there having gone there for seasonal taxi work. Ann appears to have died sometime before 1891 and John sometime in 1903. I'm in the process of picking up those trails. Interestingly, we too have a Miriam - rather famous in Llandudno as Miriam yr Ogo because she and her family lived in a cave on the Great Orme. Heddwch Mike. 3. Hi Tim Expected to find the DAVIES lineage was Welsh - and undaunted researched all the Charles Davies about the same age- but somehow it didn't work! Out of the blue, I had an internet message from someone in St Helens Lancashire, whose relative had married a Charles Stewart Davies - and they were house builders there and not Welsh. I wasn't convinced until I then discovered that this lady was his second wife and they had married in Brighton!- and she had been an assistant in his business in Llandrinod Wells...the first wife had died! So I don't think there's a link between your William Davis and Charles Stewart Davies Richard & Pam ps Still not found out why he called himself Charles STEWART Davies as he was born Charles Davies in St Helens, and became a masseur in South Wales - only changing his name when he came to Llandrinod Wells. Also he moved his family to Stoke on Trent soon after his son John was born in 1842, and the earliest info I have of them is in the Stoke on Trent census of 1851. 3. Good evening, Thanks to the advice of Rhian I have sent for the marriage certificate for David Pritchard and Ann Philpots June qtr 1842 Crickhowell. As soon as I had sent for it I wondered if Ann ,on marrying David, would have done so under her maiden name or the name of her first husband? If it's the latter,I would still need her maiden name ,as it's her line I am chasing. Can anyone help me, please? In the 1851 census her age is given as 42 and born in "Vernog" (my interpretation) but transcribed as "Kernog". Can anyone find her birth or baptism, or possible first marriage? Thank you Roy

    3. Hi sorry to here that you are disapointed with the low list traffic, I follow the list every day in the hope that some idea might turn up and lead me into another reasearch route. I recently sent an e-mail which was not posted but it was only in responce to your request for more activity.  The e-mail just listed my interest which I will repeat ;- John & Anne DAVIES Glascwm area pre 1837 Reece & Catherine Bowen [nee PRICE  b] PRE 1849. Married in the Baptist Chaple Kington Charles PRICE pre 1841 Reece BOWEN pre 1841 Rees EVANS pre 1841 married Eliza Victoria DAVIES M 24/11/1860 St Davids church Glascwm[ he may have been from Colfa. David EVANS his wife was possibly Elizabeth both fron Colfa. Found them on the 1841 census with children Elizabeth,John and Rees no trace of this family on the 1851 census and no comfirmed date of any deaths. As you can see all are very popular Welsh names which dose not help. Regards Di Jones

    3. Hi, As John Ball says there is very little activity on the list I wonder if I could ask a question. I have a 3 x gt aunt called Rachel Maddy who was baptised 1801 in Llyswen Church to Evan Maddy and Ann (Penry) Maddy. She had a brother Evan Maddy also baptised Llyswen Church 1803. I have all the information relating to Evan but not Rachel. I have not been able to find any marriage for Rachel. Her mother died in 1815 when she would have been around 14. The only thing I have found is that there was a Rachel Griffiths living at House at Tregoyd Mill in the 1841 Census for the Hundred of Talgarth who would have been around the right age of 38. Her age actually has a question mark against it. There was a John Griffiths aged 55 also living there who was an agricultural labourer, and a Thomas Griffiths aged 10. As my Rachel Maddy's grandmother was living at Tregoyd when she passed away in 1806 I wondered if there might be a connection and this might be my Rachel married to John Griffiths. If anyone is chasing Griffiths family perhaps they have a Rachel in their family tree who fits the bill. If so I would be grateful to hear from them. With best wishes. Sue in Suffolk

    3. Dear Listers... If you are not too busy!...I'm trying to tie up loose ends....and wondered if anyone out there could help . 1.Greenwoods of Llanbister Powys They were a farming family in the 18th and 19th centuries, and I have their bmd from local parish church - and to cut a long story short - one of their descendents returned from Ontario Canada in the early 1890's to become Viscount Hamar Greenwood of Llanbister in the 1920's. t's known that he re-visited Wales on his migration back to the home country c 1893 : he had little money though he had a Canadian law degree - and probably called on his great aunt Adeliza* - who was married to a successful grocer/draper John Clee in Knighton. It's thought that Hamar may have earned his keep giving lectures on Temperance. Were there any local records about Temperance in this part of Wales or nearby Shropshire? Are there any newspaper reports about him in Wales at this time on temperance meetings? Also at the outbreak of WW1, he was a " celebrity " involved in recruiting for The South Welsh Borderers as he was their Lieutenant Colonel until the regiment went to France in 1915 : only briefly served in France, before he served under Lord Derby at the War Office to get more "volunteers" / organise compulsory recruitment. c 1916. Again any newspaper reports etc? (We visited Brecon cathedral some years ago where there is a chapel dedicated to the memory of the SWB and a commemorative plaque with his name) Any help welcome! 2. Charles Stewart Davies* in Llandrinod Wells He was involved in the late Victorian successful "spa town" tourist trade! as a hotel proprietor and as an electro mechanical masseur in Park Terrace..... Always wondered what kind of equipment was used in this practice! Anyone got any ideas or know details of such equipment ? We last visited the old spa and archives there some 10 years ago. Finally Charles Stewart was a founder member of Llandrinod Golf club - on previous enquiries we didn't find any more information, though think a history of this club was being prepared. Possibly photos would have been taken of the founders etc?... and ended up in magazines/newspapers Hope this is of interest! Richard and Pam (nee Clee) in Surrey * Our family connection

I do prefer to keep my membership of the list just in case someone offers a rare piece of information that interests me. But chatting for te sake oif chatting, sorry no. Currently there are 436 members subscribed to the List, the same as last month's figure. With Christmas intervening, it's unlikely there will be a significant increase in list activity in December, but we live in hope!
