    3. Hi Sam, If you don't get another response from the list, you might try an old-fashioned approach, and send a letter to the editor of the newspaper in Bristol. In the days prior to email, I had great success that way. Just a short letter explaining who (and why) I was seeking, and some sort of contact information, resulted in a wonderful reply. If Alun Ashton himself does not see your letter, somebody who knows him might! (An internet search, and/or your local public library, will provide the name of the appropriate newspaper.) (My "people" were in Dorset. I contacted the Denver Public Library, and was given info for two newspapers. I picked one to write to; it turned out to be a weekly rather than daily, and led to the discovery of a previously unknown cousin -- who read the newspaper after she returned from holiday!) Good luck! It's hard with google too, as it seems most interested in bringing up sites for accomodation and real-estate. 3. Hello Liz. Same with me. The records I want aren't available online. I've been trying to get to Aberystwyth for at least five years now (from Norfolk UK) but increasing limits on mobility have sabotaged plans every time. Perhaps there's a need for a campaign to press for greater accessibility to genealogical records for disabled people. Maybe a chat with the Equality and Human Rights Commission after the holiday is on the cards. Heddwch Mike. 3. Hi Everyone I just joined the list recently, and wonder if anyone is researching families who'd lived in Aberyscir. I did a search of the Archives, and couldn't find any postings about it. My g-g-g-grandfather was Reverend David Jones (1775 - 1861) who was the rector of St Mary's (or St Cynidr's) there. The censuses say that he was born at Aberyscir. His father might have been Rev John Jones, who was the preceeding clergyman, & David's wife was Margaret Morgan from Egwysilan. Is anyone else researching this Jones family, or these Morgans? In an old family will, there are mentions of The Manor of Aberyscir, Maesyvaynor Farm and some further 6 farms in Brecon with indecipherable names (to me anyway!). Does anyone know anything of the history of these two properties in particular, or where I can find out? I know that Maesyvaynor was leased by my family (Davies) to Josiah Guest and that now there's a town there, but that's all. Thank you very much - I'm in Australia. Cheers Liz Parkinson

    2. Margaret Crouch
    3. Can anyone help me sort out this puzzle? My g g grandfather was named John Davies and was born at Beacons/ Beccwns farm near Gelligaer in Glamorgan in about 1812. He married a Jane Watson in Gelligaer in 1842 though on the marriage certificate he gives his name as John Williams . They went to farm at Llandetty and then at Bodwigiad , Penderyn. The 1851 census has the family of John and Jane Williams living at Bodwigiad farm with their children Llewelyn (after his grandfather), Elizabeth  and Gwenllian, all with the surname Williams. However  their next child George was born at Bodwigiad in November 1852 and his birth certificate gives his surname as Davies and his parents as John Davies and Jane Davies formerly Watson. The 1861 census has Jane Davies as head of the household at Beccwns farm with no husband but with 2 more children, both born at Gelligaer, Glamorgan. I believe that Llewelyn Davies, father of John who changed his name then changed it back, was buried at Vaynor churchyard but when I went to look for his grave I couldn't find it. I did however find the grave of Llewelyn's son, John's brother, another Llewelyn who kept the Mount Pleasant Inn at Pentwyn, Vochriw, so I think there must be some family connection with Vaynor. Has anyone listed the Monumental Inscriptions for Vaynor Churchyard? Can anyone think of an explanation for the change of name and then the change back to what it was originally? Margaret

    3. Hi List, Seeing John's comments on list activity, how about a new game called, "Lost - but not found." Rather than chasing missing ancestors, lets chase siblings who disappear. These are very often initially found after a search of a census or parish register. The idea is that you submit details in a logical way so that search engines can pick them up easier. For example, I have: In Meifod, Robert HUMPHREYS and Mary JONES had 3 children: Sorted: John Roberts HUMPHREYS, born 1839. (Surname later becomes HUMPHRIES) Missing: Elizabeth HUMPHREYS, born 1841. Last seen as a Dairy Maid, 1861, in Hannington in Wiltshire Missing: Mary Jane HUMPHREYS, born 1842. Last seem as a House Maid, in 1861, in Hannington in Wiltshire Missing: Joseph HUMPHREYS, born 1847, in Welshpool. Last seen as a House Painter, in 1901, Longsight, Manchester Cheers Mike

    1. [POWYS] Welsh translation please
    2. Hello listers I wonder if anyone can help me with the translation of a few lines of a poem by Lewis Glyn Cothi. I have seen a translation of this somewhere, but now can find it nowhere on the web. I am looking for a suitable verse of poetry to put on my father's memorial, and I remember that these lines said something about the shelter provided to Cothi by Cwmbiga, my father's birthplace. I think I am interested in lines 7 to 10, or possibly lines 5 to 8 of the following stanzas. So many of the words are archaic that it's impossible to try and translate it using online translation sites. Minnau yn y man yno Drwy vedw'r allt a roav dro; I dy Maredydd y dov, Lle'r eurir llawer erov'; Ac yno tario hyd dydd I Bennant Bacho beunydd.
