Good evening, I have been searching for the birthplace of my great,great,g/father, James Richards. In every census, from 1841 to 1871,his birthplace is given as Monmouthshire, and what looks like Bryngwyn...always indistinct! by using a modern Gazeeter,I have only found one place that resembles it. Bryngwyn ,Powys, just off the B2594. James was born 1808 and married Ann Edwards (b.c1815) at Lugwardine Herefordshire, 5/4/1834. I have been unable to find James' birth or baptism any where. Can someone help, please? Thank you Roy Davies

Hello Alison, It began with the marriage of John Farr and Mary Davies on June2 1843 at the Church of Llandewicwm.John,a labourer lived at Rhydwillim.Mary a spinster (carpenter`s daughter) lived at Croswin .witnesses John Evans and Margaret Jones. The 1841 Census for Llangammarch shows that Mary already had a son ,William Davies. Gwen Davies 70,pauper,Mary Davies 25,pauper,William2,pauper.(How heartbreaking is that?). As Gwen is 70 she could be Mary`s mother or grandmother. William`s birth certificate shows he was born on the 15June 1839 at Pantyronen,Treflys,Llangammarch. The birth was registered on 25June by Gwen Davies occupier, Pantyronnen. There is no father named. When Gwenllian died on 26Dec 1844 at Newhouse aged 77 her death certificate shows her to be the widow of Rees Davies ,carpenter.Mary gave the name of her father as Rees Davies on her marriage certificate. Alan Powell found four possible candidates for the marriage. Rees Davies ,widower= Gwen Williams1/4/1808 at Llangammarch. Rees Davies=Gwen Williams of Llandwicwm29/12/1803at Merthyr Cynog Rees Davies=Gwen williams of the hamlet of Lysdinam.,Llanafon fawr ,on 25/5/1792at Llanavan Fechan Rees Davies =Gwen Jones2/5/1789at Llandefaelog Fach. I wrote to Alan again to ask him to do some follow up for me but didn`t hear from him so think he may have given up researching.I hoped to find children from these marriages ,then if Mary showed up I would know I had the right marriage. Also one entry might show the correct Rees if carpenter was entered. So no further forward than that but maybe someone will recognises one of these couples and I can eliminate them. I would also like to trace William Davies. He is on the 1861 in Merthyr but lost after that. Thanks for your interest,Alison, Jill in Sussex. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Alison Skipper" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, January 09, 2011 6:32 PM Subject: [POWYS] Roll call (Jill's) - Davies, Llangammarch > Hello Jill, > > I think that we may have corresponded in the past. Hello Everyone, I am hoping someone on the list lives in or near Llangunillo that might be familar with the Rees Williams family of Cefnsuran farm Llangunillo. Rees Williams and his wife Mary Ann Williams nee Price (my great aunt) were at Cefn Suran farm at least until 1914 when Rees died. Mary Ann remained in the area and died in 1932. They had 4 children John Edward Williams b 1880, Mary Elizabeth Williams b 1881, Margaret Ann Williams b 1883, and Rees Williams Williams b 1884. I believe Margaret Ann married Richard Goodwin in 1908. On the 1911 census they are living at Henfryn Pennybont Llandewy Radnor. They have a daughter Margaret b 1909 Llandewy. Thank You Robert Price
Hello Jill, I think that we may have corresponded in the past. Where have you reached with your Davies family of Llangammarch please? Thanks, Alison Malvern, UK
Dear Jill & Mike I am trying to get past a brick wall for David Jones, b c 1850 Clyro according to 1861 - 1911 census. He died 16.12.1921 near Sennybridge, Breconshire. There are Jones families at Cefnybettws & Wernfawr Farms from 1841 to 1911. I have an "In Memorium Card" of Thomas Francis Jones of Upper Lloyney, Clyro who died 17th January, 1928. He is buried in Clyro Church graveyard. I have not yet made a connection between my David & the families at Cefnybettws & Wernfawr. Hi Jill I probably have pictures of a number of missing churches for Pembrokeshire. I was hoping you were going to provide me with images of Haroldston West and Lambston - but I will have to scrabble to find them now. I will need to email them to Seattle. I probably have images of those two, plus Martletwy, Minwear, Rudbaxton, Nevern, Newport, Whitechurch in Kemes, Llanfair Nantgwyn, Meline, Bayvil, Eglwyswrw, Hasguard (ruin), Walwyns Castle, Burton and Dale, for starters. Probably also have one of Pisgah Chapel at Penygraig in the Rhodda Valley - we were married there! Hi Lynne I'd like to get a copy of the actual enumeration page and have access to Ancestry. However, to find the entry you have found which sounds correct, I need to know what the civil parish is. I don't know how to search using the reference number. Thanks Ann, that's the family now found in 1841. Now I need to find them in 1861 and then where to look for an obituary and the wall is horizontal!!! Wonderful stuff this Powys List isn't it. If it hadn't been for an old lister, Julie Preston all of 12 years or so ago I'd probably still be floundering around. As it is the discovery of Thomas and his ancestors led me to a wonderful discovery that has taken me time travelling back to the Dark Ages! There are photos on line of this chapel in Newtown though, since it was built four years before he died, it is likely that another chapel was on or near the site. This is likely the chapel he attended for so many years. The above information came from the 1851 and 1881 census and his son, W P Jones' obituaries in local newspapers. Details of Thomas' death came from the family sarcophagus at St David's Parish Church yard in Newtown as did his wife's and their children Sarah and Ellis. So finally, he would appear to have been a fairly prominent man in the area for many years if one can judge anything from the family sarcophagus outside the West door at St David's Church. Hence I would have expected that I might find an obituary. Can anyone advise on where I might expect to find such a thing if it exists? I hope I haven't bored folks to death with my questions and would appreciate help or advice. Hi Sue On the 1841 census David (aged 40) said he was born in Cwngwybedog and they are living in" Enumeration District No. 8, all that part of the said Parcel of Prisk (sic) from Beaufort Turnpike road to Blaenonney comprising a part of Waungoch, Cwngwybedog & Cwm maenheulog", also living with them is an Andrew Posser aged 80, so I don't know if he is David's father or Mary's father as the 1841 census does not have relationship to head of house. David had died by the 1851 census and Mary and her children are living in Crickhowell. Mary also says on the 1841 census that she was born in Cwngwybedog also. I am so confused with all the different names and can't find some on the maps. I am sorry I don't know very much about David Prosser except that he married Mary Prosser I don't even know when/where they married. They seemed to be around the areas of Llangattock, Cendl. I know that one of their daughters Martha Prosser married Samuel James in Llangattock Brecon in 1855 and they both said they lived in Beaufort on the marriage certificate. I notice that Llanfihangel tal y llyn is not that far from Crickhowell and Llangattock, so they could be related. I have been stuck at this brick wall for many years and would love to break it down. Another one of their daughters Martha married Samuel James in 1855, Samuel James' father was John James. If you have come across any of these names in your research I would love to hear from you. Happy New Year to all listers. The Christmas holiday has given me a chance to tidy up a few odds and ends and to review the still open questions that I have unanswered in my Jones Family history. I would be most grateful for your indulgence in trying to answer one or two questions about my first gap in knowledge. Working backward in time my first missing info occurs for my Great Great Grandfather Thomas Jones. I know quite a lot about him already thanks to his son, William Peter Jones, my Great Grandfather's obituary in 1931. This came from two local newspapers though as my ancestors cut the pages out, I'm unable to ascertain which papers. I also have some of the census information from 1851 and 1881 2 years after his death on 2nd June 1878. These show some of his movements, though I have been unable to locate him in 1841. What follows seems to suggest he and his family were then living at Pynt yr Afon, though I have been unable to find it in the census. So my first question is can anyone advise me on Thomas' home in the 1841 Census to confirm or deny his living at Pynt yr Afon and it's whereabouts? What my own research so far has established is as follows: Thomas Jones was born at Ystrad Fawr in the township of Tirymynech, Llanbryn-Mair where his fore fathers had farmed for several generations. He was the eldest of 10 children of Ellis Jones and Sarah Peters of Ystrad Fawr. After Thomas' marriage in 1828, he and his wife Mary appear initially to have lived and worked with his parents at their farm at Ystrad Fawr and their eldest child, Anne, was born there in 1829. It is believed that they may have moved to farm at Derlwyn Farm, a mile NW of Carno in the sub- registration district of Llanwnog and in the parish of Llanllugan. Here their second child Ellis was born in 1834. The deeds of Derlwyn dated Oct. 20, 1836 give the owners as: 'Mary Jones of Gelly, Llanfair, co. Mont., widow, Margaret Lewis of Llandinam, same co., widow and John Owens of Newtown, same co., gent'. The mortgage documents on the property held at NLW shows: 'the farmland, tithes, hereditaments and premises of Derlwyn, at that time having recently been occupied by Hugh Richards, but now let to Thomas Jones and his father Ellis Jones at rent of £80 p.a.'. Confusingly, on Oct. 23, 1836 the deed shows the lease in the names of 'Mary Jones of Gelly, Llanfair, co. Mont., widow and Thomas Jones of Pynt yr Afon, Carno, farmer; Ellis Jones of Ystrad- Fawr, Llanbryn-mair, farmer'. The lease is for '7 years of m. or tmt or farmhouse of Derlwyn, p. Carno, now occupied by Hugh Richards, reserving timber, trees, access and planting with compensation. Rent £80 p.a. and £4 for each acre of `old meadow' that Thomas might plough up or till'. The 1851 census shows that the family was resident at Derlwyn in 1849 when their youngest son Evan was born. However, Thomas and his further enlarged family were now shown in 1851 living at Fron Green in the parish of Llanllugan. He was aged 46, with Mary 42, and now with five sons and 3 daughters. There was also an agricultural labourer, Joseph Morris, a widower aged 30, born in Carno and a farm servant, Edward Ashton, aged 22 also born in Carno. Examination of the 1881 census shows a last child born to Thomas and Mary named Mary and born at Fron Green in 1852. Thomas and his family moved to Neuaddfraith, between Newtown and Abermule, sometime during the late 1850s but later moved again to farm the 370 acre Penarth farm near Newtown with his eldest son Ellis. Thomas died in 1878 at Penarth possibly in a house called Valindri, the source of this being his son Peter's obituary in the local newspaper. the latter being somewhat confusing in light of his will. In this will, written on the 2nd April 1878 and proved at Shrewsbury on 22 June 1878 by Mary, his wife and Ellis his son, Thomas was recorded as a farmer of Penarth. In it he bequeathed to his daughter, Ann, the wife of Evan Morgans of Pantglas, Llanbryn-mair the sum of £20. To his daughter Jane, the wife of Nathaniel Owens of Moelddnwyd, Llanfihangel the sum of £50. To his daughter Mary the sum of £200. All the rest of his estate he bequeathed to his wife Mary and his son Ellis jointly and they were appointed joint executors. Despite being a busy farmer, Thomas found time to be Deacon of the English Congregational Chapel in Newtown for 40 years. There are photos on line of this chapel in Newtown though, since it was built four years before he died, it is likely that another chapel was on or near the site. This is likely the chapel he attended for so many years. The above information came from the 1851 and 1881 census and his son, W P Jones' obituaries in local newspapers. Happy New Year to you all. Thank you John for the lovely wild flowers of Wales photographs filling me with hiraeth.
