    1. [POWELL-DNA] Lewis Powell AKA Lewis Paine

    3. Just saw the film "Lincoln," today. Toward the end there is a scene at Appomattox Court House where the surrender was signed. My GG Grandfather Silas Jesse Powell was present. He was a confederate. Less than 2 weeks later the Lincoln assassination took place and Lewis Powell stabbed Secretary of State Seward. What relationship is Lewis Powell to our Powell Surname Family? Anyone know what haplogroup? Thanks, Larry 229909

    3. I don't know the haplogroup because my Powell connection is through my mother, but her grandfather was named Lewis Thronton Powell, named for his uncle, the Lewis Thornton Powell who stabbed Seward. This (in)famous Lewis Powell's father was George Cader Powell. It is not proved, but it is generally believed that George Cader Powell's father was Benjamin Powell. At this point the record is muddied. We do not know which of three brothers was Benjamin's father. However, we do know that George Cader Powell married his second cousin, and we know that her great grandfather was Moses Powell, and from there on back to John Powell who came to Jamestown aboard the Swallowe in 1609. 3. Just a note of interest on the subject of Lewis Powell (aka Lewis Paine) and Secretary of State William Henry Seward My paternal grandmother was a Powell from the Gold Group - NC 4  (not sure if Lewis Thornton Powell is in this group or not. Do any of you know?) My paternal grandfather was a Seward ( I don't know of any DNA tests from this branch of the Seward family.) Wouldn't it be an odd twist of fate that both of my grandparents DNA traced back to the same Lewis Powell (Lewis Paine) and William Henry Seward? And, one more thing........my dad's name was Powell Seward.
