When you see trees with just names, no census documentation probably not a good tree to be relying on. As you know Bill finds all the documentation on Ancestry, LDS and any other documents avail to show assure the line is followed accurately on his. Also many people are following papers trees that may have been started by an ancestor years ago before census records and DNA were available to the public without traveling to the area. Being able to follow a census for a family where you see the daughter in one census record married in the next. Then her and her children living with her parents but still with her husbands surname in the next. Then the next census she and the children are back with her parents surname. It is a fascinating hobby that takes care and determination and a willingness to see that some of what you have may be inaccurate, to create an accurate tree for future generations. Oh and Jim does a Great JOB! 300 Powells and his Barretts I truely appreciate the time it must take. ~Diane ________________________________ From: Tamara Powell <homelite76@msn.com> To: powell-dna@rootsweb.com Sent: Sunday, October 14, 2012 7:36 AM Subject: Re: [POWELL-DNA] Our Website AIN'T if fun. I have said for a while that some of these lines are wrong. Would love to know how some of them come to their conclusions. Unfortunately this brings up a problem we have had before and I'm sure this won't be the last time. Kit 251728 (Wal-20 Haplogroup R1b1a2) and kit 107720 (Wal-18 Haplogroup T1) appear to be claiming the same paternal ancestor. It is not possible for men from two different Haplogroup branches to have the same paternal ancestor. If Y-DNA doesn't tell us anything else about our paternal ancestors it does tell us that. I have no idea which of the two kits has the correct line so I suggest the two kit holders get together and see if they can't find a source of the problem. I know this can be frustrating but it can also be very helpful. In my Barrett line there has been an on going discussion about the grandfather of my most distant proven paternal ancestor. There is a group that claims I descend from Reuben Barrett of New England and his wife Lydia Chambers. I wish I did as that would add several more ancestors to my tree, BUT we (a group of researchers) have never been able to find what we considered to be proof of this connection. Finally, after having been using Y-DNA for several years we were able to come up with two men who had well documented paper trails back to this couple and they agreed to test. They are in the same Haplogroup that I'm in, along with several of my Barrett kin, but our Y-DNA does not match. What did we learn. We don't descend from that couple. We still don't know who we do descend from but we do know one couple we don't descend from. There are many trees on Ancestry.com that say we do but quantity doesn't prove anything. It is too bad Ancestry.com has made it so easy to copy wrong data.
