Jim, thanks for your response. The person who emailed me said that the deep clade test would not help me and that I should test for L623+ and L147+. Trying to find out fairly recent ancestry from early 1800's back to the 1600's would be my most immediate goal. John Calvin Powell is our brick wall. We thought we had his genealogy correct until we realized that almost every single family tree on ancestry.com with John in it was wrong. Now, we are at an impasse and would like to find his parents if possible and then beyond. Lauri J. Anderson
For your goal I think you best bet would be to find the most distant male Powell relative and have him order a Y-DNA test. Wait until something is on sale and go for that. The Y-DNA12 at $39 would have been a good deal, but that sale ended last night. Something else will come along about mid-year if not sooner. Your kit isn't matching with other Powells. It would be helpful to see if your kit matched with expected relatives, the more removed the better. I don't think a SNP test will help with your goal. I looked at your matches in the I-M223 project. Your closest matches haven't tested any deeper than you have so I don't see how additional SNP testing would help.
