I am a member of Haplogroup I1 (lime green group). We have group members who have a solid research trail to Douglas Powell, Jr and his father Douglas Sr. Included are kits #166425, 174655, 249237, match with no kit#, and trail that leads to Charles Powell who died 1818 Edgefield SC-who may be a son of Douglas. There is a Douglas listed as a son of Thomas Powell who left will 1757 in Brunswick Co Va. This Thomas is thought to be of the Isle of Wight Powell line. His grandfather was Thomas Powell I, the immigrant. The Powell DNA Surname group shows kit# 33109, 24725, as linking to William Powell, brother to Thomas who had will 1757, and being Haplogroup R1b1a2; another of this line is kit#57355 and is R1b1a2. Then there is kit#107720 which links to this Isle of Wight group and is in Haplogroup T1. Rev. Lucas in his book “Powell Families of Virginia and the South” has Douglas as the son of Thomas Powell(1757) and enumerates some of Douglas descendants, which match up with what some of our members have. Lucas himself admitted the Isle of Wight family was hard to research. Our group I1 task is if Douglas sr is not the son of Thomas Powell (1757), then we have to find the correct Douglas. One other thing that complicates the research is that we have traced several kin back to Chatham Co NC, where some of Thomas (1757) descendants settled. Welcome to any thoughts or insights concerning this line of research. Dickey Powell

We are not, and I truly believe this, from the line out of Isle of Wight. We are from the line that comes out of Gloucester and York Co Va. There were two Thomas's and two Williams in Brunswick Co. Va. One in Capt Walls area and one in Capt Edwards are. The one in Capt Walls area is believed to be Thomas out of Isle of Wight. The others are believed to come from York Co. The Thomas that died 1757 in Brunswick is of our group but not from Isle of Wight and I would bet money on that one. The one that had will 1757 had sons mentioned. Charles* , John, William, Thomas, Douglas and James. Daughters Ann, Sarah, Elizabeth and Mary Green Powell. I believe Douglas was probably the one in southern NC. I think someone has taken claim to him in another group but they could be wrong. 28 Feb 1754 Thomas Powell deeded 261 acres to son Charles and 23 Jun 1756 Thomas deeded son James 261 acres. In 1772 James Powell and wife Alsey of Orange Co., NC deed Thomas Powell of Brunswick Co. NC 260 acres on north side of Fountains Creek, adjoining William Powell , In 1769 Charles Powell and wife Elizabeth deeded 261 acres to Henry Mounger all parties of Brunswick Co. Va. No will or estate settlement was found for a Thomas Powell who died in Brnswick Co, Va in 1750. At same time a will for Thomas Powell was probated 1 Oct 1750 in Isle of Wight Co. Va. and proved 06 Feb 1752.
