Will proven on oath by Douglas Powell and Midleton Shaw. (George’s first wife was Sarah Lanier. He had only one son by Alice.) Will of Thomas Powell 1757 Brunswick Co Va was witnessed by James Brewer and George Brewer, jr. (Among his children were Charles, d.1777, Douglas, James, John) Charles died in Chatham 1777 and was survived by wife Elizabeth along with several children, one of which was James(wife Frances) who appears in several deeds with the Brewers in Chatham. James, son of Thomas, also appears in some Chatham deeds with Brewers. This James and family went to Ga in 1783 was married to Alse, and died 1790 Glynn Co Ga. Some have speculated that Alse was a Brewer, but others have her maiden name as Cotton. Henry Brewer did have a daughter Allison b. 1752, but she appears to be too young to be the wife of James, unless a second marriage. The son Douglas appears to be an ancestor to one of our list members through DNA, if I am not mistaken, through Nicholas Powell, who died 1821 Mississippi. The son John died 1761. So, We have two contemporaries, George Brewer and Thomas Powell, who had son(s) witness each other’s will. It is unknown who Thomas Powell’s wife was. There is quite a bit online about the early Brewers, but so far no connections(marriages) have been found. One would think that they were of some kin, perhaps by a marriage somewhere along the line. Brunswick County was formed in 1720. Parent counties were Prince George, Isle of Wight, and before that, Surrey. Unrecorded Wills of Chatham Co NC – Thomas Powell Feb 1824, wife Nancy, two sons Wiley and Henry, two grandchildren Nancy Brewer and Winifried Brewer, and daughter Sarah. Signed by Mark? Chatham Co NC – William Henry Powell administrator of estate of Henry Brewer, 1841 George Powell (sr)== Chatham Co NC 1 Nov 1780-State iof NC granted to George Powell 150 acres-description of land mentions Meadows Branch of Haw River, John Crow’s corner, Henry Hunts corner, John Tripp’s line. (these men are mentioned often in deeds involving Powell name.) George Powell witnessed deed 8 Nov 1784 of Henry Brewer selling land on N. side of Haw River—Chatham Co NC- (Would be Henry Brewer jr., as Henry Sr died 1778-79) Chatham Co NC Feb 1790 Henry Hunt deeds to James Powell 50 acres, mentions Henry Brewer’s line, witness George Powell. 20 Feb 1796 NC Orange – Charles Powell purchased land in Orange Co NC., part of the estate of George Powell. 7 Feb 1800 NC Chatham-Henry Brewer deeds to George Powell on Haw River. We have an older George Powell in NC Chatham area, who died @1796. in 1790 Chatham census is George Powell 1 male age 16 up, 5 males age 16 under, 1 female. In 1800 Chatham is George Powell 3 males 10-15, 1 male 26-44, 1 female 16-25. We have a DNA tie to Charles and Levi who married Brewer sisters, James,(some or all went to Todd Co KY, including George) and was there an Isaac born 1792? The George Powell in 1800 would be JR., born no earlier than 1774, and that would be him in 1820 Todd Co. I do not have ages for Charles, Levi and James, but 1 seems to be not in the 1800 household. A will for George Powell who died @1795-96 in Chatham/Orange NC is needed. Two Powells not identified in Rev. Lucas book in this area of NC are George and William. They appear to have lands adjoining the Charles/James Powell groups and are also involved it deeds with the Brewer family. Also Powell/Brewer: Aug 1772 Chatham Co NC Henry Brewer(prob Sr) deeds to James Powell “part of land Henry Brewer now lives on”. 66 acres. (these are acres that James never paid for and Henry later deeded to his son Hubbard). 3 Aug 1777 Brunswick Va Thomas Powell of Brunswick Co Va and Elizabeth Powell of Chatham Co NC 247 acres to Nicholas Brewer Jr. (Charles Powell’s division of estate in 1777) Thomas and Elizabeth were curators of Charles’ estate. That is all for now.
