Hi, Pam! I posted that message because, while trying to 'track' down my John Powell who was also here in Texas in the 1830s, I kept bumping into your Powells. My John was in Austin County which is a next door county to Fort Bend. In fact, most of the land grants that I ordered from the State belonged to your John Powell and Dorcus Hughes Powell. I subsequently sent those to Brent Hughes, a Hughes researcher; however, I'm sure he'd be more than happy to send you a copy. I hope you can find one of your Powells to submit DNA because I believe that we might be connected. To confuse the issue even more, my John Powell supposedly had a son named Wiley who died in the revolution...and another one of his sons, Eli Asa -- who had stayed in Tn until the 1860's -- moved to Leon County, Tx which was the same county where James Powell lived. And then we have the elusive Elizabeth Powell (aka Widow Powell) in Fort Bend County. It was at her inn in Fort Bend where Santa Anna encamped on his way to the Alamo. I'm in contact with a descendant of Elizabeth, but unfortunately, she had no male survivors to pass on the Powell DNA. Furthermore, we have Bob's Powell family (Kit #23765) who were also here in early Texas but do not appear to be related to my Powells. John Powell had at least two brothers, a Lewis Powell, who was killed at the battle of Goliad in Mar 1836, and a Wiley Powell, who was my 3rd gr-grandfather. I believe that John and Dorcus had two other children, Aroline & Enoch. Most of these folks were in Fort Bend Co, TX until about 1846, after which John & Dorcus, Aroline, Enoch, and Wiley all are found in Robertson Co, TX. Wiley Powell's Daughter, Elmina Powell Jordan is also found in Robertson Co, TX as a widow with her children in 1850. She married Isaac Baxter Jordan in Monroe Co, AL in 1838. (Elmina is my 2nd gr-grandmother). She married two more times; lastly married to George W Franklin, an attorney who apparently handled various legal affairs of Dorcus, John. and Wiley. I am writing most of this by memory from research that I did last year...most of my stuff is currently in storage. (Just in case I find later that I have mistated anything here :>) I am searching for a Powell cousin in order to perform the dna testing.
