    2. IM pretty sure im an illigetimate powell.i dont care.it is sad to see people be ashamed of things that happened so long ago.we dont know of the experiences our ancestors lived through. so we cant judge them now. alas i have a cousin that knew the secrets but took them to her grave.she hung up on anyone who inquired.so sad.shame has no place in our quest for who we came from. sylvia ferriter. Thanks for such great replys, and you  are both absolutely right, regarding that I left out adoption.  Thinking  back, I didn't mention the Guardianship stuff either.  I've lately been researching the NC  genweb site, and discovered another possibility that is transcribed on some of  their county sites.  I can't remember the exact terminology used there  (bastardy cases?), but there are some transcriptions where women who became  pregnant were ordered by the court to show up and name the father of their baby,  so that he could be made financially responsible, regarding the unborn  child.  Sometimes this happened after the child was born, but it wasn't  unusual if it happened before the birth...especially if the woman had no other  means of support.  Some of the surnames I'm researching showed up  there...on both sides of the court, either as the woman or the father.   Sadly, I could find nothing I could link to at this point in my research.   Maybe later....so I didn't put this in my post either.  Forgive me please  for saving it for last.  Can only figure that we all wish to think the best  of our ancestors, but when you enter DNA research, you'd rather have facts and  correct answers and accept the fact that what you though "was", sometimes  insn't.  I have one exact match at 37 on our Powell page, and 4 others at 67 with other surnames. David Smith....I agree!  We're gonna ride this  bull or have steak for dinner!! I love seeing input like Jim and Jessica  added to our postings.  YDNA research will aid us all, but it's still up to  all of us to make connections and do research on our own to bring it  together. 3. Sylvia-- My family liked to take things to the grave too.. However, my grandfather (Hanford Powell) left us tapes. These tapes explained the why of his decisions. Most of my family kept their mouths shut for fear of the government and things that could and would happen to them if they were caught. My family (so I hear) was pretty well known for moonshine, horse thievery, etc. Most refused to live on a reservation--instead living in the hills.. hiding out, most of their lives. Thus, providing records becomes quite difficult. :) Sometimes, family members make desicions for us, our lineage, in hopes that it will benefit us--secure our positions. Or keep the governmnet from finding them (us). It's something to consider--it might not always be shame. I know my family did it for pride/fear/and to keep the next generation safe. :) Jessica P.S. There was a village of related "Powell's" that were slaughtered some 100 years ago or so.. thus causing an enormous amount of apprehension--tension and fear among those that survived.. The fear began there.> Date: Thu, 4 Dec 2008 17:55:04 -0600> From: [email protected]> To: [email protected]> CC: [email protected]> Subject: Re: [POWELL-DNA] Our Website> > > IM pretty sure im an illigetimate powell.i dont care.it is sad to see > people be ashamed of things that happened so long ago.we dont know of > the experiences our ancestors lived through. so we cant judge them now. > alas i have a cousin that knew the secrets but took them to her > grave.she hung up on anyone who inquired.so sad.shame has no place in > our quest for who we came from. sylvia ferriter.> > On Thu, Dec 4, 2008 at 12:05 PM, David.E Smith wrote:> > > ** Reply Requested by 12/5/2008 (Friday) **> > I got the grill ready!!
