    1. [POWELL-DNA] Possible link to Gordon county Powells

    3. Diane, I have been encouraged by your recent communications on the potential link between some of the Gordon county Powells and Fayette county, Alabama. On 8/15 you posted a couple of messages on PowellTracers. You were outlining how Hosea Butler migrated to Fayette county. If I understood you correctly, Hosea followed the Powells from the Pendleton district, then Newberry, then Anderson county, before migrating with Allen Powell to Cass county, and ultimately to Fayette county, AL. You also posted the 1860 census in Fayette county showing that a "J. Powell, age 28," was living in the home of W. B. Strickland. I note that there were 2 other James Powells in that Fayette county census: The first was James (1786 VA), most likely the father of Reuben and Ezekiel by his first marriage to Frances ?, married 18 Jun 1787 in Laurens district. The problem in making this certain, however, is that I have documentation from a relative that states that James (1786 VA) married a second time in Laurens to Mrs. Leanna Arnold. The census for Fayette in 1860 states that this James was living with Martha Powell (1791 SC). If this is the father of Reuben and Ezekiel, he was the son of Benjamin A., and Sarah Bledsoe Powell. The second James Powell (1859) in the 1860 census was the infant son of E.R., and Jane Powell. E.R. Powell is probably Ezekiel, the brother of Reubin. There was another son of James and Frances? Powell named James. A relative said that "Uncle James lived close to the Mississippi line." He was born in Culpepper county, VA, and married Patty Lewis in the Laurens district before migrating with the others to Alabama. I have not been able to find him in a census. Diane, other than Hosea Butler moving with the Powells to Fayette county, how might we link James Dison/Dyson to any of these Powells? Keep in mind that my grandfather said that the Powells in Fayette county were his cousins. Is all of this eventually going to help us identify the parent-ancestors of our Green group? Do you have opinion on who the James Powell (age 28) is who was living with the Stricklands in Fayette county? Thanks so much, Ron
