Hugs and Hi Hannah..... The best I've been able to figure, DNA reaserch has opened a big can of worms into many folks family lines....as they know them, and have been taught. Then they find that it doesn't match others that they think it should. I find myself matching a known cousin on the Powell page, yet in the YDNA research, I exactly match a Howard, Hopper, and Hooper at 1-67 markers. There were accidents, diseases, wars, Native American marriages (among others), that changed surnames of children. I'm still trying to figure out how my surname became Powell, yet I match only one other on the Powell DNA page at 1-37 exactly (the known cousin). The best thing you can do is do your own research, starting with what you already know, and go from there. Sometimes, you'll have to go forward to find the facts you need to go backwards. You can't expect or depend on the YDNA research to solve all the questions you'll have. That reseach exposes family secrets and opens more puzzles, but it will point you in the right direction. Hope I haven't overstepped the politeness boundaries here. Take care and God bless. Sue **************Life should be easier. So should your homepage. Try the NEW AOL.com. Sue, There is nothing wrong with your post. When people ask about DNA testing I tell them you can use DNA to prove your aren't related and you can use it to indicate you are related. You still have to do your paper work to prove the connection. And you are right. A few people get results they don't expect. A very close friend who thought he was a Barrett cousin found out he wasn't even though he and several other good researcher thought he was. His response was that he was a Barrett in spirit and that was all that mattered to him. He still comes to our reunions and he help recruit others for the surname project. ** Reply Requested by 12/2/2008 (Tuesday) ** Everyone has there sensibilities Sue, but I for one am glad for open talk and explanation like yours. You can't be EVERYTHING to EVERYONE so the best policy, at least as I see it, is the open and honest one. Yes, things change over time and things get moved around. As for me, it's obvious that I'm of the Powell decent but my actual father, (whomever he was), might have had a different surname. The initial test I took against someone who was my mirror twin revealed that we were very distant cousins and not brothers as we had suspected. The other coincidence were simply that, cooincidence. But you would have never guessed it by the picture of us side by side. Our closest male ancestor was between 600-800 years ago, probably in England somewhere. So all of this as you said is subjective. At some point or other you may step on someone's toes doing this, but for what it's worth, keep dancing. Hi Sue: You left out one of the best for name changes. ADOPTION!! In our family we have a child that went into adoption home under the surname of HENSON. Was adopted and the name was changed to WIRTZ. When he turned 21 he changed his name to SHEERIN and married. The children and grandchildren now have the surname of SHEERIN!!! Through DNA testing and legal papers we have traced him to the HENSON clan, real tough to trace this kind of problem. On the same page.. My family, liked to lie about names, especially surnames.. According to some, my great-great-something or other.. :) Came over from the British Isles (Don't know where) his last name was Stewart, and when he came here he was fleeing from prosecution. He ended up changing his name to Powell. The names have gone back and forth between a bunch of different names/surnames/changes.. And on the issue of adoption...My grandfather adopted four children, his father adopted--several too, and before him.. they took in children who needed someone to watch them, and they all usualyl tookthe name Powell. :) Jessica Powell > > Hi Sue:> You left out one of the best for name changes. ** Reply Requested by 12/4/2008 (Thursday) ** Yep, it's a confusing situation to say the least. But DNA testing will, for the first time, unravel this thing for all of us. Eventually. Stay tuned.
