My Grandfather, Hanford Eugene Powell left a tape. A recorded message of an oral tradition. He died in 1991. On the tape my grandfather tells about the Powell's history. One of these is a story regarding Powellstown or Powell's Town, Alabama. There was a surplus of us there and according to him, most of the family settled and stayed in that area. These Powell's had A LOT of problems with government officials.. Ranging from refusing to move to Oklahoma, horse thievery, murder, etc. (Isn't pretty, but true and all of the "retalations" the family did on surrounding people did not sit well)... Soo, the government did a "sweep." They came in and killed every man, woman and child that were part of these Powell's.. (Think tribal lands not "city" and it seems more feasible) and it was in the late 18th century, early 19th.. A few Powell's got away and fled (those who weren't there) They ran to either Arkansas, Oklahoma or anywhere in between, e.g. Texas. These Powell's that fled, hid in remote mountains and other areas (thus, making it extremely difficult to find and record).. Thomas Powell (My great-great grandfather, Thomas Powell was later murdered---don't know exact circumstances as of yet).. and other members are either murdered, or changed their name and vanished. So, my great-grandfather hid in Oklahoma. You can find him in census' with a name ranging from James, Jimmie, Jinnie, Jimmy, Jinny..etc.. fascinating.. but really, really hard to negotiate a geneology.. sooo, sound familiar?
