I thought I remembered seeing a 2 volume Powell book at South Caroliniana Library, but did not find it yesterday. What I found was a 500 & some odd page book called "The Powell Families of Virginia and the South" by Rev. Fr. Silas Emmett Lucas Jr. copyright Nov. 1969 with NO index. I see on the web that it now has an index. It has Powell wills & census. 1) Do any of you have the book with index? 2) Would any of you mind checking the index for "Caleb Powell"s & give me their page number & year or approximate year of birth? I can then go back to Caroliniana & look at the references. After I left the Caroliniana, I went to the county library to access Ancestry.com & look at census & wrote down all the Caleb Powells from 1790 through 1850. Green III 285 Agnew Road Winnsboro SC 29180 803-635-9236 ---------- Original Message ---------- From: Jim Barrett <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [POWELL-DNA] suggestion Date: Sat, 17 Apr 2010 15:04:43 -0700 (PDT) A comment this message.   If you are going to get a "cousin" to test I suggest you try for at least 3rd or 4th cousins from each other.  Get closer cousins only if you don't match with the 3rd/4th cousins.  Order at least the Y-DNA37 kit.   About the Leonardo Andrea files at the south Caroliniana Library in Columbia, SC? http://www.andreafiles.com/ .  James is correct there is only one mention of Powell in their index and no mention of a Powell folder but that is where the 60 pages I copied came from.   How I place people on our web page.  I started out listing people in order by their DYS393 value, followed by their DYS390 value, followed by their DYS19 value ------ and on down the line.  I think this works fairly well.  A major problem with this is two people might match on 66 of 67 markers and not be close because they don't match on the first value.  We can each look at our special cases and come up with what would be better for our group but that same solution could be bad for another group.  I have made a few exceptions.   Why do we have people in our project who don't have the Powell surname for their most distant proven ancestor?  These people have come to me and stated that they aren't matching their surname, but they do have several Powell matches.  They may have no idea why they are getting Powell matches and I sure don't, but if they want in the project I let them in.   Be careful how much weight you put on the Powell branch information.  This only tells us where that members most distant proven ancestor was when they were first added to the project.  They may have been listed as being from North Carolina.  If that members finds out they were in Virginia first their code is changed.  You'll notice that we don't have a NC-2.  It does provide a way to connect Y-DNA results to an ancestor.   Don't ever give up on old fashioned research.  DNA only helps point you in the right direction.  You still try to develop your paper trail.  PLEASE, be very careful when you copy "information" from the internet.  If they don't post documentation ask for it and if they do the verify it. I have been trying to get an idea of how many haplotypes might be still untested that will be in the NC "Powell Branches".  I need a match for my distant Powell cousin's kit which has been placed in a "Powell Branch" that has been named "Powell Branch" NC-31.  I plan to find my distant Powell cousin's most distant Mr. Powell cousin & pay at least part of his test to make certain that I have the DNA of my MDA (Most Distant Ancestor) (Caleb Powell b. before 1765 somewhere in NC who married Dorcas __ & lived in Fairfield Co. SC where he died in 1828 & she in 1835).  There is always a chance that the lab made a mistake &/or there has been a false paternity event somewhere in the line between the MDA & the test subject, until we have a match from another son of one's MDA.  Below I recorded how many of us have multiple tests from our respective MDAs.  A few of you do, but not me.  I guess it is obvious that we all need a 2nd test if we don't have one.  If my 2nd test matches my 1st test as I expect it will, I hardly know what to do next.  Take up a collection to test random NC Powells who know their ancestry back to the 1700s & are not among our listed NC "Powell Branches".  Or, maybe I should just wait & hope & go back to genealogical methods.  I think I need to look in that Powell book for other Caleb Powells & test DNA from those Powells of those counties.  Who has that book?  I know it is at Caroliniana Library in Columbia SC.  -- James W.
