Trying to find out fairly recent ancestry from early 1800's back to the 1600's would be my most immediate goal. John Calvin Powell is our brick wall. We thought we had his genealogy correct until we realized that almost every single family tree on ancestry.com with John in it was wrong. I think what you are wanting to learn controls in part what tests you should have.  Another thing that plays a part in this is what your matches have done.    First, are you wanting to know about your recent Powell ancestors or do you want to know about their distant (1,000s of years ago) origin?  Second have your best matches tested more than you have?   Kit 259817 has tested to 67 markers, but his matches have only tested to 37 markers so upgrading to 111 probably wouldn't help.  He has had a backbone test, but none of his matches have had any SNP tests.   I don't understand why anyone would say a FREE backbone test was a waste of time.   Go to your myFTDNA website, click on the Y-DNA tab and then on the "Halpotree & SNPs" link.  Click on the "Your Match" arrow.  Scroll down until you see the 4 SNPs with the oragne back ground.  These are the SNPs FTDNA suggest you might try.  You can only test positive for one of these and I don't know enough about this group to make a suggestion.  I do know this.  As a results of the Geno 2.0 tests the Haplotree is going to change.  I don't know when or where, but it will be changing and I'll guess it will change before the end of the year.  I would wait to order SNP test.  What SNP(s) were suggested by the contact?   You might consider a Family Finder test the next time there is a sale.  It looks at all lines, but only goes back about five or six generations in most cases. Sure it is.  If I didn't think it had value I wouldn't waste your time or my telling you about it. 1.  It is a good first step for anyone who is interested and it is a good deal at this price.  Get some one in the door and most likely they'll upgrade. 2.  In many cases you can get a clue about a person having a possibility of being kin.  Particularly if you are in one of the rare Haplogroups.   If you are Haplogroup T and the person you have test turns out to be Haplogroup R you know they aren't from the same paternal line.  I Haplogroup R, but my first 12 markers provide a rare combination.  So 12 markers can give me a clue.   If you are one of those people with a 1,000 12 marker matches then it might not be of much, if any use to you. Another note: Lovely Abraham Powell was born in SC and moved to Georgia and then to KY in the early 1800's. My Larkin was born in KY shortly thereafter. Lovely's father is in great dispute. Some claim it to be a John Powell that lived in SC in the late 1700's. However, this John Powell is included in the ancestors of another Powell line that has not been proven to have a close connection through DNA.
