In the published Oglethorpe County, Georgia, marriage records, I found in a quick search from my personal library of printed books, an interesting marriage for a Drewry Powell to a Nancy Dunn on February 7, 1815. Probably listed on familysearch.org site was well. In whichDepending on the time frame and the section of the county in which they lived, at one time or another, any resident might be found any of the adjoining counties. There are about six Powell marriages listed. On 1850 census there is only one Powell household of all women, no men. I am originally from Georgia; my mother was from adjoining Greene County, Georgia. All her lines were in this area of Georgia back to right after the American Revolution. Hence, I have collected copies of some, but not all, books printed on Oglethorpe County. These people might have started out in Wilkes County early then been cut from there to Lincoln on the east or Greene on the south and then into Taliaferro c. 1826. Or any of the other bordering counties. Then Greene and Oglethorpe swapped some land areas. So search the whole general area if you have not yet pinpointed their general location. My Powell line is back in Stafford County, Virginia, where a William Powell and wife, Amey(spelling) _?_ have a son that died c. 1714. I am looking for his origins. My line "daughters out" c. 1755 when their daughter Amey marries Anthony Buckner Thomas. He dies as Anthony Buckner c. 1780 in Halifax County, Virginia. His daughter Winifred/Winnie marries John (son of Francis and Rachel _?_)Edmonds(various spellings) before 1776 in Halifax County, Virginia. The Edmonds migrated to Wilkes County c. 1785 in the general rush to new settlers for land in the area after the Revolutions War. Go to your myFTDNA website. At the right end of their toolbar click on the orange "Order an Upgrade" button. At the left hand side of the new page click on the orange "Order Special Offers". At the right hand end of the Product box, click on the arrow. This will produce a list of the upgrades you can order that are on sale. I hope this helps. Dear Elaine, I apologize for not replying sooner. (My son installed a new email program and it has peculiarities with which I am not yet familiar - your message got caught in one of them! Thank you for the suggestion. My thinking is that the pages went to some sort of genealogical group because of the typewritten "affidavit" about the information in the bible. I'll try DAR. Mary-Gene Page P.S. My line is down from Austin Powell and - perhaps - up to Ambrose Powell. Any connection to your line? -----Original Message----- From: powell-dna-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:powell-dna-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Elaine64 Sent: Wednesday, March 13, 2013 2:41 PM To: powell-dna@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [POWELL-DNA] Austin Powell family Bible - where are the title pages? Mary, You might check with the DAR in Washington, D. C. They collect bible pages and consolidate several groups and then bind them and put the books in their library. The Library of Congress also collects bible pages. I always make colored photo copies of all title pages and pages with genealogical information and send them to each place. However, way back in years people did not have access to copy machines and perhaps they might have sent the originals to either group -- more than likely the DAR. There does not have to be a DAR Patriot included in the bible record for them to bind them and place them in their library. They collect genealogical information on any family. They have one of the best genealogical libraries in the country. And unfortunately they might have just given those pages to another family member and they have been lost over the years, or are tucked away in somebody's drawer, basement, or attic somewhere. I have the bible that lists vital statistics about Austin Powell and his two amilies. He was born 1829 in Adair Co., KY and died Jan 1898 in Marshall Co N. The bible gives details about his 20 children by two marriages (1) Sarah deline Robinson and (2) Emily James Thomson): Granville Coleman Melvine Elizabeth Mary Ella Andrew Jackson Ida Sara Adeline Henrietta Callie Jane Mary Emily Camilla Nannie Betty Austin Thompson William Henry Flavius Milton Pinkney John Eris Lillian Emily Monica Minnie Jimmie Ethel Gipson Day The bible was given (in Tennessee) to my mother by, I believe, one of the bove or her daughter. Before she received it, a genealogist had removed the itle pages but had enclosed a typewritten affidavit that covered the names ithin. There is no actual signature nor is there any name attached to the ffidavit. I do not know WHERE these pages may be at present time; I imagine ome library somewhere. I would very much like to ascertain the source of the bible. It is written n one hand until it came to me - at which time, not knowing what I was oing, I added more family information. The reason I'd like to know is so that I can verify the spelling of the ames; were they written by a contemporary or by the one of the next eneration? (There are discrepancies, for example, in how the current eneration spells the name from what is in the bible.) If anyone should come across Powell family bible records that include those ames, I'd appreciate being notified. To me, a little common sense could be applied. Change the subject line but leave a bit of previous messages in place in order to help the memory. Don't have to have four pages of unrelated - or even related - past messages included - just enough to remind one why we are making a reply. *Former Message* I absolutely agree with changing the subject line and deleting the previous stuff, but it is so easy to forget.
