I have been following the latest Charles Powell discussion and wanted to add my research information into the mix for everyone's consideration. There seem to be several men named Charles Powell that lived in Chatham County, NC in the late 1700's and into the 1800's. Ones I have stumbled across or heard mentioned are a Charles M. Powell, the one that moved to Georgia and died there in 1805, a possible son of the 1777 Charles Powell named Charles and my ancestor. A possibility of four men with the same name leads to a lot of confusion. My Charles Powell is the only one that stayed in NC until his death in the 1850's. If you look at the Chatham census record for 1800 that is being discussed you will see that this same family appears in the chatham census records through 1830. The ages, number of sons, and location match through the years. In 1835 they bought land a few miles away in Orange County, NC and then appear in that county census in 1840 and 1850. Charles' sons continue to live in the same location and are in the subsequent census records until 1880. You may disagree with my findings, but having studied the census records and land deeds in the 1700s and 1800s I think this is my Charles Powell family. I hope this info helps and does not cause more confusion. There may be more records at the Archives that I did not have time to locate. The Georgia Will of 1805 helps with our DNA tie to Adkins Powell, but be aware that that may not be the Charles Powell we are looking for in Chatham 1800; there is a Charles Powell in 1810 Chatham who could fit the one in 1800 and still be alive. There is also in 1810 Chatham another listing for Charles Powell, but this is a Widow--could this be wife and children of Charles of the will who moved back to Chatham? There is a possibility there were two Charles Powells in 1800 Chatham census, but have found only one so far. Jim I am receiving the powell-dna emails as well as the yahoo notifications about the documents recently posted from the NC archives, but am unable to gain access to them . I read somewhere about invitation. What do I need to do to view them? I followed directions on the yahoo email but nothing happened. I like in particular to see the Adin Powell Bible. He's not in my direct line, but in my tree. Included in my line is Sampson Powell, Sr (d 1832 in GA) came to Montgomery Co, later Emanuel Co (now Johnson Co) Georgia early 1800 from Bladen/Robeson Co NC. Jan Powell Whaley

Deborah, My great great grandfather was John Powell who lived in Rutherford county, NC (not Tennessee). He was born in 1808 in York, SC (which is just across the NC state line). He married Elizabeth Horn, daughter of Hamilton Horsup Horn. The last Tryon County bulletin listed an article about John (said he was John S. Powell married to Elizabeth Horn and worked on the Freeman land as a sharecropper). I don't guess you found anything related to this line? They apparently had something to do with the Powell's line in Fairfield Co SC (just south of York Co) because of the McKee/Sizemore connection with our "T" haplogroup managed by Jim Barrett. We all are extremely closely matched DNA wise.. Also, Danny Lee Powell who lives on the old Powell farm in what is now Cleveland Co NC) part of the old Rutherford Co NC is a part of this "T" haplogroup and extremely closely matched DNA wise. Anyone out there with any clues to this group????? They apparently lived along Cain Creek near the Broad River and on the Freeman land. There is an article in the Tryon bulletin mentioning a road crew living close by where Danny now lives that listed a James, Jr, James, Sr, and Horn, so we know we are in the correct area of the state. I would love to hear from anyone who might have something to help us along. My problem is finding out WHO John's father was......we suspect it might have been James Powell, Jr, (great great grandfather of Danny Lee) who married Anna White and they just discovered a cemetery where this James might be buried. We also might be connected with the Powell's who were in Lauren's SC which is just south of this area. And also, HOW do I get onto this site to view the pics?? Help me Jim or anyone else who might know how to do it.. Thanks to everyone and keep working... we will someday find out all this jumbled mess! To: Jim Barrett and Powell Listers, Here I am again. Would someone please let me know if this message I am sending goes out through the rootsweb.com system. Powell is one of the most active lists to which I subscribe. I have not gotten anything through rootsweb.com since late last week though I seem to be able to send and receive other e-mails from most, but not all, the other major domains people use for e-mail. I have had some trouble with comcast.net and suddenlink.net not taking in ten attempts, etc. So far as of this afternoon my ISP still has not corrected the problem. I can get on the rootsweb.com site. This morning I sent a message asking to which e-mail lists I was subscribed. I should have received a message back from that by now. Yet, I have not. I am not a paying member of any of the genealogy sites. Vivian Cates, Alto, Texas 1-936-858-3801 http://www.myinu.net/vcates
Thank you Debbie for thinking of and sharing with the all of us!! Hopefully one of these days one of us will find something that is helpful to you. ~Diane ________________________________ From: Deborah Powell <debbie.j.powell@gmail.com> To: powell-dna <powell-dna@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, May 6, 2013 6:57 AM Subject: [POWELL-DNA] Powell Documents from the NC State Archives Dear Powell DNA Project members, I recently visited the North Carolina State Archives in Raleigh, NC and took photographs of all the Powell documents I found in their archives which are not available on line. I have loaded the photos onto the Powell Yahoo site for anyone to access. You may have received an email from the Yahoo system about this new file. However, the photos were uploaded out of order and I will need a day to reorganize them. Please wait until tomorrow to view. If you do not have access you can contact Jim Barrett to join. Several documents I found provide proof that John Powell who lived in Rutherford County, Tennessee in the 1800's was a son of my ancestor Charles Powell from Orange/Chatham Counties in North Carolina. John left NC around 1834 and moved to Tennessee. The 1860 and 1870 census records show him and wife Ann with children Jr., Martha, Manda, and Molly in Rutherford County, TN. Mitchell Powell lives close by and I think this is probably another son. If anyone is researching this Powell line, please get in touch so we can compare information. The documents which relate to Chiles, Jones, Stanford, M.B., Nathaniel, and John Powell numbered 7 and 10-18 below are my Charles Powell line. I believe the rest are other Powell lines which may be relevant to your research. The documents I found are: 1. Bible records of Adin Powell and his son Ashley Powell which start in the late 1700's. 2. Robert and Sarah Powell of Virginia in the 1700's. 3. 1776 Will of Charles Powell of Chatham County, NC. 4. Burns vs. Clegg 1889 lawsuit against Mrs. Ann E. Powell estate. 1889 Decision against estate, Appeal of Judgment, and Appeal Denied. 5. 1828 Inventory of Brittain Powell estate. 6. 1815 Divison of land in Chatham County, NC amongst the heirs of Charles Powell - Atkins, Enoch Powell, William Brewer & wife Jane Powell Brewer. 7. 1892 Chiles Powell Estate. 8. 1815 Barbary Powell Estate. 10. 1883 Jones Powell Estate. 11. 1863 M B Powell Estate (I believe this is Manley Powell who was killed during the Civil War). 12. 1861 Stanford Powell Estate. 13. 1861 Bill of Complaint by Jones, Nathaniel and Chiles Powell against John Powell. 14. 1862 John Powell Response to Bill of Complaint. 15. 1866 Stanford Powell Administrators. 16. I finished reordering the photos and adding captions to the first page of each document. You should now be able to view them in order and enlarge to read. From: Dickey Powell Sent: Monday, May 06, 2013 12:12 PM To: powelltracers@yahoogroups.com Subject: [powelltracers] Re: Powell/Brewer Connections Here are some Powell/Brewer deeds, ect. that some in our group may not have: George Brewer 1670-1744 will is dated 13 July, 1741 and presented to the court 2 Aug 1744 Brunswick Co Va by his wife Alice and son Howell. Will proven on oath by Douglas Powell and Midleton Shaw. (George’s first wife was Sarah Lanier. He had only one son by Alice.) Will of Thomas Powell 1757 Brunswick Co Va was witnessed by James Brewer and George Brewer, jr. (Among his children were Charles, d.1777, Douglas, James, John) Charles died in Chatham 1777 and was survived by wife Elizabeth along with several children, one of which was James(wife Frances) who appears in several deeds with the Brewers in Chatham. James, son of Thomas, also appears in some Chatham deeds with Brewers. This James and family went to Ga in 1783 was married to Alse, and died 1790 Glynn Co Ga. Some have speculated that Alse was a Brewer, but others have her maiden name as Cotton. Henry Brewer did have a daughter Allison b. 1752, but she appears to be too young to be the wife of James, unless a second marriage. The son Douglas appears to be an ancestor to one of our list members through DNA, if I am not mistaken, through Nicholas Powell, who died 1821 Mississippi. The son John died 1761. So, We have two contemporaries, George Brewer and Thomas Powell, who had son(s) witness each other’s will. It is unknown who Thomas Powell’s wife was. There is quite a bit online about the early Brewers, but so far no connections(marriages) have been found. One would think that they were of some kin, perhaps by a marriage somewhere along the line. Brunswick County was formed in 1720. Parent counties were Prince George, Isle of Wight, and before that, Surrey. Unrecorded Wills of Chatham Co NC – Thomas Powell Feb 1824, wife Nancy, two sons Wiley and Henry, two grandchildren Nancy Brewer and Winifried Brewer, and daughter Sarah. Signed by Mark? Chatham Co NC – William Henry Powell administrator of estate of Henry Brewer, 1841 George Powell (sr)== Chatham Co NC 1 Nov 1780-State iof NC granted to George Powell 150 acres-description of land mentions Meadows Branch of Haw River, John Crow’s corner, Henry Hunts corner, John Tripp’s line. (these men are mentioned often in deeds involving Powell name.) George Powell witnessed deed 8 Nov 1784 of Henry Brewer selling land on N. side of Haw River—Chatham Co NC- (Would be Henry Brewer jr., as Henry Sr died 1778-79) Chatham Co NC Feb 1790 Henry Hunt deeds to James Powell 50 acres, mentions Henry Brewer’s line, witness George Powell. 20 Feb 1796 NC Orange – Charles Powell purchased land in Orange Co NC., part of the estate of George Powell. 7 Feb 1800 NC Chatham-Henry Brewer deeds to George Powell on Haw River. We have an older George Powell in NC Chatham area, who died @1796. in 1790 Chatham census is George Powell 1 male age 16 up, 5 males age 16 under, 1 female. In 1800 Chatham is George Powell 3 males 10-15, 1 male 26-44, 1 female 16-25. We have a DNA tie to Charles and Levi who married Brewer sisters, James,(some or all went to Todd Co KY, including George) and was there an Isaac born 1792? The George Powell in 1800 would be JR., born no earlier than 1774, and that would be him in 1820 Todd Co. I do not have ages for Charles, Levi and James, but 1 seems to be not in the 1800 household. A will for George Powell who died @1795-96 in Chatham/Orange NC is needed. Two Powells not identified in Rev. Lucas book in this area of NC are George and William. They appear to have lands adjoining the Charles/James Powell groups and are also involved it deeds with the Brewer family. Also Powell/Brewer: Aug 1772 Chatham Co NC Henry Brewer(prob Sr) deeds to James Powell “part of land Henry Brewer now lives on”. 66 acres. (these are acres that James never paid for and Henry later deeded to his son Hubbard). 3 Aug 1777 Brunswick Va Thomas Powell of Brunswick Co Va and Elizabeth Powell of Chatham Co NC 247 acres to Nicholas Brewer Jr. (Charles Powell’s division of estate in 1777) Thomas and Elizabeth were curators of Charles’ estate. That is all for now. I'm one of the three people...not a close enough match to help him out : ( Sent from my Windows Phone ________________________________ From: Jim Barrett Sent: 5/3/2013 8:53 PM To: powell-dna@rootsweb.com Subject: [POWELL-DNA] Benjaman Powell 23andMe provided one of the people who was supposed to be trying to help Benjaman three kits which were sent to potential relatives. These three kits proved to be his best matches. The person who received the kits retained control of the kits will not share the match information. This same person has had an attorney sent threats of legal action against anyone making negative comments about said person. During the winter sale members of the International Society of Genetic Genealogy (ISOGG) took up a collection and purchased a Family Finder test for Benjaman. Since then a AncestryDNA kit has been purchased by Benjaman using my Ancestry.com subscription. We are waiting for them to receive that kit. We have been lucky enough to have some very experienced people join in the search. The shorter story is that we are still looking, but we have not identified him.
