Lots of RED, hoping for positive result. DNA has helped so far. No other DNA have adequate close matches to mine 85885. HELP solicited: DNA from a confirmed Chester Co Powell desendant? Joseph Powell, 18Jan1740-26Jan1799 born/died, E.Fallowfield, Chester Co,PA & m: Abt1766 Mary Engle(Engel??) Now it gets interesting and in conflict with many sources. Thus far doc's indicated above Powells NEVER left Chester Co - per many sources. AND its highly the following Joseph is the #3 Son of Joseph (Abt 07May1757-08May1848) & Barbara BEAM/BOEHM.(772-Abt1843), Birthplace of Joseph is un-proven (a mystery). Barbara appears to have been born in LancasterCoPA. Both died in NewSewickleyTwp(BeaverCo)PA. They were married Abt 1789, probably where her parent then lived and their 13 kids (1790-1819) born, which was South of current day Pittsburgh, an area where County changes in the late 1700s/early 1800s had the first 5born in Washington Co & 8 in what was called MiffinTownship Allegheny Co. Probably all were born on the same acres. This Powell tribe moved by 1815 to New Sewickley Twp(BeaverCo) where Joseph/Barbara bought at auction a 236 acre farm. MYSTERY: Joseph origins. One idea: He immigrated (unable to confirm via the available incomplete immigration records) from Baden-Baden(Germany) nearby was the Beam homeland. This per info on the Morman Site. My Coz Wife is the Research Pro, who believes 'naught' without 'proof' and she is/has been digging "long-time-now" to find Joseph. Thus far no reason to think he came from Chester/Lancaster Co exists. FAMILY LURE: per their g-child: Both Joseph/Barbara spoke only German! PROOF: Joseph Husband of Barbara, died 1848, Court records show his estate settlement in 1949 and lists all his kids, Joseph/Bonzo (below)/ included. Wrangled with my distant Cousin a G G G Grandson of Joseph/Bonzo (below) to isolate his ancestors. His doc's list Thomas/John/Joseph/David/Joseph, & the below Joseph/Bonzo. My doc's showed Joseph/Bonzo(below) as the #3 Son of Joseph/Barbara Beam. DNA: Look at 85885, it matchs exactly one other - my distant cousin. CONCLSION: Doc's of my distant cousin are wrong or I'm connected to his ancestors NEEDED: DNA from a confirmed Chester Co Powell. Ideas?? Joseph Powell, 1779, Chester Co, (18Jan1793 WshingtonCoPA-Bfr14Oct1870) LancasterTwp(ButlerCo)PA & Sophia Bonzo (Abt1805 BrushCreek, Unionville(BeaverCo)PA - 1879 Lancastertwp(Butler)Co)PA, Kids as listed below They had 10 children all born in Beaver Co, Pennsyvania Peter, Margaret Lillian, Mary Marie, Edward(?Edmond), Arebelle Bell, Joseph III, Charles, John, Elizabeth Lizzy, Jane. 2. The Ware fellow that I spoke of, if my memory is correct, fought in the American Rev. I think he was a general even. I got his name from some research I did several years ago. Whatever it was had a picture of him and a brief bio. I was searching for someone like him as the Powell book mentions 2 Powell boys who were also Ware 's. These boys inherited some land in VA and the author could not place them with a Powell family. With respect to that John G. Powell. John G. first appears in census that I know of in 1810 in NY. He appears with a Timothy (which no one has ever mentioned here that I know of). There are several other Powells there. I was trying to prove that this was my John G. (and it may be). At the time I found an advertisement for leather goods in the same area for this John G. I decided that since a John G. of about the same age remained in NY in 1820 and I knew mine was in TN that this was not the same person. I would also note that there are several John G. s in the Powell Book. One could be mine as his inheritance expires due to lack of claim in 1834. I think my John G died in 1832 when Archibald and James sold out their portion of the family business to Hezekiah and William Robert. 1832 does turn out to be the date Sam Houston was in TN on his way back to AR for the Cherokee tribe. I had been searching for how Scott Powell came to the family. Just now something came to me. Sam Houston was defended on this trip by Francis Scott Key (I assume of the song fame). William Robert Powell sold his land in Shelby County, TN to a Key from AL. It would seem logical that Scott Powells father knew Francis Scott Key, hence the name perhaps. Bob PS. 3. ** Reply Requested by 7/4/2008 (Friday) ** Hey Caroline, I guess I'm peeking in through the windows again but it seems to me that Willie and Rachael have identified two Thomas Powells who came ashore in about the 1630's if I remember correctly. Assuming for a minute that they were namesakes, could this Thomas be related to them? I dunno, maybe I'm "barking up a tree that's already been hunted" but I just feel that many Thomas Powells cannot help but be related somehow. Of course, as this group has noted, there are many cases here of Powells living in the same area and not being of the same decendency. Until someone tests a little closer to me I'm relegated to "sidewalk" observing this thing and like listening to the radio, occasionally I hear a tune that gets my attention. Because I'm adopted I know more about 400 years ago (thanks to the gold group) than I do about anything recent and it's maddening. Did this "squirrel" switch trees on me and catch me not paying attention. Joseph Powell, 1680 born in England and Thomas Jr, 1684 born in Pennsylvania. Supposedly a confirmed descendent of that Thomas is living in Oregon, but no one will give a DNA test. In March of 1682, My Thomas Powell (1640) purchased 500 acres in PA from WILLIAM PENN and brought his family to America. It is also noted that in 1692, Thomas Powell had joined in the defection from Friends ( Quakers), influenced by George Keith. In 1692, Keith and 48 of his followers accused the Society of Friends at their Yearly Meeting at Philadelphia with "tax discipline and doctrinal heresy" and were disowned. From 1692 to 1695 the Keithaian Quakers held their meetings at the home of Thomas Powell, with George Keith as their leader. Caroline **************Gas prices getting you down? 3. Your John G Powell doesn't match either one that I have. Caroline [email protected] wrote: That John G. Powell is from my line - Bob Powell - DNA bottom of our listing - I show TN. He appears in the Hardin County, TN 1820 Ancestry census listing with his assumed sons Hezekiah and James with single Powel and another son Archibald with a double Powell. We generally use 1764 as his date of birth. He is in the 1830 Shelby County, TN census with Archibald and Hezekiah. William Robert Powell, 1811, TN, is an assumed son also. We have deeds from Hickman County, TN, that mention John G. Powell, and Archibald Powell. I personally think that there are other members of the family in TN at this time. Most of this line moves to TX in 1832, 1834, and 1850. The only known branch remaining in TN is the Scott Powell. It continues to amaze me that so many Powells are in the same place at the same time, totally unrelated. This particular branch has close relationships with the Parkers, McAlpin, Williamson, Smith and other families. James & Archibald came to Texas with Silas Parker and other Parkers. William Robert Powell rode with Robert McAlpin Williamson and Sam Houston. Robert McAlpin Williamson's sister married a George Powell. The Parkers were in Georgia in the 1800-1810 time frame, and in TN in the 1810-1820 time frame. Here is what I have on the Beaver Co, Pennsylvania Powell's: I have no proof of the following, but this is what I have: Thomas Powell, 1640 England & Jane Handley John Powell, 1665, England & Elizabeth Taylor Joseph Powell, 1690, Chester Co,PA & Joan Miles David Powell, 1718, Chester Co,PA & Elizabeth Chalfant Joseph Powell, 1740, Chester Co,PA & Mary Engle Joseph Powell, 1779, Chester Co,PA & Sophia Bonzo They had 10 children all born in Beaver Co, Pennsyvania Peter, Margaret, Mary, Edward, Bell, Joseph III, Charles, John, Lizzy, Jane. If my notes are right, this information came from Dawn Cartwright's book: Thomas Powell in Chester County, Pennsylvania 1682. Caroline

    2. You are another case of these Powells living in the same general area and not being kin. About the 1873 date John Powell, Hezekiah's son moved from Walker County to Falls County, TX. Falls is near Waco. My ancestor Zachariah Taylor Powell received a letter from Chilton, TX in 1902 regarding a refund of his Masonic Lodge dues. He does not appear in any 1900 census that I can find with the kids that claim to be his - George, Luther, Cleaver. He lived next to John Powell in Walker County and I have assumed he moved with him to Falls County before going to Trinity County prior to 1910 (he died 1902 -1910). The general area that John went to was near James Powell's original land grant, though I can find nothing indicating a relationship to it. I do know that despite the Indians having been driven from Texas basically, small raids continued until sometime after the Civil War. I know also that Trinity and Walker counties were under martial law for some periods following the War. Trinity County did not really fall under the "rule of law" and law being "home rule" until about 1905 or so. Since your folks were from AL, it may be that all were in some ways moving away from the oppression, that is seldom verbalized these days, that followed the war. 2. Bob, The wife of Wm. David Powell (Amanda), her father, was in the TX War for Independence and died near Victoria, TX at the hands of Gen. Urrea. For his service, he was awarded 7054 acres of land in various parts of Texas. The largest award or grant was in McLennan county. That is why they came to TX. However, there is not one square foot of it left in the family. Amazing that we are not kin somewhere. 1. Re: [POWELL-DNA] Joseph Powell born 1760 Pennsylvania
    2. You apparently know quite a bit about my line. What bothers me is that I have all these records of early Powell Texans who were apparently unrelated and yet as of yet, to my knowledge, are not related to any of the DNA crew. I have been able to track only Benjamin H. Powell to the Powell Book. Does not make sense to me. I have come to think perhaps the S. of Hezekiah may not be Smith. It is possible the S. is Smithson, however, no Smithson has been willing to consider such a thought. I do know that there is a strong relationship of my line to Smith in that Zachariah Taylor Powell, 1849, married one from North Carolina. Melissa Powell, subsequent to William Robert's (1811, TN) death also had a strange land transaction in which 2 or 3 Smith kids sold her property that she subsequently sold for a bunch more than she paid. I suspect that William R. had a daughter that married a Smith. Shame we are not related. I have had the privilege of knowing a number of Powell men in my line. I have never known better fellows. 3. Skip, Thomas's first wife was Jane Handley, she died 1672 England. They had two sons that I know of, John 1665?, Thomas Jr, 1668?. Thomas died at Sea. Thomas's second wife was: Anna Gibbins and they had two sons ? Joseph Powell, 1680 born in England and Thomas Jr, 1684 born in Pennsylvania. Supposedly a confirmed descendent of that Thomas is living in Oregon, but no one will give a DNA test. Caroline [email protected] wrote: Caroline Interesting is right. Agree with your Thomas & Wm Penn info. Thomas departed w/3 sons, 1 died enroute, another was later born. He had two wives, names unk to me.
