    3. Hello, I wrote a while back regarding my Powell relations.. and what little we know about them.. I've been digging and found out some more names, dates and places.. soo if any of you recognize any names let me know... James (Jimmie) Lee Powell (My great-grandfather) Married to Dora Lee Clifton DOB: 2/8/1881 Thomas Powell (His father) Married to Mary Thomas Terry DOB: 04/05/1856 and from there? I'm working on it.. Thomas was murdered in the early 1900s and a lot of his information from his family was lost. Most of my family are from the southern states. Thanks, Jessica Powell _________________________________________________________________ Keep your kids safer online with Windows Live Family Safety. http://www.windowslive.com/family_safety/overview.html?ocid=TXT_TAGLM_WL_family_safety_072008

    2. jim, thank you for the response - very interesting as always !! just wish we could be more certain about sylvia's grt grand parents just cannot understand if they were from a male powell, why the 3 boys would go by jones in a powell household ??? In a message dated 7/15/2008 6:19:47 P.M. Pacific Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: The minimum number of generations for a 67 marker match would be zero, that is brothers. In the case of Sylvia's great grandfather I'm guessing that the Powell man the Jones boys are living with on the census, sorry I don't remember which year, is either their grandfather or an uncle. I really can't see them being removed from the Powell family by more than three generations. When you know there isn't a connection in three or four generation I would expect to find one within two or three more generation, but that is based on AVERAGE mutations rates and PROBABILITY. If you flip a coin ten times you should get five heads and five tails, but we know this normally doesn't happen. If you repeated this test 1,000 time the AVERAGE would be 5 and 5 but reality won't be. I know this isn't a good answer, but I'm not sure there is a good answer. 1. Re: [POWELL-DNA] Our Website
    2. There is a family out of the Powell Book that sure does have a great deal of names with dates of birth the same or similar to quite a few people you show on this list. Josiah Powell, had a son Oliver that wound up in Walker County, Texas James Powell There is a James M. Powell, born in Pendleton, SC or so he said that wound up in Walker County, TX There is a Green Powell, that I tracked a while back that came to Smith County, Texas. He had kids all over the South and seemed to fit the above family. Allen Powell Did not spend a great deal of time, but has anyone checked this family line against all of the above and below people. The Powell Book did not have DNA and thus has some errors. 3. I think the answer depends on who you have to test and what information you have on the ancestors of your test subjects.  Those of us in the Green group can be quite certain we are related, but exactly how is still an open question.  Seven of us match on 37 markers.  Below are the known most ancient ancestors for our group:   James Powell b. 1759 - 36 marker match, 1 different James Powell b. ca1787 - 36 marker match, 1 different William M. Powell b. ca1805 - 1 exact match, 1 36 marker match, 1 different Josiah S. Powell b. ca1817-1820 - exact match Allen Powell b. 1822 - exact match James Dyson Powell b. 1824 - exact match on 25 markers, 1 36 marker match, 1 different Cyrus Powell b. 1825 - exact match William Powell b. ca 1830-1835 - exact match John Clay Powell b. 1841 - exact match James William Powell b. ca1856 - 36 marker match, 1 different   There's also a Dock McClelland who is a 36 marker match, 1 different but may be a Powell descendant(I think, the exact details aren't coming to mind at the moment).    There are several other groups that are clearly groups of related people.  It helps narrow the search, and if you are and exact match to someone who descends from a man who may be your ancestor, then that dramatically improves the odds that he is, or perhaps even makes it conclusive.  The problem is that you don't absolutes, you get percentages.  A 37 marker match with another person gives you these percentages:   83.49% that you share a common ancestor in the last 4 generations.   97.28% that you share a common ancestor in the last 8 generations.   99.55% that you share a common ancestor in the last 12 generations.   99.93% that you share a common ancestor in the last 16 generations.   99.99% that you share a common ancestor in the last 20 generations.   100% that you share a common ancestor in the last 24 generations.   I'm very interested, particularly after going over these percentages again, to see what we're looking at once we get our upgrades to 67 markers that we recently ordered.   Chris --- On Tue, 7/15/08, [email protected] <[email protected]> wrote: From: [email protected] <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [POWELL-DNA] Our Website To: [email protected] Date: Tuesday, July 15, 2008, 9:36 PM what i would really like to know is how "recent" in time it is or the "least" amount of generations i.e. mid 1800's ? maybe 4 generations ? for sylvia's "missing" unknown great grd f ?? I'm looking for a father for my John Powell...don't have dates but since it appears that my gg grandmother was his first child born in 1814 or 1815, we're assuming that our John was born abt 1795 or thereabouts. My gg grandmother claimed that she was born in SC. Thanks a bunch. I suspect that the two of them probably have a common ancestor back in England.
