    3. Sue,   "Bastardy cases" is the correct term.  Today, just as back then, women have children and don't know or won't admit who the father is.  And men father children and won't accept the responsibility of helping care for that child.   The good thing about all of this is that it really doesn't matter what we learn about our ancestral line.  We are who we are because of all of them.  And finding out something that "we see" as good or bad doesn't change who we really are. 2. George, My grandfather Jasper N. Powell, Sr. graduated from Cumberland law school. I haven't checked to see what year but some time in the early 1900's. That law school moved to Birmingham, Al and I have had several first cousin's and two nephew who graduated form law school there. My brother , four uncles and a nephew graduated from the University of Alabama. My gr gr. grandfather Abraham had a brother named William. He didn't go to Georgia with my Powell's during the 1800's. My Bill passed away in 2007 and I have not been back to Maury since then. We went through the Hermitage once, it is still one of my favorite memories. Ezra's brother named a son after him, when I got into the Thomason Family and heard about Uncle Izzy, I tried to just listen and not ask a lot of questions. Jim sent Bill and me a copy of his Screamer book for our 50th wedding anniversary. His dad was Porter Love. OK, just stay with me me-----Bill's Grandfather's people went back to Rachel Alexander marrying James Bennett. Their Daughter Mary married a Thomason. Vera Niemic has written a big book on Southern Bennett, Massey and Devasier Families. I went to see her last summer, she lives in south Texas. We can not find one of her books for me, but she did copy me a lot of pages about Ezra's trial and all of our mutual relatives. She is nearly 90 and sharp as a tack. She has a large genealogy library in her home and will let anyone in to look at it. (James Bennett was a ggg? grandfather to her). He was hanged. I hope that I have not rambled too much. Powell is my maiden name and we were from Lebanon. My husband's people were from Maury County. We went to Spencer Hill Church of Christ one Sunday. James Uland Thomason is our cousin, we went down to Corinth to visit Jim and Nina. We had a wonderful time. Israel Washington Thomason (Ezra) who went to prison because he was framed was our cousin. His brother was Bill"s (my husband) grandfather's brother. His grandfather was Joseph and he is buried here in Hunt County Texas, where I live. Nell Oh Dottie Thomason tells me that Irene from the Museum in Mt. Pleasant is compiling a new book. Dottie will work at the Museum on Thursday and she will send me the address and tell me Irene's name. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Powell, Gerald" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, December 02, 2008 4:32 PM Subject: Re: [POWELL-DNA] New to list > Nell, > > Welcome to the group. > > Are you descended from the Thomason's of Maury County, TN? 3. Hi Sue: You left out one of the best for name changes. ADOPTION!! In our family we have a child that went into adoption home under the surname of HENSON. Was adopted and the name was changed to WIRTZ. When he turned 21 he changed his name to SHEERIN and married. The children and grandchildren now have the surname of SHEERIN!!! Through DNA testing and legal papers we have traced him to the HENSON clan, real tough to trace this kind of problem. Jim Powell, Powell family Historian. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of [email protected] Sent: Sunday, November 30, 2008 5:54 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [POWELL-DNA] Our Website Hugs and Hi Hannah..... The best I've been able to figure, DNA reaserch has opened a big can of worms into many folks family lines....as they know them, and have been taught. Then they find that it doesn't match others that they think it should. I find myself matching a known cousin on the Powell page, yet in the YDNA research, I exactly match a Howard, Hopper, and Hooper at 1-67 markers. There were accidents, diseases, wars, Native American marriages (among others), that changed surnames of children. I'm still trying to figure out how my surname became Powell, yet I match only one other on the Powell DNA page at 1-37 exactly (the known cousin). The best thing you can do is do your own research, starting with what you already know, and go from there. Sometimes, you'll have to go forward to find the facts you need to go backwards. You can't expect or depend on the YDNA research to solve all the questions you'll have. That reseach exposes family secrets and opens more puzzles, but it will point you in the right direction. Hope I haven't overstepped the politeness boundaries here. Take care and God bless. Sue **************Life should be easier. So should your homepage. Try the NEW AOL.com. 3. Hi again I should have included my kit number in my original post. Kit # 131090 Pat regarding your question about my Y 37 test. It is supposed to be part of my results. Jim suggested that my Y 37 results would not be posted until mid December. Thus I look forward to that time. It would be a great Christmas present to find new Cousins. Locating and communicating with new Cousins is very exciting and something in which I take great pleasur. Take care Bev Powell [email protected] Strathroy Ontario Canada

    2. Big Hugs and Hi Bev.... Welcome to our wonderful world of Powells! Jim does a great job of keeping our page updated, and alerts us when he does, as the DNA results come in to him. We don't thank him for all the hard work he does nearly often enough, so I'm using this space to shamelessly flame him with our sincere appreciation. The postings via the newsletter can be sparse or quite lively, depending what new facts or new matches any of us find. Good luck in your research, and again, welcome to the group.
