Barb, Thanks for the response! Boy is this stuff interesting and exciting! I taught science for 34 years and thought I understood genetics, but this DNA stuff is really something. I visited with a fellow "T" groupie of mine (April Powell) who is an almost perfect DNA match to me, and she is a direct descendant of Honorias Powell, the son of Thomas/Mary Place Powell. In checking the line you suggested, I see that the line goes: Thomas d1658 Wales to Thomas/Mary Place 1634, to Thomas Jr, to Richard, and then to Wiatt and so on. I suspect I am from this Richard, or his brother John/Elizabeth, but still have not proven anything yet. I don't understand how I can be a "T", related to April, etc and an exact match, and then be tied to these Wales people. In comparing my 37 markers to theirs, I only match 10 of the 37. Their haplogroup is way down the table from mine.... Can you shed any light on this?? The only thing I know for sure is my line runs upward from James Paxton (b 1838 NC) to his father John (b1808 NC). There the line gets really fuzzy. All my family thinks John (1808)'s father might have been a Ransom Powell, but nobody has any proof. I have spent 14 years trying to solve this mystery! I would dearly love to find out who my John's father was... If you, or anyone can help, please contact me. I did this DNA thing hoping to solve this riddle!! Hi Hannah- How are you? Do you realize that this is the DNA group I belong to? My kit is #29585; James Powell who married Rebecca Bynum is kit #63970; kit #41020 is my cousin who is descended from William H. Powell, son of my James 1787. I dont know if I have ever looked in Halifax Co before. Rachel Powell was living in 1850 next to a Josiah Murphy; I dont have anything on a Josiah Murphree, dont find that name in the Murphree database. Thanks for your help, with your pack on the trail now, maybe we can flush out these Powells. Rachael, Please contact me....I am kit 107720 in the "T" (first) group NC 19. I am trying to find where my John (b 1808 NC and moved to Ark and died about 1870) came from. I have lots of speculation (including a possible Ransom Powell as his father) but have no proof. I do believe I am descended from Thomas/Mary Place (1635). Have been in contact with many of our "T" group but nothing solid so far....Anyone else who might be of help, please also contact me. The Rachell Powell from Lowndes county, AL, is in Lauderdale MS in the 1860 census. She is living with her daughter Julia Powell Hurt and Julia's husband and children. Interestingly, Julia's first son is named "William H." This is signifant since apparently (according to information below) Julia's parents were William and Rachell Powell. Moreover, William and Rachel had a son named "William." If this is my great grandfather, he was also "William H. Powell." Hannah, This is very significant for me. Whatever you have on this William and Rachell I would really appreciate. BTW - I believe that MCRA means "most common recent ancestor." Thanks for the data on Allen in Lowndes. I have been working a long time to determine who Rachell married. My great grandfather was William Powell and his brother was John Clay Powell. Rachell had 2 sons very close in age to what my relatives would have been in 1850. Thanks for whatever you can provide on this. Robert and Barbara have done a fantastic outline KIT # 8205 NC #1 Daniel Powell born @ 1755 KIT # 44391 NC #1 John Powell Born @ 1760 Daniel and John are 2 BROTHERS who inherited about 1780. Daniel Powell stayed in Dobbs County, NC Nancy's and Rachael's direct line. John Powell migrated to Craven County, NC Our cousin Charles's direct line. Nancy lives in Archdale, NC Rachael lives in Kenbridge, Va. We were very pleased that we were able to receive a DNA from John's line to vertify that we were connected. I hope this explains about the 2 Kits. Rachael
Markers 13 - 37 have been added to kit 136640. Kit 134082, with markers 1 - 12 has been added. Kit 136808, with HVR1 & HVR2 has been added. Remember HVR1 & HVR2 are results of mtDNA test and are found using the mtDNA link after table 2. Thanks. Hi Hannah,We belong to the first green group on the Powell Project. We are trying to find the MCRA that ties us all together. We have been looking at this Allen Powell who was in Lowndes Co.,AL along with the family of Rachel Powell who's husband isalready deceased for the 1850 census. Having looked at the Halifax Co., NC census info for 1800 and seeing James, William, Jesse, and a Hampton all names reportedlytied to our various families I would really appreciate in any information you have on this line. Thank you,~Diane #22139
XXXXX----MISTAKE .... my last reply.... regarding ALLEN POWELL (1791-) of LOWNDES COUNTY....... The family was NOT from Wake County NC ........... they WERE from Halifax County North Carolina. hannah ----- Original Message ----- From: "powbak" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]>; <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, December 10, 2008 1:02 PM Subject: Re: [POWELL-DNA] Help! Powells in Lowndes County Alabama I did note that Josiah Murphy was living next door to Rachell. I have placed messages on different list-serves, hoping that a descendant of the Lowndes county Powells would emerge. Interestingly, I have a potential contact point with a descendant of a Sam Powell who was also living in Lowndes county. Another contemporaneous Powell was Allen Powell (VA 1791), died in Hayneville, AL in 1873, with several children (and 22 slaves). I don't know if it is more than what you already know ... They came from Wake County, North Carolina. ----- Original Message ----- From: "powbak" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]>; <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, December 10, 2008 1:02 PM Subject: Re: [POWELL-DNA] Help!
