    1. Life and times of Mary Powell, Philipson, Wynne
    2. If anyone can add to the following, please do so. The following is a discussion of the Life and times of Mary Powell, Philipson, Wynne, from documentation either researched by myself or forward to me by Mary Jean Zimmerman, or available on the web. To save space, I am referring to the book, "The Powell Families of Virginia and the South" as "the Lucas book", also referring to the book, "Powell: An Early York County Virginia Family" as the Hansford papers. This book is located at the York Co. Public Library Call # 929.2 Reference page 344 of the Lucas book: On page 344, footnote # 3, the Lucas book cites the will of Thomas Powell, dtd 28 Jul 1735, probated 21 May 1739. The will of this Thomas Powell cites wife as Mary. On page 344, footnote # 4, the Lucas book cites the will of another Thomas Powell, dtd 2 Apr 1749, probated 13 Jul 1749. The will of this Thomas Powell cites "dear mother Mary Phillipson". On page 14 of the Hansford papers, there is a discussion of Thomas Powell Jr. with will dtd 1749. Ms. Hansford cites that this Thomas was most probably a son of Thomas Powell with will dtd 1735, as does the Lucas book. Thomas Jr., cites his mother as Mary Phillipson. From the web page: _http://inman.surnameweb.org/documents/va-inman.htm_ (http://inman.surnameweb.org/documents/va-inman.htm) "Mary Powell, widow of Thomas Powell, and Robert Philipson were parties to a marriage contract dtd 5 Jul 1745, recorded 18 Nov 1745. He was a resident of Warwick Co. and she was of York." Robert Philipson died and left will proved 17 March 1746, and next Mary Powell Philipson married a Robert Wynne. Brunswick Co., VA., marriage record dtd 9 August 1753 between Robert Wynne and Mary Philipson. There is a Chancery suit between Moss vs Powell in the 1790 timeframe located in Brunswick Co. that Mary Jean Zimmerman has transcribed and if one reads this suit, the relationships of Mary Powell and Robert Philipson, and Robert Wynne is explained very well. This court action takes place over several years, and details many interrelated families. Greensville Co., VA was formed from Brunswick Co., VA 1780. In the records of Greensville Co., is found the will of Mary Powell, Philipson, Wynne as follows: Mary Wynne, Parish of Saint Andrews, Dec 5, 1786, Pro. Oct 23 1788, sons: Robert and John Powell; Grandson: William Powell, son of Edward Powell, deceased; Grand-daughter: Mary Lee, wife of James Lee; Grandson: Isaac Collier, son of Thomas Collier; Granddaughters: Tabitha Tuell Powell, daughter of Edward Powell, and Mary Powell, daughter of Robert Powell; EX: sons John and Robert Powell; wit: W. Mason Matt David, Lucy Wrenn. (will book # 1, p 120) Greensville Co., records contain much information about the Powell family cited in the Lucas book page 342 The Lucas book cites the information available in Greensville Co., but does not indicate a relationship between the Powells of York and the Powells of Greensville Co., VA. If one researches the paper trail, there is a direct line from York to Greensville Co., VA., or this is my belief. Thanks, and please add anything else available on Mary. I am a descendant of Edward Powell of Oglethorpe Co., GA and he was not the son of Thomas Powell as indicated on page 343 of the Powell book. Edward (son of Thomas with will dtd 1749) died and left will in Greensville Co., VA. Ann Corum
