    1. [POWELL] Parents of John and Edward Powell of Oglethorpe Co., GA., and Sussex Co., Va.
    2. Reference the following: "Powell Families of Virginia and the South" by Lucas, pages 342-360. On pages 342-360 of the Lucas book, there is a discussion of the family of Thomas Powell with York Co., VA., will dtd Jul 1735. There is a son named Edward and John listed and the assumption is made that these two sons were the Edward and John Powell of Oglethorpe Co. GA. I do not believe this assumptions is correct based on the following: There is a son Thomas Powell listed on page 344. The assumption in the Lucas book is that this is the son, Thomas Powell with York Co., VA., will dtd 2 Apr 1749, probated 12 Jul 1749. I have no research that cites anything different. In the York Co., VA., will of Thomas Powell, is a reference to his mother Mary Phillipson. York Co. Deed 5, 1741-1754, 309-310. (information supplied by Mary Jean Zimmerman), Edward Powell Apprentices of Virginia; Master: Benjamin Moss; beginning date 20 Nov 1749; Mother: Mary Philipson, Occupation Carpenter. This Edward, son of Mary Philipson would have been under age. My Edward Powell of Oglethorpe and Sussex Co., VA was a land owner in Surry Co., VA., by 1744, his first child Elizabeth born in 1746, and could not be the same Edward Powell with mother Mary Philison listed as an apprentice of Benjamin Moss in York Co., VA. Sussex Co., VA., was formed from Surry Co., VA. The following timeline is from the Inman web page: Mary Powell widow of Thomas Powell with York Co., Va., will dtd 1735, and Robert Philipson were parties to a marriage contract dtd 5 Jul 1745, recorded 18 Nov 1745. He was a resident of Warwick Co., VA., and she was a residence of York Co., VA. Robert Philipson's will was dtd 21 Jan 1745/46 and proved 17 Mar 1746. Mary Philipson, widow of Robert, married Robert Wynne of Surry Co., in Brunswick Co., VA 9 Aug 1753. Robert Wynne's will was proved in Sussex Co., on 12 Aug 1754. He names his wife Mary. Mary Powell Philipson Wynne, made her will 5 Dec 1786 and the will was proved in Greensville Co., VA on 23 Oct 1788. Mary had purchased land earlier in her life in Brunswick, Co., VA., and I believe this land was in the part of Brunswick which later became Greensville (I have not proved this point). Mary Powell Philipson Wynne's will: Parish of Saint Andrews, 5 Dec 1786, probated 23 Oct 1788. Sons: Robert Powell and John Powell; grandsons: William Powell, son of Edward Powell, deceased; granddaughter: Mary Lee, wife of James Lee; grandson: Isaac Collier, son of Thomas Collier: granddaughters: Tabitha Tuell Powell, daughter of Edward Powell, and Mary Powell, daughter of Robert Powell; EX: Sons John Powell and Robert Powell; Wit: W. Mason, Matt Davis, Lucy Wrenn. (Mary Powell daughter of Thomas {will dtd 1735} and Mary Powell married Thomas Collier. She was deceased by the date of her mother's will) Edward Powell s/o Thomas and Mary Powell was deceased by 1786. Edward Powell of Oglethorpe Co., GA., and Sussex Co., VA. was alive and well in 1786 living in Georgia. I also believe he is the same Edward Powell listed on the 1790 Sussex Co., Virginia census. His will was dtd 4 Nov 1795, and probated in GA. Surry Co., VA., deed dtd 21 Feb 1744; William Akeison and wife, Winifred Atkeison of Surry Co., to Edward Powell of James City Co. for 60 pounds current money, 300 acres (being the land said Atkeison lives on) bounded by Sowerwood Branch, John Stokes and the Spring Swamp. My Edward is listed of James City Co., VA. I have no records available in my locale to research the Powell family of James City Co., VA. Has anyone been able to place the John and Edward Powell of Oglethorpe Co., GA., and Sussex Co., VA to a family other than the one cited in the Lucas book? Does anyone have access to any James City Co., VA., records? Thanks Ann Corum
