You mention Tennessee born Powells and my ears perk up. My Rebecca Powell may have been born in Tennessee. Our family thought she was from Tennessee from word of mouth family history, but she is listed as being born in Indiana on her daughter, Emily Jane Manary (Redshaw)'s death certificate. But about that info on Emily Jane Manary (Redshaw)'s death certificate, it was provided by her son, James Franklin Redshaw, who didn't know how to read. He knew that his mother, Emily Jane Manary (Redshaw) was born in Indiana and may have assumed his grandmother, Rebecca Powell (Ellis) (Manary) (Atchison) was born there, too. I know when my great Aunt Ena wrote down the family tree for one of her grandchildren's school projects, she said Rebecca was born in Tennessee. I think the information about her being born in Indiana on some of the genealogy sites was started by my writing what I was seeing on her daughter's death certificate in the section where it asks her mother's name and! where she was born. I saw Indiana, and mentioned that on the message boards and the next thing I know, she is listed as being born in Indiana. I'm just not so sure of that. So, please keep my Rebecca Powell in your thoughts when you are researching Powell born in Tennessee. She was born in either 1806 or 1807. She married an Ellis first and after him, Jonas Manary. She had two children, a son Pakson Manary born 1840 in Illinois and a daughter Emily Jane Manary born Sept. 28, 1841 in Indiana. The name Pakson could be a clue. I have never heard that name before, so if there are Powells in Tennessee by that name, that could be a possible link. Also, she married a James Atchison, born 1792 in Virginia, after Jonas Manary's death. They lived in Iowa on the land she was awarded from his estate. James Atchison died in Mahaska County, Iowa and is buried there. I see no more info about Rebecca. I mention all of this incase the names or info rings a bell with fellow rese! archers. Keeping my fingers crossed. Linda Lyon
Hi Linda, Sorry to take so long to respond. If, I see anything more, I will let you know. I don't have any Manarys or Redshaws, so 'breath' until something changes. This thing with my Powells gets even worse! I have found him born in three places now! North Carolina being the latest. I need to locate the Census where I found that and include it in my notes! I thought that I already had done that, but apparently not. It is always the same wife and children, so I know it is him. Will let you know though.
