Mary Turkey that married Thomas Powell left a will in 1786. Do you have information conflicting this? I would like to hear from you soon. Thank you. Katie Katie: I descend from the Thomas Powell, surgeon of York County who married Elizabeth Digges. I have been researching these Powells for a long time so naturally when you mentioned a Thomas Powell from York, I was interested. My Thomas Powell's father was a Seymour Powell who died in James City Co. bef. 1767. The Thomas Powell of York with will of 1747 and all those York Powells are a much discussed lot. From what I have found, the Thomas Powell with a Mary Turkey was from Norfolk Co Powells. I would be most interested in Mary Powell's will, as I have not seen a will listed in York County for a Mary Powell. Can you give me the Book, Page no, and County reference? It is even more interesting in that Rev. Lucas' book on the Powells mentions that there is some confusion regarding the Thomas Powell of Norfolk Co, who appears to have died 1731-51 either in Norfolk Co or Elizabeth City Co. According to Lucas, this Thomas Powell married a Mary Turkey who was a daughter of Thomas and Eliz. Turkey. Is this the line that you are referring to , with a Mary Turkey Powell will of 1786? MJZ
This would be the will of Mary (Turkey, Powell, Phillipson, Wynne) She married many times. I am not sure if you have ever read the book: " Robert and Charity's Eleven and then some - A Powell Genealogy." by Durward E. Powell, Jr.? He turned all the notes over to me on Edwin Powell, as this is my has been doing major research as well throughout the years, and so happened to compile the info on my line during his research. He has me by a few years and I don't believe had much interest in following the branches beyond what he was searching. What he is involved in now is the names you and I are speaking about. He wrote me a letter and added in the names and research materials that he has obtained so far while tracing Robert Powell. I also have the Powell book by Lucas, and as Durward explains to me there is some controversy over where certain Powell's migrated to and that there are GA Powell's laying claim to certain ancestors too. I was not referring to the Will you spoke of, but would love to see that if you have a copy. I have 14 pages of information that he wrote to me and have to admit that I am very very new to all of this. I know Durward has put alot of effort and research into the Powell's and I do not want to let him down. :-) I do have in part of his notes where it states: "Thomas Powell, died ca 1739 married Mary Turkey, and they had ten children: Seymour Powell born at least as early as 1714. Witnessed deed in York Co. in 1735. He must have been 21 years of age at the time. John Powell born 1714-1728. Witnessed at least four deeds in Sussex Co. 1783-1790. Seee LWT of Mary Wynne, his mother, dated 1786 in Greensville Co. Edward Powell born ca 1728-1735 married Jane Tuell, died in Greensville co., VA, in 1785, had twoo children, William and Tabitha, see LWT of Mary Wynne. Hudson Powell born ca 1714. Recorded on 18 Nov. 1783. James Powell b 1714-35, died before 1786. No known children. Robert Powell born 1735-39, died ca 1791 in Greensville Co., Va. Married twice, first to Mary _____, and second to Sarah Malone in 1785. Had 8 children. William Powell born 1728-35 married Henrietta_______, died ca 1764. Had one child, Thomas. Thomas Powell, Jr. born 1714-1728, died 1749 in York Co., VA., naming his brothers and sister and mother Mary Phillipson (Wynne). Let me know what you think!
