Joan SMITHIER (c1608-1661) was probably born in London, England. Father's name was said to be John SMITHIER. Her first husband was ____POWELL . He must have died quite young because she married (abt 1628) John CUSTIS (1592-1684). CUSTIS was born in England but apparently spent most of his life in Rotterdam, Holland, where he operated a hotel/inn which was favored by Puritans who had fled England. At least 3 of their children went to America. The CUSTIS Family of Virginia is well known. Do any of you have a clue as to who Joan's (maybe, Jane) SMITHIER's first husband could be?
