I have a question about this book. I have it. My people were in NC in the 1850's but they are not listed in this book. They are Powell's. In my own records they have spellings Powel and Powell as last names. Why wouldnt my family be listed in here? Thanks! Katie Katie: Yes we were speaking of the Powell book you reference. In Lucas' Foreward of that book, he outlines what he did, was trying to do etc and somewhere near the end he mentions that his book is an "Encylopedia of the eight major Powell Familes of the Southern States". Needless to say, that was a subjective statement but he put together what he could find and must have missed a few. What are your families of Powel/Powells? Think all of us researching that Powell name have records with it spelled Powel as well...court clerks really just did their thing with the spelling of most any name. :>) There seem to be a long line from North Carolina in the book. Perhaps your Powell line originated from the North rather than from the Va /Maryland areas that he covered. Just a thought. MJZ

    3. Hi! Yes they were definitely all in the NC area in the 1850's. I have heard many tales of the Powel/Powells. I was also told a name that I havent seen Strickland Powell (I have to go into my notes) I dont have much on it, but said he always heard this name in our family. I know my names, but there isnt much of a record on them... ----- Original Message ----- From: EDZIMM@aol.com To: POWELL-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Saturday, February 26, 2005 9:38 AM Subject: Re: [POWELL] Philipson - Powell In a message dated 02/26/2005 9:03:37 AM Eastern Standard Time, kdpcabrio@comcast.net writes: Hi are you speaking of the book The Powell Families of VA and the south by Lucas?
