    3. The gentleman, John M. Powell is one of the southern Powells. A son of Ransom and Miriam Rowland Powell. John M. or J.M., born 1813, Rutherford County, NC. married 1842 in Washington County MS. Miss Cordelia Penrice. During the Civil War, the Powells resided in Pickaway County Ohio with their children, Ida Em, b. ca. 1845, Shelby County TN., Richard L. b, 1849, Shelby Co. Tn. a daughter Susan Powell b. 1854, and John M. Powell JR. b. 1854 Coahoma County, MS. Coahoma Co. Ms. is the families home in 1860 census. A son Augustus Powell, b. 1843, against his father's wishes, served in the Confederacy and died Sept. 16, 1865 at Alton, Ill. prison camp. His body was claimed by family friends in Pickaway County and is buried in an unmarked grave in the Fickardt family plot in Forest Cemetery, Circleville, Ohio. J.M. Powell, according to "The Lewis Family History," was in Coahoma County in 1866. He returned to his home in MS. to find his home in ruins and the plantation destroyed. To date, I have only located John M. Powell Jr. in Coahoma MS. He had married Ella M. Smith in 1876. This query may be a little long, I am hoping someone is familiar with this family and can tell me what happened to the family upon the return to MS. I would like any descendants to know where Augustus Powell's final resting place is. Thank you for any information you may be able to provide. Kindest regards, Mary A.
