Hi, Cousin Melinda! I'm still doing research on the Rowland POWELL line. I'm just dabbling along and haven't come up with anything earthshaking. The closest thing I have found was my grandfather Calvin Russell POWELL b. 1872 Oregon was married in the 1910 census to a Carrie F. (maiden name unknown) b. abt 1872 (she says she was 38 in the 1910 Census) who had been probably previously married to an EDWARDS, (his first name is unknown). The assumption is based on the fact that in the 1910 census there was a stepson in the same house by the name of Frank J. EDWARDS. It's made for a fascinating search but I have still not found anything else about her. At this time in my life I don't have time to go to the Oregon State Archives to do a search and since I prefer to do my own research (that's what's fun about this!) it will probably be some time before I solve this puzzle. I too, enjoy reading all of the other POWELL research that is going on. It helps me to learn about new ways of finding information. Hi Ray, It's good to hear from you again. We met when we responded to a posting about a Calvin Powell totally unrelated to our Calvin Powell, descendant of Rowland. I had been at a dead end and your information put me back on the trail again. I have found out a few more things since we last corresponded. I'll list them in case you or anyone else is interested. (You may already know this information, but just in case...) Our first common ancestor - the above listed Calvin Powell and his wife, Clarissa Richardson, traveled to Oregon by wagon train from Stark County, Illinois, in 1853. They arrived in Linn Co., Oregon on 5 Sep 1853. They had settled in Stark County, IL, in 1837. In 1839 Calvin ran for election as County commissioner on the Whig ticket. He only received 10 votes (I assume his family voted for him!). He was on the first petit jury in the county. I have obtained a birth record for this Calvin from Strafford VT listing his parents as Calvin and Speedy Powell (which we already knew). Calvin, husband of Speedy, served in the Revolutionary War, as did his father Rowland. According to the book "Births, Baptisms, Marriages and Deaths from the Records of the Town and Churches in Mansfield, Connecticut 1703-1850" Speedy Davis was born on Dec 1, 1771. Speedy's father was Isaac Davis. I believe he also served in the war as there is an Isaac Davis from Mansfield listed in the"Record of Service of Connecticut Men in the War of the Revolution..." Rowland Powell and his wife Mary Ann Richardson are buried in the Savage-Delano Cemetery in Hartford, VT. Rowland is listed as one of the original proprietors of Hartford.
