Mahala is a Hebrew name that became somewhat popular in the early 1800s. In most cases there's probably no other connection, but, of course, a child may be named for a close relative who was previously named Mahala for whatever reason. Lots of Old Testament and/or Hebrew names were used in America during the1800s and there's been a revival of this practice in the last few decades. Sometimes it seems like the more remote the reference, the better.
