Though I can't see any reason to doubt it, I haven't found either scenerio to be stronger than the other. You are saying that John Jr - son of John Powell & Ann Havard - was the one who married Margaret Walton and had Malachi, Nancy and "several other children"? And it WASN'T John Powell, son of William and Elizabeth Kelley? That would make Ann Havard John's (who married Walton) mother, not his aunt, and William the uncle not the father, as I have disputed otherwise in the above previous message. Regarding William Jr and Eliz Kelley having no children, can you verify that or are you basing your statement on lack of evidence that they DID have children? I already knew that Malachi's father was John. It's who John's father was is what seems to be disputed here.
