Should it be of interest I have a newspaper clipping (I don't know which paper) that reads: "Rev. Ralph Austin Powell, Dominican Priest. The Rev. Ralph Austin Powell, 86, a native Washingtonian, Roman Catholic priest and member of the Dominican Order, died of leukemia at a Dominican facility in Chicago. The Rev. Powell graduated from Georgetown Preparatory School and Georgetown University. He received a doctorate in philosophy from the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium. He joined the Dominican Order in 1944 and was ordained in 1951. Early in his career, he taught philosophy at Georgetown University. Later, he taught and studied at various institutions, including the University of St. Michael's College in Toronto and the Dominican mother house in Rome. Survivors include three brothers, John Eris Powell and Jerome Powell, both of Chevy Chase, and F. DeSales Powell of Newton, Mass." If I am correct, MaryLou Sherwood may be the daughter of! W.T. Martin (my father's brother). There was an interesting religious divergence (?) between the Powell branch in the Washington area and the Martins of Maryland. The Martins were perhaps universally fundamentalist Protestants and rural while the Powells seemed to be Catholic and "big city" folks. If I recall the history correctly, Eris owned the Willard Hotel which is quite grand today (I was there some years ago) and of course is famous for the fact that Abraham Lincoln stayed there when he went to Washington, D.C. for his inauguration. He should have stayed there rather than going to the theater. Several years ago I spent some time doing a workup of all of these people. If it would be of interest I could send it to you--either in printed from which I could mail to you or perhaps in digital form. I used the Mormon program and would have to figure out how to export the file (Gedcom?). If you want it tell me what sort of computer file you can use and your e-mail ad! dress and I'll send it to you. Ed Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
