Author: tracer4236 Surnames: Powel, Powell Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.powell/7065.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi, I live in CA. Tried calling but you must have been out. Sampson Powel was in Pickens Co., SC with Allen Sr.1787-1878 and Josias/Josiah Powell 1786-1860. All three end up migrating to Gordon Co.,GA. Allen Sr.and family is the first to arrive in the area being in Cass Co., GA for the 1840 census. Sampson and Josias were still in Pickens Co., SC but by 1850 Josias/Josiah and family had also migrated to Gordon Co., GA. Now in 1878 Allen Sr. who was living next to Cyrus Powell and in 1870 dies. In 1880 Sampson and family have finally made it to Gordon Co., GA and are living next Cyrus. Oh in 1870 the census taker mistakenly lists Cyrus as Josiah 1820 but Josiah had died in Nov.1863 and the wife and family are those of Cyrus. The census taker must have gotten confused. 1. [POWELL] Florence Canton married a Powell. She was born about 1865 Indiana?
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: aeriehollow119 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.powell/7119/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Helena Florence Canton was born May 17, 1885 in Evansville, Indiana. She was "adopted" by William Henry Sterrett who turns out to be her real father and his wife Mary Elizabeth Grismer in 1894. The record is wrong as it lists her birth year as 1894. Census records have the correct year listed for 1900. The record of "birth/adoption" lists her mother as Florence Powell. Unfortunately Vanderburgh County Indiana has "lost" some records in a move to a new courthouse over the last 15 years... but the library had a transcribed record with the information stated here. I'm assuming that Florence's birth name was Canton and that at the time of the adoption she was married to a Powell. William Sterrett bought property in Evansville Indiana and owned it from 1894-1907. He and Mary Grismer married July 5th, 1894. The adoption took place before school was to start. Grandma said that they took her to the World's fair in Chicago and then to their new home. Anyone who connects or knows more of this story, would appreciate knowing more about her mother Florence Canton Powell. I had the autosomal DNA testing done to find this info out and confirm the family's suspicions - grandmother thought this was also true - too bad she passed before I could let her know. They are the the professionals in DNA genealogy and Ancestry is much behind them. Having said that, if you have the free DNA offer from Ancestry, it is worth submitting that too. I have submitted DNA to Ancestry as well. You will find FamilyTree gives much better and more usable results. To answer your question, DNA results should open many new doors for you, whether they lead to my line or another. You will be amazed at how helpful it is. Contact Jim Barrett if you want to pursue testing with FamilyTree. Good luck.
