Some miscellaneous from the book. It occurs to me to wonder where the Rev. John Powell's actual research is today. A direct descendant of his might check around. Since he was prominent and lived in Findlay, that library may have it. Just a thought. It appears from the book that five Powell brothers arrived from Wales in 1685. Unfortunately, I didn't find where the Rev. John Powell (author) states their names. Here are some sentences. "In looking to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, in the year 1769, you will see two persons standing at the hymeneal altar, with good warm hearts filled with real honest love and affection for each other. (I'm assuming Philip and wife, Julia Ann Miller)." ... [from Lancaster to] "Reading, Berks Co., PA ..." [then to] "Mifflin Co., PA." ... "The inmates of that happy home increased in number until it became apparent that the 'parent hive' was too small to contain them all; and the young 'swarms' began to start out in different directions." (obviously, their children) ..."Two went to Schuylkill Co., PA ...; two went to Fairfield Co., OH; one went to Hardy Co., VA; three settled in Mifflin Co. PA ....; one flew to Perry Co., OH, while another stopped in Stark Co., OH; three continued to fly as though the wind was I their wings, and few to Hancock Co., OH." (Powell, Preface xvi, xvii) "The five brothers who came from Wales in 1685 stopped in New Jersey, and there separated. Richard remained in New Jersey, William went to Pennsylvania, one went to Virginia, one to Rhode Island, and (another?) one to Virginia." (Powell, 126) Another line from a letter received by Rev. Powell from (the) Hon. Judge Thomas Powell of Delaware, OH (but not directly related to this particular line of Powells, as you will see). "[the surname] originated in Wales, and, it is said, was originally Ap. Howell, but was condensed by writing it Powell. It was known in Wales and England as early at least as the reign of King Henry VIII, A.D. 1509. They were among the first settlers of America, and especially of Virginia, Pennsylvania, and the New England states, going back in date perhaps two hundred years. ... My father was a native of Breconshire; and I was born in Glamorganshire, the next county south of it." (136) The book is an outgrowth of a reunion held August 15, 1878, on the camp-meeting ground on the land of Philip Powell, of Union Township, Hancock Co., OH. It was extremely well organized. The first informal meeting was held Jan 28, 1878 in Findlay, to discuss the "propriety of the Powell families to hold a reunion." It was decided that: 1) a larger meeting would be called Mar 23 1878 to organize a Powell Reunion Association. 2) Rev. John Powell be elected president for the purpose of taking charge of the interests 3) the president give public notice thorugh the Findlay Jeffersonian and the courier, two county papers 4) the president prepare a programme for the reunion At the meeting Mar 23 1878, five branches of the Powell parenttree were represented; Peter Powell, John Philip Powell, Daiel Powell, John Corkle, and Charles Phillips. It was decided that: 1) will organize a reunion assoc. to be known as the Powell Reunion Association. 2) elect the following officers; One president, one general vice-president, five vice-presidents (one from each branch represented), one secretary, one treasurer, and five managers. election results: Rev. John Powell, president; Andrew Powell, vice-pres at large; Oliver Powell (Peter Powell branch), Rev. Perry Foltz (John Philip Powell branch), Benjamin Powell (Daniel Powell branch), Lewis Brown (John Corkle branch), Eli Phillips (Charles Phillips branch) vice-presidents; John W. Powell, secretary; George W. Powell, treasurer; Bateman B. Powell, William a. Powell, George W. Powell, Peter H. Powell, and Isaiah Powell, Executive Committee 3) The reunion date is set Aug 15 1878 4) The programme prepared by the president will be adopted 5) Rev. John Powell will collect statistics and historical facts, and write and publish an authentic genealogical memorial history of Philip Powell, late of Mifflin Co., PA, and his descendants. The reunion must have been almost unbelievable to the citizenry of the time. to wit. "It was said by many that the reunion was a grand success." First, it was a grand success in numbers. There were about FOUR HUNDRED and FIFTY of the Powell families present; and including neighbors and invited guests, about TWO THOUSAND persons were present." Second, it was a grand success in respectability. There were present some of the most respectable people in the county; and they enjoyed the occasion with great pleasure." Third, it was a grand success for the good order that was observed by the large crowd that had collected together during the entire day. The best of order and decorum was met everywhere during the day, and the best attention was given to all the exercises." (33, 34) Kind Regards, Joyce

Powell states on p 184 that John (Susannah and Polly) "died in infancy." However, chapter XI offers information on David Corkle, "son of John Corkle." Chapter X is devoted to Rev. John Powell's family. It took a long time to realize this because of his writing style. In the beginning, he indicates who was elected to the various offices of the reunion; he was elected president. Chapter X's Visit to the President - His Home- Wife - Children, etc. He writes this chapter as a conversation between his grandfather, Philip Powell and "Wesley." I don't know who Wesley is; perhaps he's identified in chapter III which is written in the same fashion to explain Philip Powell's travels. Rev. John Powell b. 2 Apr 1819 Pleasant Township, Fairfield Co., OH; ordained 11 May 1838 from Scioto Annual Conference of the United Brethren Church. m. 14 Feb 1843 Elizabeth Trapp b. 3 Apr 1822 Fayette Co., PA dau/of Andrew Trapp and Elizabeth Barkley. Harpst John Lawrence b. 1 Jan 1861 Levi Madison b. 5 Sep 1863; d. 20 Mar 1870, aged 6 years 6 months 15 days. I am so impressed by this next passage that I simply must include it. Concerning Levi's death... "Being the youngest of the family, he was the special favorite of all. When his father came home for his district (preaching), Levi would always meet him at a distance, and lead him home by the hand, and tell him all that had happened during the absence. But once when his father came home eh could not see Levi, and wondered why he did not meet him as usual. Upon opening the door he found him lying on the bed, sick. Levi said, 'Father, you must not think hard of me for not coming to meet you. I am sick.' The next day his mother said to him, 'Levi, I fear you will die.' He answered, 'I know I will die.' Wishing to know more of his mind, she said, 'If you die, we will have to bury you. See how cold it will be for you in the.' He calmly answered, 'Why, mother, how you talk! I will not be in the grave. You will only bury my body. I will have wings, and will fly all over heaven.' The next day he called his sister, Sarah, to his bed, and asked her if she did not se those two beautiful children dressed in white, sitting on his bed. He also asked his father to look, saying that they were the prettiest children he ever saw. Probably they were two little angels who had come for him, as he soon left, and was no more." There are more people who are the subject of this book. However, I have given all of the pertinent information on Philip Powell and his children and some of their children. In a separate email, I'll type the names of those who are listed in the front of the book. Kind Regards, Joyce
Thanks to A.T. Powell, I have found information on the beginnings of my Thomas Powell (abt 1752-1797) Surgeon in the revolutionary war. I offer this bit of information for others who might still be searching for their ancestors and who may need to stop a minute and renew your methods. A.T. Powell recently tried to tell me where to search for his Powell family and since I have always used Google I thought that was what he was trying to tell me. After retrying searches in rootsweb etc, I finally figured out it was the search engine box on my AOL tool bar. I used that years and years ago but never do it now. Wrong and stupid of me....because not only did I find the information regarding A.T.'s family, I also found information on my Thomas Powell, by using that simple search engine. So to all who have not recently tried that (hopefully I am not the only one) do try putting your questions, lost ancestor's name etc in that search engine on your tool bar. Mine is enhanced by google, but frankly I have been less successful using just the google search in my brower and often spent so much time refining my search, finally gave up. I merely typed in Thomas Powell and the results screen provided me with some new information not found by other methods. Such as this Colonial Williamsburg Foundation Library Research Report Series - 1399 - complete with sources! The site I found that helped explain my family is: <A HREF="http://www.pastportal.com/Archive/Research%20Reports/Html/RR1399.htm">http://www.pastportal.com/Archive/Research%20Reports/Html/RR1399.htm</A> This Thomas Powell was a surgeon in the Rev War and his family received a land warrants from Va. In the records of those warrants found at the LVA, are depositions that support his service as well as multiple requests by the heirs along with support for their being the heirs. Thomas Powell married Elizabeth Diggs in York Co in 1772, then according to the depositions: enlisted as a surgeon about 1776 in Yorktown; was in Williamsburg - his "native place" and removed to Fredericksburg to the end of the war. Other records of deeds etc in Spotsylvania Co and he died there in 1797. I have been searching for some documents that would identify his father etc. and "The Powell Books" have never seemed to get it correct. The site I am listing above has sent me on my way. So special thanks again to A.T. Powell and hope this in some way helps our "list Powells" find something new for them as well. Mary Jean Zimmerman

Dear Powell List, I believe that the subject Rev. John B. Powell, his father George P. Powell, and his father, Eilas Powell are not direct members of the Philip Powell family, the subject of the book material I've been writing about. Can anyone help out Charles with a connection? (see below) It is possible that Eilas (Elias?) is the same generation as Philip Powell, since Philip's eldest child, was born c1770 and Elias' son, George P. was born 26 Feb 1787. Keep in mind that there were five brothers who arrived in New Jersey from Wales in 1685. There are two interesting similarities between the families -one is a minister; the other is the given names ie. George and John, both prominent given names in Philip Powell's line. Could be realitively close cousins. The Rev. John Powell (the author of the book) does not write about any brothers his father may have had. Dear Powell List, As I plan to visit the Clayton Library for Genealogical Research this Thursday, it is my intention to take Rev. Powell's book and donate it there. To the disappointment of a few who have offered to purchase the book from me, I have, with prayer, decided to donate it for as many as possible to have it available to them. Thank you for the offers. I want to offer as much information from the book as my time allows. Note that Rev. Powell indicated that Philip married Julia Ann Miller "probably in 1769" (Lancaster Co., PA) and she was a [German lady] "who had lately come from Germany." (Powell 140,141) Chapter VII begins a discourse on the second generation of Philip Powell and Julia Ann Miller. (I hope my abbreviations do not cause confusion.) John Powell I have but little history; I did not find any of this branch, do not now know where any one of this numerous family resides. He was the oldest son, b. c1770 in Berks Co., PA; married to a dau. of Henry Alspaugh of Schuylkill Co., PA. She was a sister to Peter Powell's wife. Dear Joyce, Did any of those Powells in the book you bought end up in SE Kentucky? I thank you in advance for your answer. Diane
Arlean, You are most welcome. I began reading the book last night; it's a wonderful family. My husband's Zachman/Beckman/Anselment family was close by in Marion County, OH. Surnames which married into these three families were Almendinger, Bird, Bower, Britsch, Bucher, Burbach, Irmer, Hecker, Krause, Kyle, Pontius, Souter, Weist, Zook/Zuck (and others, no doubt, I have not yet found). I'm always looking in locations nearby for connections. Our Pontius and your Powell families may have known each other because he, too, was a Brethren (German) minister. Also, the Zachmans planted Brethren churches in that area, as well. Interesting, no? I know of the book and it has a lot of information in it. There is a copy of the book at the DAR Library in Washington, DC. Many of the descendants of Philip Powell ended up in Fairfield Co., Ohio. My ancestor was Philip Powell's oldest son John. He was not known as John Powell, however. He raised his family in Schuylkill Co., PA and was known as Johannes Paul. Philip and his wife lived in Berks County, Pa between 1769 and 1795 and the records of the church in the area record Philip's name as Philip Paul. Philip Powell was also a private in the Continental Army, Berks Co., PA listed as Philip Paul. It took me years to crack that wall but once I had it figured out the book you have was a treasure chest. Thank you for helping to preserve our history.
