    1. [POWELL] Philip POWELL Descendants - Thanks, Joyce!
    2. Jane Bensinger
    3. Joyce - Sorry to be just getting around to saying this, but thanks so much for all your hard work in presenting the information from the Philip POWELL book! That was very generous of you to type/share all of that. I also own a copy of this book and am fascinated by it, especially given the time it was written. A note of interest. I believe I descend from the first son of Philip and Julia Ann (MILLER) POWELL, John, who the author 'had but little history'. I believe it is because John, who married Regina ALSPACH, of German descent with whom he lived in PA German communities, came to be known in many records as Johannes PAUL. PAUL pronounced in German sounds almost identical to POWELL. Another of Philip and Julia Ann's kids, Peter, married another ALSPACH sister -- their name seems to have stayed static at POWELL to the best of my limited knowledge. Even Philip POWELL himself is recorded variously as Philp PAUL. He was apparently a Pennsylvania Rev. War vet, at least all the names match up in both the Philip PAUL and Philip POWELL families. I have not researched this to the extent I need to to prove it one way or the other, but certainly there are too many similarities for it to be just an odd coincidence. I know that there are others out there from this line that also think this to be true -- has anyone out there proved it? My PAUL line stayed in Schuylkill Co. PA until my father's generation and is as follows: Johannes PAUL/Regina ALSPACH > Daniel PAUL/Catherine YEAGER > John PAUL/Marietta LEIBY > Ella Savannah PAUL/James Beneville BENSINGER > James Paul BENSINGER/Eva LAUER > James Lauer BENSINGER/Patricia UNSWORTH > me, Jane Jane Bensinger chieffoo@comcast.net RESEARCHING: ALSPACH, BAUSCHER/BOUCHER, BENSINGER, BOYER/BEYER, BREINIG, FREY, HAAS, HEPLER, LAUER, LEIBY, MATTERN, MILLER, OHLINGER, PAUL/POWELL, REIFSCHNEIDER, SCHAEFFER, STEIN, STRASSER, TREXLER, WAGNER, WEINMAN/WEYMAN, WOOLESS, YEAGER/JAEGER

    3. Stephen, Have you checked the Social Security death index? If not you might want to give it a try. Use the advanced search using as much information as you know. Try with and without the "T". Do you know when Arthur was born? Do you know the name of the brother? If they were alive in 1930 you could search the census index, it would help to have an idea where they might have been living. If you don't have access to an online census index send me a private message including as much information as possible. I'll try to help. The more information you can provide the better the chance of getting a match. 3. Hello Joyce, I find the information that you have been posting fascinating. I am interested in a quote as follows " "[the surname] originated in Wales, and, it is said, was originally Ap. Howell, but was condensed by writing it Powell. It was known in Wales and England as early at least as the reign of King Henry VIII, A.D. 1509. They were among the first settlers of America, and especially of Virginia, Pennsylvania, and the New England states, going back in date perhaps two hundred years. ... My father was a native of Breconshire; and I was born in Glamorganshire, the next county south of it." (136) My mothers was a Powell and her father and grandfather were born in Breconshire, now I realise that Powell is a common Breconshire name, but I am wondering if your book contains any more information relating to Breconshire. Kind Regards, Ian Moseley, Hay-on-Wye, Breconshire, Wales, UK.

    3. Dear P. Jacobs, For further explanation, check out all of the other posts I've made the past several days. At the organizing meeting held in the Grange Hall, in the city of Findlay, Ohio on March 23 1878, on motion it was: "Resolved 3. That we will have a great, grand reunion of the descendants of Philip Powell, Of Pennsylvania; that the said reunion be held August 15, 1878, on the camp-meeting ground on the land of Philip Powell, of Union Township, Hancock County, Ohio." (near enough to Findlay that the newspapers of that city reported on it.
