You can find reference to the prison record in a book that has a title similar to this: "The Black Book of Georgia." I don't recall the exact title of the book but have seen the book at local libraries. Sorry, can't be of more help. Birdcro

(rumor is that Jane was young, 15 or 16 when she married.) I believe that Jane was born in KY ca 1855-1860 but haven't been able to find her there. I do not have Jane's mother's name or siblings. I've just started tracing Jane so any information would be greatly appreciated. Ken

    3. Hi Daryl I descend from two distinctly separate Powell families. One of which settled in London Twp Middlesex Co. and the other in Eastern Ontario. Several of my ancestors moved to Nissouri and Zora townships which straddle the Middlesex/Oxford County line. One never really knows who and where some people ended up. Thats what makes this hobby so interesting. I have several "Mary Jane" and a couple of "Jane" ancestors; none of which match your information. You may want to contact the Oxford County Library in Woodstock. Oxford County Library E-mail Address(es): rosemary@ocl.net I'm not sure how current the above address is as I've not used it for some time. If you contact them ask if the Woodstock Branch of the Ontario Genealogy Society has an email address. They are physically located next to each other in Woodstock. 2. Ellen L Martin
    3. Joan SMITHIER (c1608-1661) was probably born in London, England. Father's name was said to be John SMITHIER. Her first husband was ____POWELL . He must have died quite young because she married (abt 1628) John CUSTIS (1592-1684). CUSTIS was born in England but apparently spent most of his life in Rotterdam, Holland, where he operated a hotel/inn which was favored by Puritans who had fled England. At least 3 of their children went to America. The CUSTIS Family of Virginia is well known. Do any of you have a clue as to who Joan's (maybe, Jane) SMITHIER's first husband could be?

    1. [POWELL] Powell/Dunn connection, VA records
    2. I have a copy of the following deed: John Dunn of Frankling Co., NC to his nephew Seymour Powell and his wife Betty of Sussex Co., VA., dtd 14 Mar 1782. Deed of Gift Wit: Edward Powell Jr. Powell records show Seymour Powell married to an Elizabeth Drury. This fits the name of Betty. I have a Seymour Powell as brother to Edward Powell Jr., and their parents are listed as Edward Powell Sr. and wife Mary, in the Powell book. This is the Edward Powell died before 1798 in Oglethorpe Co., GA. I also show that Drury Dunn married 2 Nov 1782 Martha Powell, in Sussex Co., VA., sister to Seymour and Edward Powell Jr. In the genforum records, there is a John Dunn of NC which had a son named Drury. My question: If John Dunn is Uncle to Seymour Powell, this would make John Dunn brother to mother of Seymour, which is stated as Mary Powell? or in the old records could John had cited himself as Uncle to Seymour as Seymour's sister had married the son of John Dunn, and the importance was on the male of the family? Does anyone know the maiden name of Seymour and Edward Powell Jr.'s, mother? Thanks Ann Corum
