I have a Elisha Smith Powell, born in NC in 1793, married Rosse Murry (b. Buncombe County NC) in 1817 in Lincoln County, Tn, they moved to Purdy, McNairy County, Tn, sometime in 1820's and were there until early 1840s when they moved to Texas. Elisha and Rosse's children were James F. Powell (b. 12/14/1819), Elizabeth A. (b. 1/6/1821) who married George Lee Davidson Smallwood and moved to Miss, and three children who came to Texas with Elisha (Rosse died in 1839 in McNairy County): Martha Jane (who married William S. McAda in Texas), Susan Adaline (who married E.C. Davis, then John Stockman, then Daniel Daugtherity, all in Texas) and Samuel Elisha Powell. Hannah, Thank you for the Lewis Powell & Patience Watson genealogy. What a nice Christmas gift! The genealogy fairy has come at last. I've been sitting at this brick wall for so long. Yes Virginia, there is a genealogy fairy. Wishing all of you a Merry Christmas & Peaceful New Year Ruth Bowen Tx (Lewis W Powell & Sarah Killough)
Born in Georgia about 1827, married Mary J. ?? born in Tennessee. Died in Caldwell County, Kentucky about 1908. Does anyone know who Andrew's parent are and /or what Mary's maiden name is? Appreciate any help. Virginia in Seattle
I believe that after many years of searching and a whole lot of help from the people on this forum, I have ascertained a list of the children of Lewis Powell (1779-) & Patience Watson (1782-). Some of these children are certain and others are my best guess with the information I have. I am hoping that all the Alabama POWELL researchers can help me out here. If anyone has information on any of these families that may PROVE OR DISPROVE anything I have posted here, PLEASE reply. CAUTION: This list of children IS NOT contained in any records other than my own research and in the records of other researchers with whom I have shared my research notes. This list is certainly TENTATIVE at best except for William G. W. Powell & Edney Powell-Thrasher. I have reasons to believe that the others are his children but they are only assumed from certain evidence and they are not named anywhere as his children except by the clues in my research. I am saying this only because I don’t want anyone to ASSUME this this is a confirmed and irrefutable list of his children. We could find that any one of them belongs to someone else. OLIVER POWELL (c.1804GA-): Oliver lives near Patience Powell in Autauga County, Alabama and I have wondered if he might be a part of this family but I have not found any information on him or his parents. He might belong to this list but I just cannot find out anything about him. SPECIAL THANKS to JOHN POWELL of Colorado & Macon Georgia for the help he has provided. John at one time sent me a copy of the pension application for Lewis Powell and that document broke down a huge wall. It identifies Patience Powell of Autauga County as Lewis’ estranged wife. Then again he provided me with a record of a newspaper article "REWARD" for the apprehension of John Culp who murdered George Powell in DeSoto Parish, Louisiana. Once again a landmark discovery for me in identifying these children. BARRY WYATT identified the CULP children using the name "POWELL" in the 1850 Census for Patience Powell. This only goes to show that the HELP FROM EACH OTHER in these research is our most valuable resource for this wonderful search for our ancestors. There are many more of you out there but this posting just isn’t big enough for me to thank you all for your help. Hi Arthur, I'm not a researcher of the Richard POWELL (d. 1744) line. Two problems I have with what you posted are: 1. I have seen no evidence that Thomas POWELL, Sr. b. Bef 1629 is in any way related to William, son of Howell. I've seen a lot of speculation and supposition though. 2. I have seen no evidence that the wife of Thomas Jr. was a Gibson. I've seen her mother's name listed as Elizabeth Gibson, dau. of William Gibson. Unless she married another Gibson, or had Thomas out of wedlock, this would not be true. --Keith

Whitaker, Anderson, Mounford, Johnson,Waller, Prentis, Moss, Lamb ..etc I will send the abstracts of the deeds and of my notes on a later email but if you are trying to connect your Powells from VA to GA to NC to other parts, you should check out these Deed books. It also appears that at that time in Colonial Recordings the term Sr. and Jr. were applied as the older/elder and the second oldest and not necessarily related/ ie father and son. I will also be reviewing earlier deeds and have started the will books as well. What you read in printed sources should definitely be checked against the actual records....they do differ! In addition to those Deed Books and the Will Books I have also viewed the Hansford work on Edward Moss, who connects to a Seymour Powell thru the marriage of Lucy Moss, wife of Benjamin. Ms Hansford provides excellent sources and proof of her conclusions based on Court, Chancery and Deed records, however she even missed some of the information in those deed books. All of her sources can be checked, which is what I am in the process of doing. All of these referenced records from above can be found at the Family History Library near you via a microfilm loan or through the Library of Virginia. Chancery Records are a super source for family information, so don't over look those records as well ,unfortunately few have been filmed so you must pay for copies of them from the LVA. Another source of information for all or any of you regarding Virginia Powells is the Virginia Gazette newspapers which have been digitized by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. The Gazette covered most of the Virginia areas from early 1700s so do search for your Powells there. It is not just York County or the Williamsburg area...also includes NC and other parts of VA. The address is: http://www.pastportal.com/VA_Gazet/Html/P/Powell-Presson.htm There is an ad posted in the paper by a NICHOLAS POWELL, tailor who only recently came to the country from England. There are obits, marriages, lost slaves, horses, estate proceedings etc. etc. from all areas of Virginia and other states. If your work or genealogy is only via the Internet, the above site will give you some additional information, but if real answers are what you want...go for the original records. Mary Jean Zimmerman Mary Powell> Eugene Cole Powell > William Cole Powell > Cole Powell > Thomas Powell > Seymour Powell d. abt 1767 wife Lucy Moss Powell d. 1784. Seymour Powell was brother of Benjamin Powell 1727 - 1790. Seymour and Lucy Powell's children were Thomas Powell abt 1746-1797 ; John Powell; and Lucy Powell Roberts...to date.
I've seen many posts about Thomas POWELL, Sr., of Essex County, VA (d. 1701) on this list in years past. Has anyone found conclusive evidence that he was, or was not, the immigrant of this line? Does anyone have a transcription of his will? Also, I would be interested in corrseponding with anyone from this alleged line of descendancy: Thomas Sr. - Thomas Jr. - John, d. Bef. 1790 Amherst Co.

Hello all, Does anyone happen to know where Annie and George Kerby are buried in Jackson County, Kentucky? I have heard maybe in a clover bottom cemetery. If you have any info please email me. Annie was the daughter of Granville and Missouri Powell. She first married a Carpenter then George Kerby. Hope to hear from someone. Missy
The conversation regarding Lovely Abraham Powell is an accepted topic for conversation on this list. We have many members, some are very interested in this conversation, some of these are not posting to the list, just reading the messages. If you are not, then just use your delete button. This list is for the research of ANY Powell. We do not pick and choose what Powell we will visit about and for how long. Next month maybe we will have a on going conversation regarding Almon Powell of SC and I will be in ecstatic. Kathleen Burnett List Mom
