I have done DNA testing and am part of the Powell surname project. However, my closest relative is actually with a McWilliams or Hannah Surname. Someti me before Thomas Jefferson Powell 1804-1860 (Champ's father) there is an adoption or someother event causing the DNA results. Barnwell District/County, South Carolina has a full set of records beginning about 1800 when the county was formed. For a few years prior to 1800 the area was called Winton (sp?. I know this from years of researching my Tooles in that area. For a few years in the 1700's they were called districts, then changed to counties, then back to districts, and then after the Civil War,they are now called counties. What records any Powells left there will have to be determined by researching there. Be sure to check into the Barnwell message boards and e-mail list for Powells. It has not been very active lately. I don't remember if it is "gatewayed" to the message board. Some other counties in the area are and some are not. I forget which is which. I am on the Powell list because I have a William Powell married to an Amy(?)_?_ before c. 1715 when the death of a child was recorded in the St. Paul's Parish Vestry of Stafford County, Virginia. Not to be confused with St. Paul's Parish, Hanover County, Virginia. One of their surviving children, Amy Powell, married Anthony Buckner Thomas or just Anthony Buckner, about 1755. He died as Anthony Buckner in Halifax County, Virginia, with a will in 1780. Need parents for this William Powell. The Upper Three Runs area where the Tooles and other allied families lived in Barnwell County was taken into the Savannah River Atomic Energy Project in the early 1950's. My research of all my grandfathers: Hubert Powell 1912-1986, Iseral/Isrel Powell 1887-1952, Champion Powell 1841-1925, Thomas J. Powell 1804-1860. Thomas is my most distant relative that I can confirm. He lived in Rabun County Georgia from (my best knowledge) 1840 I think until he died. I don't have a lot on the Barnwell County Powells, but I am a descendant, also. John Powell's (b. 1789) father was Nathaniel Powell, b. abt. 1764, don't know who his wife was. In addition to John, he had a son William, b. abt. 1785 and died abt. 1815 in Barnwell County, SC. His wife was Elizabeth ___. Nathaniel also had another son and a daughter, according to the census. I suspect that your John's wife was Sarah McDonald/McDaniel, but I don't have positive proof of that. I come through William and Elizabeth's daughter, Isabella Powell who married Hiram McDonald (son of John McDonald). I am interested in the DNA project, but am female. Many members of his family were born and raised on the island and the surrounding area of Connemara. My grandfather, Michael John Powell, moved to Scotland and settled there. However, I believe many of his aunts, uncles & cousins moved to the USA (my family think New York & Pennsylvania and that the surnames Joyce & Halloran/Holloran pop up). His father, William Powell (my g.grandfather), apparently left/abandoned the family on Omey around 1921. The family folklore is that William settled & died around about Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I'm just looking for some information about the Powells and if anyone knows anything about William as the full story has eluded us so far!
