William Andrew Powell and Vianna Grahm are buried in the Buffalo Flats Cemetery in Nebraska. They pioneered that area of north central Nebraska and my grandmother was Bessie Powell Wilson. I will be visiting that site this summer. Are there any relatives living in that area at this time. Please respond. Bob McGuire
I can trace my line back to Elias jr. b. September 26, 1754 in Culpepper Va. Died May 25, 1832 In Lenoir, NC Burke/Caldwell Co. NC. After Elias my line has a little guess work, but don't they all. -----Original Message----- From: Agentphoenix@aol.com [mailto:Agentphoenix@aol.com] Sent: Monday, May 03, 2004 8:36 PM To: POWELL-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [POWELL] ASK & ANSWER QUESTIONS SOME ONE KNOWS Atpowelljr, What Powell line do you come from? Atpowelljr, What Powell line do you come from? Missy
Looking for info on John Powell, Sr. born supposedly in Chatham Co., NC or VA married to Mary Cromwell in about 1739. They had a son John Powell, Jr. who was married to Alice Brewer from SC. They had a son James Powell born September 9, 1759 in VA died in January 19, 1855 in Blount Co., AL. He married Rebecca Bynum about 1792 in Pendleton District, SC. She was born 1770 Orange Co., NC died February 4, 1851 in Blount Co., AL They are both buried at Mt. Moriah Cemetery in Blount Co., AL. Have alot of descendants from these unions. If anyone needs info on them I am glad to share. Jane Foley Cornelius, NC Formerly of Colorado Springs, CO Born DeQueen, AR
I have a GGGGGf John Powell, 1720, m. Mary O'Neal/O'Neil. He had a son John b. 1740. I also have a John Bowman Powell 1825-1882, and a John Clingman Powell 1853-1889. The first John is kind of a "not positive" therefore his father John 1695-1763, m. Ann Pickett is also without proof. But, that is what I got. -----Original Message----- From: Virginia A. He may be related, but AJ's son, John was also born in 1844 in Tennessee. They went from there to Caldwell County, Kentucky. Seems like all the folks in my line that went to Caldwell County became dead ends for their history! Maybe it was just a coincidence. My Powell's come from SC and NC. Most recently the Transylvania, NC area. The farthest back is Abraham Powell b. 1822 SC and d. 1893 NC. His parents may have been Joseph and Elizabeth. I can't seem to get past them, though. Abraham married Millie Ann Patterson, who moved to Wa state after Abraham's death. They also had a son named John Powell and many more children- Bonnie in Oregon
I have an Andrew Jackson Powell who was born about 1844 and who married a Mary Boutwell in MS, but they came from GA Sam Powell

My EAST COAST Powells favored the names of Rowland, and Calvin for a number male offspring. (NOTE: Rowland Powell l, b. abt. 1629, Wales, Great Britain; d. Connecticut; m. Isabella Buxton). The names of Rowland and Calvin were passed down through several generations in my Powell line. Those same names run in my Thomas Powell of Chester Co. PA. family. 1792-1873. John, Thomas, Samuel and Joseph. Then they threw in a Lewis and an Allen! Son Samuel had a son John who in turn had son and grandson John. I have tried to prove John and Catherine Powell as parents of Thomas Sr. No information so far. Mary A. Not only were they passed down through but they would occassionally skip a generation or two. My grandfather was named Calvin Russell Powell III and it was his grandfather that was named Calvin Powell II - his father's name was Russell Bartholomew Powell. Never have figured where that came from! Oh, well! Right now I'm stymied on finding out more info about my grandfather's first wife Carrie. According to the 1910 Census she was 38 years old, had a son from a previous marriage named Frank J. Edwards (at least he was my grandfather's stepson and lived in the same house with Carrie and Calvin Russell, so I am being brave and assuming that he was Carries son by a previous marriage). Carrie was born in OR with parents that were born in Germany and Switzerland and Frank J. Edwards was born in Oregon as well. Carrie claims to have had 6 children but only one was living with her in the 1910 Census. Were others grown and gone or did they die young? Carrie had been married to Calvin Russell for seven years at the time of the census. I know she's not my direct relative but I'm still interested in finding out more. While I'm at it, does anybody know what would of lured residents of Oregon down to the Alameda County, CA area during the 1855 to 1865 time frame? I have a number of relatives who went down there and then came back up to OR between those years. I am researching Edmond or Edmund POWELL from Alabama, wife unknown. He had a daughter, LUCINDA who married J.J. JACKSON and another daughter, NANCY who married James Dowling BOWMAN, 8 Jul 1849, in Escambia County, FL, Book B 81. James Dowling BOWMAN died 23 Dec 1858 and NANCY married John Charles GUNTER. James is buried at Pine Barren, Escambia County, Florida. NANCY is buried at the Ray's Chapel Cemetery at Bogia, Florida by her husband, John GUNTER. I would like information on Edmond POWELL as to his marriage, burial, etc. to prove that NANCY is his daughter.(Family says he was buried at the CRARY Memorial Cemetery, Escambia County, Florida in an unmarked grave) Perhaps he was buried in Alabama where more of his children were located. Please contact me if you are knowledgeable of this family or if you are a descendant. Thanks in advance, Jacqueline(BOWMAN)
The following information was copied from "1850 AGRICULTURAL CENSUS SCOTT COUNTY ARKANSAS" which is posted online at http://www.rootsweb.com/~arscott/ag1850.htm . Isaac Powell was my 3rd great grandfather, Wm. was his son and my 2nd great grandfather. Isaac Powell had 25 acres of improved land valued at $200.00 and $20.00 worth of farming implements. He also owned 3 horses, 4 milch cows, 4 working oxen, one other head of cattle and 40 swine valued at $204.00. His farm had produced 300 bushels of Indian corn, 100 bushels of oats, 33 lbs. of wool, 5 bushels of peas and beans, 10 bushels of Irish potatoes, 150 bushels of sweet potatoes, $12.00 worth of orchard produce and 200 lbs. of butter valued at $75.00. The value of his animals slaughtered was unreadable. Wm. G.W. Powell had 25 acres of improved land valued at $300.00 and farming tools worth $25.00. He owned 2 horses, 6 milch cows, 7 other cattle and 30 hogs valued at $227.00. His crops were 450 bushels of Indian corn, 370 lbs. of rice, 1 bale of cotton, $10.00 worth of orchard produce and 50 lbs. of butter worth $25.00. His buchered animals were valued at $25.00.
