Bubba- James R. Powell who was married to Elizabeth Lemons was the son of William H. Powell. William H. was a brother to my gr-gr grandfather, James Powell, jr. If that is the case, then we are certaily kin. Their parents were James Powell, sr and Mazdy Murphree Powell. James and Mazdy were both raised in Pendleton Co SC, James being born @1787 in NC. I have not found who his father was, probably one of the Powells in 1800 Pendleton. James Powell who married Rebecca Bynum was probably of some kin, an uncle? James and Mazdy were married in Pendleton in 1807, went shortly thereafter to Rhea Co, TN, then to Blount co AL in @1832-33(lived in area that became Cullman in 1877). James died in Blount in 1870, and may be buried in Roswell Creek Cem in unmarked grave. William H. also believed to be buried there. I do have a word document if any one is interested in my James Powell. I have a listing of William H.(married Nancy Jane Latham) children and their families(including James R.), but there are gaps that need to be filled in. My James Powell, sr had no son named John, but James Powell, jr had son, John L. My grandfather also named John. I would be happy to share in research on the Powells of Pendleton SC, Rhea TN, and Blount AL. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bubba" <dw01tx@yahoo.com> To: <POWELL-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, May 04, 2004 11:34 AM Subject: Re: [POWELL] John Powell, Sr., and Jr. > Is the son James R.? Hello Listers, I'm looking for parentage of a William POWELL b. ca 1770-80 in PA (according to War of 1812 enlistment info). He married Mary (Surname Unk) and they had at least 3 children: Levin b. 1807, Colvin b. 1809 and Mary Ann b. 1811. The children were all b. VA, probably Loudoun Co. William died of disease in 1813 in NY while in Federal Service (12th Inf Reg) during the War of 1812. Mary didn't appear to re-marry as she was still Mary Powell in 1818 when she apprenticed her 2 boys in Loudoun Co. By 1829 Colvin was in Belmont Co, OH where he married Eleanor BALL of MD. His brother Levin married Mahala WHALEY in 1830, also Belmont Co. In 1832 Mary Ann married George NICHOLS . . .again in Belmont Co, OH. Finding the parents of William POWELL has been a major brick wall and any help (or clues) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! Merna in California
Ray, My POWELLs only go back to a Joseph POWELL who was b about 1730, place unknown. He married Christen/ Christina FRY/FREY abt 1752/3, prob in Frederick Co, VA. (later, Hampshire Co and Hardy Co, now in WV). I strongly suspect that he was connected in some way to Samuel POWELL, one of the "English Moravians" who arrived in 1742, and were leaders of the community just south of Bethlehem, PA. Much has been written about these two POWELLs but I find nothing about Samuel's children. If my suspicions are correct, Joseph was most likely born in England -- near the Welsh border, or in London, prior to the families' departure for America. Moravian missionaries frequently stopped at Frey's Fort, so logically Joseph would have met his future wife living there. She also had Moravian relatives living south of Bethlehem. Whatever, I'm still looking for "proof positive" on Joseph. Remarkable thing is that he and his descendants continued to intermarry with families of Dutch descent for many generations. Hello Group, The name John runs in my Thomas Powell of Chester County, PA family, too. John Powell, b. 1665 in Cheshire County, England, was my 7th Great-grandfather. The latest John I have was born in 1741 to David Powell, b. 1718, and Elizabeth Chalfant, b. 1722. I recently came across information that suggests that this Thomas Powell, born abt. 1640, was born in Holt, Denbigh County, Wales, rather than Rudheath, Cheshire, England. According to this research, it's possible that there are Johns in my family dating back to 1539. ~ Marge in Ohio ~ Marge in Ohio
Aloha, I`m Edward J Powell of Waikoloa, HI...I had to add this: if I`m from as you refer to it a line: it is the one which will have the slowest, most disorganized and plain stupid morons in it! My still living and fully grumpy old man version of a father and his, my grandfather Richard and Roy Powell, both at MANY separate times in my youth pointed out OUR clans disturbing trait of ending up in the slowest line of any offered under any circumstance. most noticeably at a store check out but i learned while an employee of Uncle sam in the US Army in the early 70`s our CURSE applied to any line we had to be in! As my mother points out, who has watched this in humor and horror as NONE..not 1 of us POWELL males deals with it well, we live forever so we can bitch and moan longer than nay other group of FORTUNATE people on the planet. Could easily be why finding anything about my relatives , native Welsh speaking who moved here from Cardiff in the last 1800`s are simply impossible, at LEAST so far, to trace. No one wants to know us! I see I`ll have to travel to Wales to follow up all leads! Sorry but it`s been years waiting to escape! Greetings Powell Group: I am researching my Powell line which is replete with John's and I am hoping someone else is working on the ancesters of the family emigrant John Powell b. 1595. (my 13 GG) This John Powell was the first John Powell documented in America in Jamestowne arriving 1609 on the Swallowe. He survived the Indian massacres (in which two other early Powells, Nathaniel and William were killed.) He is listed with wife Katherine and son John on the VA muster of 1624/25 as living at that time. He was an ancient planter and probably died around 1636 leaving his wife Catherine and four sons (only one documented - another John.) I am working with a cousin on this line and we have hit nothing but brick walls on the ancestry of John b. ca 1595. Speculation has him related to Nathaniel and William of Jamestowne; related to Castle Madoc Powells; or son of a John Powell b. 1558 in St. Olave Parish, Southwarke, Surrey. We have found nothing to document any of these theories. If anyone has any documentation on his pedigree, please contact me. I hope someone knows. My father and grandfather were also John Powells. Hello List cousins, I am looking for the family of William POWELL b. abt 1778. He married 25 Dec 1798 in Halifax Co., Virginia, Nancy NELSON b. abt 1780 in Virginia (date and place from Census). William died 10 Feb 1847 in Van Buren Co., Iowa. I do not know where Nancy died but it was 18 Feb 1860 according to the family bible. I have proof of one son, Edward POWELL b. 1804 who married in 1826 a Sarah ---. This Edward was Executor to William's Estate. I also believe another son of William and Nancy may have been a Daniel N. POWELL who married a Rebecca. He was listed in the next County to Van Buren, Wapello, in 1850. I have all the children for Edward and Sarah, but am trying to locate the POWELL's in the Halifax, VA area. Any help, so much appreciated....this is one of my two blank walls after many, many years of the search. Thanks in advance for any clues! Best Wishes, Sandy sandy@mosquitonet.com

The California gold rush was in 1848 and I would have thought that it had tapered off by the time frame I mentioned. Alameda County is just south of Oakland CA, in fact, I haven't looked recently but it may include Oakland. I lived in Oakland in 1965-66 but I didn't pay much attention to county lines back then. ;-) Girls were far more interesting to a high school student. John G Powell ( circa 1760 Virginia) had a son named Hezekiah whose children came to Texas from McNairy county Tennessee and lived in and around Walker County, Texas. Hezekiah's brother William R. Powell was also in that area, and he had a son named Hezekiah who was born in 1850. My records don't show descendants of this younger Hezekiah, but I bet this is your family. We know that he was married in 1896, but cannot locate him on the 1900 or 1890 TX census rolls. If anyone out there has a clue for us, please let us know. Thanks for any help. Seems my guys were fond of Old Testament names, but we have our share of James, Joseph and Thomas mixed in with Abraham, Samuel, Elijiah etc. Ellen > = ==== POWELL Mailing List ==== NOTICE: Posting of virus warnings, test messages, chain letters, political announcements, current events, items for sale, personal messages, flames, etc. (in other words - spam) is NOT ALLOWED and will be grounds for removal.
