Hello All, I'm looking to find descendants of Irvin Powell who lived in Cooper Co. MO. He died in 1884 and is buried at Gooch Mills. He and his wife Elizabeth "Betty" Ross Powell had 6 living children. Most if not all these kids were raised by other families as both parents had passed. Anyone out there??? Here's a snipet I picked up along the line but never verified: Nathaniel POWELL md Lucretia ____ and they had a son John POWELL, c1644, prob in England or Wales. John md, c 1688, Mary COGHILL (b 1658- d 1689 Rappahannak Co, VA), and they had a son named Robert (1669-1740) who md Sarah TAYLOR (1676-aft 1745). Her parents were Col. James TAYLOR & Martha THOMPSON. Maybe these clues will help someone. Samuel T. Powell and Russell Bartholomew Powell were brothers and were in alameda County CA during the 1860 Census. They are both listed as stock raisers. They were in Linn County OR and homesteaded land there in 1853 or there abouts. Russell Bartholomew is my g grandfather. My grandfather was (depending on which record you are looking at) Russell Calvin Powell or Calvin Russell Powell. Samuel T. and Russell B. were sons of Calvin Powell II who was born in MA in 1792. I descend from Capt. Joshua POWELL who died 1781 in Halifax County, VA at the age of about 47. He was the son of Hezekiah POWELL and Bathia (maiden name unk.). Joshua had a brother named William who was born 26 Apr 1729 in Bristol Parish, VA. I think this brother was the William POWELL who also turned up in Halifax at about the same time as Joshua but I cannot prove that...too many Williams! Hezekiah was the son of John POWELL who married Michell/Nichell TURNER ca 1690. She was the sole heir of her father, Hezekiah TURNER who died in Rappahannock County, VA before 1677. Whether this John is related to the John of Jamestown is anybody's guess at this point. They also named a son William. I have a bit more on these folks if anyone is interested. Hello Powell's, I am looking for info on a Buren A. Powell and Nellie V. They are listed on the 1930 census in De Kalb County, Indiana with these children: Roger D., Richard B. & Robert L...Richard is my husbands grandfather..The only other info that I have is Richard's first marriage and those children and that Richard possibly died before 1991, and that Roger D. committed suicide...My mother-in-law would love to find out more about her father since her mother Mildred Hayes never spoke about him and when she did it was always bad, she would love to know of any other siblings out their and to get to know them since she never knew Richard or his family...Thanks so much, Allison
There's another interesting POWELL connection that goes way back in history: Joane POWELL (abt 1608 - 1661 Rotterdam, Holland). There's some difference of opinion as to whether her maiden name was POWELL -- she might have been a widow when she married (abt 1628/9, prob in Holland) John CUSTIS. Now, they just happen to be parents of The CUSTIS Family of Virginia. I gathered a lot of info on them before making the discovery that we are not related after all. Still, it's interesting that there were POWELLs in Rotterdam at that time. John CUSTIS operated a hotel which was favored by Puritans who had left England, some of them quite wealthy. John CUSTIS, of course, had come from England to Holland, and his children who came to America were Puritans. Guess I was forgetting about the "his and hers" POWELLs in our family. I wrote about hers who were in some way mixed up with Moravians in Pennsylvania, Virginia, Ohio etc. My husband has a Quaker line of POWELLs way back in Maryland: Walter POWELL (b abt 1622 in England) whose wife was Margaret BERRI/BERRY (b abt 1645, prob in VA) lived in Somerset Co, MD. His will was proved 4 Feb 1695. They had a son, John, b 27 Sep 1674, who was both a Sheriff and a Justice; he d 8 Jun 1718 in Northampton Co, VA. His wife was Sarah YEARLEY (abt 1675-19 Nov 1718 -- will pr Northampton Co, VA) They had 5 daughters, no sons. Now John had a brother William POWELL (1673-1715) who remained in Somerset Co, MD, md Elizabeth/Eliza LANE and they had a son John (b abt 1700) who md Elizabeth BRITTINGHAM. Their son, William (b abt 1703 - 1788), md Eleanor PEYTON and they apparently had two sons named John -- i.e. John Thomas POWELL (b abt 1745) and John Peyton POWELL (1760-1844), who had several wives, and a son named John Peyton POWELL. CAUTION: This is from a variety of "second hand" sources and should be thoroughly checked out by anyone who has reason to use the data.
