Most of the family moved to Alabama and then Arkansas. Regarding List Housekeeping - Please keep me subscribed as I am still looking for the parents of Walter POWELL, born bet 1620 - 1642 and died June 27, 1695, of Somerset County, Maryland. One researcher posted the names of his parents as Captain William POWELL, born about 1577 Southwarke Parish, Surry County, England, and his wife Elizabeth WELLS, born about 1577 Wales, England. I cannot find proof as of this time. My notes indicates three major branches of POWELLs in America; 1) John POWELL family of Old Rappahannock, Essex, Caroline, Orange, Culpeper Counties in Virginia and Orange and Burke Counties in North Carolina; 2) Robert POWELL family of Caroline, Culpeper and Orange Counties in Virginia, South Carolina, Alabama and Kentucky; and 3) Thomas POWELL of Essex, Caroline, Orange, Culpeper and Amherst Counties, Virginia. With this information, how did my Walter POWELL get to Somerset County, Maryland? Is he of any of these branches? The POWELLs are my husband's maternal line and the following direct descendancy was, in part, generously given me by a distant cousin: Walter POWELL (b. bet 1620-1642 - d. 6/27/1695) married Margaret BERRY (b. 1621 - d. 2/4/1694-95). They had: William POWELL (b. 6/12/1673 Somerset Co., MD - d. 1715) married Elizabeth LANE (b. 3/6/1681-82 - d. 1737). They had: William POWELL (b. 1713 Somerset Co., MD - d. bet 1787-1788 'Dumfries', Prince William Co., VA) married in 1735 to Eleanor PEYTON [d/o Col. Valentine PEYTON] (b. abt 1720 Prince William Co., VA - d. ?). They had: Colonel Levin POWELL (1737 Prince William Co., VA - d. 7/13/1810 Loudoun Co., VA) married on 2/6/1763 Sarah 'Sally' HARRISON [d/o Burr HARRISON and Mary Ann BARNES] (b. 1746 - d. ?). They had: Levin POWELL, Jr. (b. 8/4/1772 Loudoun Co., VA - d. 9/19/1807 Maysville, KY) married on 9/29/1797 Susanna Elizabeth 'Betsey' ORR d/o John ORR and Susan Monroe GRAYSON. They had: John Levin POWELL (b. 12/24/1804 Loudoun Co., VA - d. 8/11/1863 Maysville, KY) married on 10/15/1829 Maria Louisa GRADY (b. 4/20/1810 'The Shades' Loudoun Co., VA - d. 1/27/1891). They had: Sarah 'Sallie' Jane POWELL (b. 11/15/1839 Powelltown, Loudoun Co., VA - d. 3/2/1909 Washington DC) married on 4/23/1868 in Alexandria, Loudoun Co., VA Lyttleton WITHERS {s/o Pickett WITHERS and Emily WIGGINTON] (b. 7/27/1834 Culpeper Co., VA - d. 12/24/1894 Washington DC). They had: Powell Pickett WITHERS, Sr. (b. 10/23/1874 Alexandria, Loudoun Co., VA - d. 10/18/1925 Washington DC) married on 1/29/1902 in Washington DC Roberta DeShields. YATES [d/o Henry Clay YATES and Elizabeth DeSHIELDS] (b. 1874 Virginia - d. 12/1956 Silver Spring, Montgomery Co., MD). They had: Elizabeth 'Betty' Roberta WITHERS (b. 12/9/1902 Washington DC - d. 12/4/1980 Silver Spring, Montgomery Co., MD) married on 6/3/1925 in Washington DC to Claude Bryan CLAGETT [s/o Vivian Marbury CLAGETT and Sarah Anne BRYAN] (b. 5/6/1903 Prince Georges Co., MD - d. 3/14/1988 Silver Spring, Montgomery Co., MD). They had: David Marshall CLAGETT (b. 7/19/1941 Washington DC - Living) married 2) on 10/1/1977 Auburn, Placer Co., CA Marianne Beverly CLAPP [d/o John William 'Buster' CLAPP and Patricia Ann BROWNLEE] (b. 6/26/1951 Hayward, Alameda Co., CA - Living) These earlier POWELLs earned their prominence through large land holdings, military service and political service to their state and country as did many of their siblings. During the Revolutionary War, Col. Leven POWELL actively engaged in stirring up his fellow citizens to resist the tyranny of the British; became a Major of the Battalion of Minute Men from Loudoun County, Virginia and was appointed by George Washington as a Lieutenant Colonel of the 16th Regiment of Virginia Continentals, where he guarded the shores of the James River and adjoining waters to prevent Lord Dunmore from landing. He retired his military service and began serving as State House Delegates, Presidential Elector from Virginia, and the only one to vote for John Adams for President and finally as a Federalist to the Sixth Congress. In 1787 he established a town called Middleburg in Loudoun County, Virginia located midway between Alexandria and Winchester on the Ashby Gap. Two of Col. Levin's sons became lawyers, and one served in the Virginia Legislature and the 27th Congress. Another prominent POWELL was Lucien Whiting POWELL, artist, whose paintings of landscapes hang to this day in prominent locations in Washington DC and throughout the world. He was the son of John Levin POWELL and Maria Louisa GRADY. Thank you, Marianne Clagett

Hello List, I am still searching for the parents of Lewis R. Powell, born in Va. 1791 or 1792. His brother was Pressly Powell, born in Va. 1787. All records are lost from birth of these 2 men, except they were in the War of 1812, and they show up in the 1820 Census of Hall Co. Ga.. Lewis R. Powell's first wife was a Sarah, and his second wife was Elizabeth Burke, born in 1828 in S. C. which would be my Gr. Gr. Grandmother. Pressly Powell married Nellie Castleberry in Hall Co. Ga. in the early 1800's. They were both in the Land Lottery in 1828 and won draws for land in North Western Ga. They both moved about the end of 1830 to Walker Co. Ga. (Lewis), and Paulding or Harlson Co. Ga. (Pressly). If anyone knows of this family, please get in touch with me. I will be willing to share any info I have about this family. Powells I am still searching - Seymour Powell father of Thomas Powell surgeon . All from York Co in the period of 1700 - 1776. Seymour appears to have married Lucy Moss, widow of Benjamin Moss sometime after 1739. Seymour and Lucy had the following children: Thomas Powell, surgeon who married Eliz. Digges and they moved to Fredericksburg in 1776; John Powell, surgeon last seen in 1772; and Lucy Powell who married Thomas Roberts and they remained in York Co. Lucy Moss Powell deeds land to son Thomas in 1767, to son John in 1772 and includes her Roberts grandchildren in her will of 1784. She references her brother in law Benjamin Powell in deed of 1767. This Benjamin Powell was the carpenter who was prominent in York Co beginning in 1750s. When married to Benj Moss, Lucy had a son named William Moss and was carrying at the time of her husband, Benj's death, another child later named Benjamin. The estate settlement and ultimate chancery suit regarding this William Moss, revealed that he was a 1/2 brother to Thomas, John and Lucy. So still trying to find the records to prove who was the father of Seymour Powell. Mary Jean Zimmerman
