Well I shouldn't have used the copy and paste. Here is the entry for Susannah Powell Susannah Powell age 57 b in Carolina head of household found in Boscobel, Grant Co WI listed with John Powell age 26 farmer b. in WI and with Mehela Taylor age 13 also b in WI. There is another Powell family also in Grant Co and one who has a Susannah age 6, if you are interested. I was not able to find Susannah Powell age about 47 in the 1850 census in WI. Being born in Carolina would appear to be a big clue for you.
JoAnn: Is this the Susannah Powell you seek? 1860 Census -Wisconsin: _Susanah Powell_ (http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1860usfedcenancestry,&gsfn=&gsln=Powell&sx=&_F0002779=WI&_82004043=Grant&_82004044=&ti= 0&ti.si=0&gss=angs&submit.x=54&submit.y=13&indiv=1&fh=0) Boscobel, Grant, WI 57 1802 Carolina Female She is listed with John Powell age 26 b. in Wisconsin and with a Mehela Taylor (female) age 13 also b. in WI. I am pretty sure someone started a DNA test on the Powells, but I don't remember who it was. I need to get on done also since I am a direct desendant of John H Powell b 1760 in Duplin, NC Sam Powell
Absolutely and a great one with a super knowledgeable leader. Try this site and search for Powell; _http://www.familytreedna.com/name_search.asp_ (http://www.familytreedna.com/name_search.asp) Does anyone know if a Powell DNA family project has been started? I have a Powell cousin that would like to do the test. If we don't have one started, we will need a Powell volunteer (male I think) to keep the list going. Please let me know if anyone has heard or not. Linda Sue

Oh my. First, DNA tests on the Dover side have done more for us in the last year than all the research in many decades. Family Tree DNA states very clearly that DNA goes hand in hand with the "paper trail" (research and proven records). I can say that some many longtime held theories on matches went right out the window after some of the results came back. DNA provides several things, genetic matches and mismatches for the male DNA passed down from son to son, genetic distance (markers can vary ... the president of FTDNA is off in one of his markers with his own father and brother but a perfect match with his uncle), number of 25 year generations separating a match back to a common ancestor and origin group (area of origin before we got here). For the male Powell's who haven't tested some thoughts. Only the males can take the tests. I do not recommend taking any of the three tests available other than the minimum 25 marker test (37 is best because it is more refined). The costs of the tests may be a hurdle. My suggestion is that known family groups share in the cost. For the men on the Powell list ... who out numbers you ... the female side of the family who has always carried the burden (passion) in the search who cannot take the test. Much pain and anguish on the female Dover side. The men have a Powell obligation to provide what the whole Powell family would never otherwise know ... who connects in the "place and time" in the research efforts of so many ... and much of that comes from what is shared in the Powell-L group. The test is a simple swab of the inside of your mouth (take a few extra seconds on each of the two swabs). For EDZIMM's message in response to JoAnn, the bells went off "again." I can't explain the Wisconsin location but TAYLOR/ DAVIDSON/ POWELL tie into DOVER that I mentioned in the earlier message. It goes back to at least 1836 in the north part of Cherokee County, GA and carried forward in different counties and states right up to 1870 and later (including Arkansas). Same household and next door neighbors several times (too many times to be a coincidence). Habersham County, GA by 1820 (Deep Creek) was the first known place and time for this Dover in Georgia although I think DAVIDSON got there a little later. These Dover's, who I am a DNA match with came (going back) from Pendleton, SC; York, SC; Lincoln, NC; and Orange Co., NC 1750. Several side trips too. For JoAnn, the Powell/Davidson/Taylor connection is with one (maybe two) sisters and two brothers all born before 1800. Their Dover father was born 1760 in NC. For all the male Powell's, please consider taking your DNA tests "and" everyone keep sharing what you know for time and place. You'll be blessed! I have found no connection with the Powells being discussed recently but would also like to continue receiving all the information being exchanged. I have a Powell line I've been working on and am hoping to find a clue where I am stuck. My gr-gr-grandfather, Lemuell B. Powell, was born 1826 in Virginia, married Phoebe J UNKNOWN, and moved to Illinois where a son, Alfred Levi Powell was born in 1859. Lemuell was in the Illinois 77th Volunteer Infantry in the Civil War and died of pneumonia while serving. His wife died soon after and their son, Alfred, was sent to live with an uncle named Robert Powell. That's about all I have to go on and I'm still trying to find Lemuel's parents and I assume Robert's parents, too. Pearle Pruitt
Hi Ray, It's good to hear from you again. We met when we responded to a posting about a Calvin Powell totally unrelated to our Calvin Powell, descendant of Rowland. I had been at a dead end and your information put me back on the trail again. I have found out a few more things since we last corresponded. I'll list them in case you or anyone else is interested. (You may already know this information, but just in case...) Our first common ancestor - the above listed Calvin Powell and his wife, Clarissa Richardson, traveled to Oregon by wagon train from Stark County, Illinois, in 1853. They arrived in Linn Co., Oregon on 5 Sep 1853. They had settled in Stark County, IL, in 1837. In 1839 Calvin ran for election as County commissioner on the Whig ticket. He only received 10 votes (I assume his family voted for him!). He was on the first petit jury in the county. I have obtained a birth record for this Calvin from Strafford VT listing his parents as Calvin and Speedy Powell (which we already knew). Calvin, husband of Speedy, served in the Revolutionary War, as did his father Rowland. According to the book "Births, Baptisms, Marriages and Deaths from the Records of the Town and Churches in Mansfield, Connecticut 1703-1850" Speedy Davis was born on Dec 1, 1771. Speedy's father was Isaac Davis. I believe he also served in the war as there is an Isaac Davis from Mansfield listed in the"Record of Service of Connecticut Men in the War of the Revolution..." Rowland Powell and his wife Mary Ann Richardson are buried in the Savage-Delano Cemetery in Hartford, VT. Rowland is listed as one of the original proprietors of Hartford. I hope some of this is new to you. If you'd like me to send you any of the documentation, please let me know. Hello! I am in the baby stages of finding my gr. gr. gr. grandmother, Rebecca Powell, born in Tennessee about 1806. I don't want anyone to go off this list to discuss details about your Powell research, because that little detail may be just what I am looking for. That is why I joined this Powell email list...so I can see what you are finding and see where your Powells were from and who was in their family. That is precisely the info I need. Thank you. Hi, Barabara: My line is from Ambrose's parents, Robert and Sarah Powell, too. What information do you have for your William Powell (1600)? I know that Ambrose's grandfather was John Powell m. Mary Coghill in old Rappohannock Va. -but- -- Do you know who his parents were? Is that your William (1600)? Hi, Cousin Melinda! I'm still doing research on the Rowland POWELL line. I'm just dabbling along and haven't come up with anything earthshaking. The closest thing I have found was my grandfather Calvin Russell POWELL b. 1872 Oregon was married in the 1910 census to a Carrie F. (maiden name unknown) b. abt 1872 (she says she was 38 in the 1910 Census) who had been probably previously married to an EDWARDS, (his first name is unknown). The assumption is based on the fact that in the 1910 census there was a stepson in the same house by the name of Frank J. EDWARDS. It's made for a fascinating search but I have still not found anything else about her. At this time in my life I don't have time to go to the Oregon State Archives to do a search and since I prefer to do my own research (that's what's fun about this!) it will probably be some time before I solve this puzzle. I too, enjoy reading all of the other POWELL research that is going on. It helps me to learn about new ways of finding information.
