    3. Actually Ed, I call her Ole Susannah, she has been with me a long time. yes, she does state she is from the Carolina's which one? most seem to come out of SC. BUT is she a Powell? or m. to a Powell? was she married at all? one of her dau's. says her father was John Powell. she is the only one to state this. she is lost to me too as she m. a Trout, divorced, in KS. lost her at that point. Susannah d. 1866. leaving all her ch. the other Susannah aged 6 may be a grand daughter, but there were three Susannah Powell's in this line. Susannah J. a dau. m. to Jesse A. Ferrel my husband's line. Susannah, the dau. of son John who dies in Vicksburg (civil war) bur. in common trench. her mother remarries &then we lose the dau. Susannah . so I will post what I have later today or in the morning. Thanks Ed, I have been on this list for a long time as I stated before BUT you just never know when something will turn up I see a Susannah Middleton but she is not from the Carolina's. but could she be the one?? you see what I mean? I am thankful to have this site to look at. I use other means too, BUT Ole Susannah tires me out from time to time, & then I go look for something else, like my own line.thank you all so much for this plus we have a very good list mom! Merry Christmas to all & a Happy new year. Jo Ann Loghry in AR.

    3. Linda: Thanks for sharing this information. It is very interesting. They can look for certain markers in the DNA that have origins in a pretty precise spots on the globe. > For instance, my own Manary family branch is not related to most of the other Manarys on their email list. There is myself, Pamella Manary Tippett, a cousin of mine through Jonas Manary, and I believe Linda Crockett York's relative that gave the swab was related to us because they were descendants of Jonas Manary's father's siblings. So, their DNA all matched, but we were a strain off by our selves. The scientist said that our strain originated in Asia and Native Americans. The other families on the Manary Surname list came, and I am sorry because I'm paraphrasing without having the page infront of me and only going from memory, but their strains came from the Ireland area. I know they used another name. I will have to go to their site and print out that page to give you a better idea of what they say about the areas the strains came from. I believe their were four different strains and areas their families originated from. > So, what value is all of this? Well, when you realize you are related through DNA to a particular family, instead of your research being done just by you, you are able to corroborate with the family that you know is related to you. You may not see the connection right now, but when you work with another person who has more info on one part of the family and you have more info on another branch and you begin to look for the connection, it isn't long before you will find it. > This is what happened for me. I knew I had a Manary gr. gr. grandmother, but couldn't find out who the father was. I read about Pamella Manary Tippett's ancestors on the various websites. Finally, I sent away for my gr. gr. grandmother's death certificate, and lo and behold, Pamella's family was my family, too. When her father did the DNA test, we found out that our family was a completely separate strain from the folks in Canada or those in New Zealand or Australia or Ireland. So, while it is fun knowing about these other Manary's, we know our own strain is not related to them. We won't waste our time trying to find a connection from our family branch to their tree, because it will never turn up. We now know from the DNA, to search out our own strain by what the elders told their children. Her elders always said they were from France, not Ireland. And as I mentioned, the scientists say their is an Asian/Native American connection. > The DNA test will help you to pin point your own family DNA and others that are related to you so you can do more precise research and not waste precious time. It is such a time consuming project as it is. > I hope that explains it a little better. I know I have Tennessee Powells related to me, but, alas, I have no Powell connection to get a swab from. My next best hope is in purchasing Bible pages from Powell and Ellis families and hope they mention my gr. gr. grandmother's mother, Rebecca Powell's marriage to an Ellis. If I know which Ellis she married, I can look for more of their elders and hopefully peice it all together as to who her family was. > Sincerely, > Linda Lyon > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > ==== POWELL Mailing List ==== > NOTICE: Posting of virus warnings, test messages, chain letters, political > announcements, current events, items for sale, personal messages, flames, > etc. (in other words - spam) is NOT ALLOWED and will be grounds for removal. > Consideration for exceptions, contact Kathleen Burnett kathleenburnett@earthlink.net > > ============================== > Search Family and Local Histories for stories about your family and the > areas they lived. 3. Do you have any proof of the VA Powells. I can go back to Elias b. 1754 in Culpeper, moved to Orange Co. NC/VA, and Burke/Caldwell Co. where he died and is buried. He also had a brother named Robert. I have some documentation indicating John Powell and Mary O'Neal are Elias's parents, but from there it is a guess. -----Original Message----- From: powelldm@bellsouth.net [mailto:powelldm@bellsouth.net] Sent: Wednesday, December 22, 2004 6:56 PM To: POWELL-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: RE: [POWELL] Family DNA Jim That is great news about the new DNA list. 3. Hi, I have been on this Powell list for a long time. I have yet to see a Powell listed that I could connect with. My line is the John A, George, & Elisha Powell---VA, OH came to MS in 1830's. I am hanging in there because some day, some time there just might be something that will knock down my brick wall. Merry Christmas too. 1. Where oh where did my Powell live????
    2. Virginia A.
    3. Andrew Jackson Powel was born in March of 1824. In one census, I don't remember now just which, he was born in Georgia. On the next one, he was born in Tennessee. On the 1900 Census for Caldwell County, Kentucky his place of birth is listed as North Carolina.. His daughter, Delilah Powell Nichols has her father listed as being born in "Alabamy" although her pother, lists their father as born in North Carolina. Where the heck was this man born?????? Who were his parents? Virginia in Seattle

    3. I personally think it's great there has been an increase in posts concerning the Powell genealogy. That is what it is for. There is no telling how many hundreds of posts I have deleted over the years when they don't have any info for me to study on. I have even saved posts that months or years later I come back to for a bit of information. We all have a delete key! Dickey

    3. Patrick and others, I know the list has been very active the last few days. Many messages have dealt with DNA which may be of no interest to you. I have requested a Powell-DNA mailing list, however to person who sets up the new list has a broken ankle, thus the new list are being delayed. Please bear with us. The list will slow back down! (which I hate to see) If you fill you must leave, here are the instructions. This instructions were copied from the mailing list instructions. Unsubscribing. To leave POWELL-L, send mail to POWELL-L-request@rootsweb.com with the single word unsubscribe in the message subject and body. To leave POWELL-D, do the same thing with POWELL-D-request@rootsweb.com. Unsubscribe from POWELL-L Unsubscribe from POWELL-D (digest) I apologize to the list administrator for stepping in, but I feel the DNA project messages are part of the problem. Thanks to all. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! 3. Jim,i agree with every thing you say but there are sites which promote the idea a DNA test as a way to find distant Ancestors.I would advise any Researcher not to rule out any Branch of a Family with a DNA Test. There are just way to many if's and's or but's involved.I won't get into the other factors you Mentioned but to us who have been doing this Genealogy thing for a long time know they are very Real and play a very important part of Genealogy. Thanks for the input,Jack Powell

    1. RE: [POWELL] Family DNA
    2. Dennis Dover
    3. Jim is correct in what he say's. We are fortunate on the Dover DNA to have a large enough sampling within our sub group (there are at least seven different unrelated Dover families) that something new popped up in a discussion with the DNA people ... we have a "preliminary" ancestral DNA signature of the first known father of all of us ... his 37 markers. The signature reflects the mutant markers of individuals in the group sampling that can and will change a little bit when more results are available. I have concrete proof on my family in 1850 in Alabama and research clues and coincidences via census and other records before that. The oldest proven ancestor in the group was born 1760. We know where from his RS. Most of my clues follow the time and place from that proven ancestor so it becomes a matter of filling in the 90 years when the science part of it suggests we have a common ancestor by 1800. Somewhat corny but a very good analogy given to me by FTDNA on mutant changes (certain markers that do not match) ... the first ancestor (signature) was like a spring. The water from his spring flowed in rivulets ... different directions because of mutants (pebbles, rocks, etc). Interesting on the Wisconsin Powell census ... there was a Lewis Powell nearby in 1850 that was born 1763 in Georgia. It's confusing with all the Cader and Moses Powell's, but the possible father of the oldest Dover mentioned above born in 1760 is the same John Dover mentioned in very early Georgia deeds next to Moses and Cader Powell on Upton Creek.

    3. I understand that a DNA test is a simple swab of the inside of your mouth (take a few extra seconds on each of the two swabs. My question is: What do they have to compare it with if everybody is dead and has been for years? I know that there is probably a simple answer but I just don't get it. Jane Foley

    1. RE: [POWELL] Family DNA
    2. Jim Barrett
    3. Jane, The hope is that you will find someone else who matches your DNA. Maybe they have their line traced back a generation or two farther then you do. You can then start with their most distant ancestor and work forward. In my wife's case there were two men in Georgia, about the same age who both had sons with the same name and the same year of birth. We hadn't been able to determine which of the sons my wife descended from. There were men in that DNA project that descended from each man. My wife had a male cousin tested. His results matched one line and not the other, so we knew which line to work on. In the case of my Barrett family we have four or five 3rd, 4th, and 5th cousins who have submitted samples and had matching results. With this information we know what my 3rd Great Grandfather Barrett's DNA looked like, just as though he had submitted the sample. If we find someone who matches his DNA there is a very good chance there is a relationship. We just have to try to find it. To know what the distant ancestor's DNA looked like it is better to have samples from several relatives as we have done. If a mutation or two has occurred this helps determine the ancestors true DNA. There is nothing wrong with a mutation. If they didn't occur we would all have the same DNA and there would be no value in the testing. But they do occur. They can occur at any birth event and they must occur at a birth event. Therefore it is possible for a son to have DNA that does not match his father, but this is usually only by a marker or two. If the father and son don't have a close match you need to look for other reasons.
