    2. Patrick & Pearle
    3. My query was for a Lemuell B. and Robert Powell who were brothers in Illinois. Lemuell was married to Phoebe (Phebe) UNKNOWN and served in the 77th Volunteer Infantry of Illinois. Lemuell died while serving of pneumonia and his wife died a month later. A son, Alfred Levi POWELL, went to live with an uncle, Robert POWELL. Alfred later moved to Kansas. I'm looking for parents of Lemuell and Robert. Both were born in Virginia, Lemuell in 1826. Pearle Pruitt

    3. Dear Virginia If you'll check the list for the message I sent to Dave Brown, you'll see my latest information on June's book. Apparently she researched a great many names - probably one of them was Orton - but that name is not included in the book I have because she had not ever been able to make a link between her James Powell and my Ambrose. What is your Powell line? Do you connect to Ambrose? Nice to meet with you. Mary-Gene Page California Virginia A. wrote: > This is the first time I have seen reference to this book. 3. June Powell Orton did a great deal of research on Powells and Holts trying to link her James Powell of Adair County to the other Powells in KY. Unfortunately, she was stricken with a brain tumor and died in August 2003. She had mentioned to me that she had mimeographed a book on the Ambrose line but was out of copies, so I hounded her until she sent me a copy, which was early in 2003. After I learned of her death, I phoned her daughter, Cathy Armstrong in Cedar Rapids IA who inherited all of June's genealogy material. Cathy is trying to get the material - 9 books worth, she said - ready to publish. I told her I would not, then, do anything with the book I have, except that I would pass on individual information. I made that offer earlier on the mailing list and on Genforum. Here's what June had on Lewis (she did not have the name of Betsy Choate as Lewis' wife, but I believe that the affidavit made by Ambrose Jr [husband of Minerva] makes it fairly sure that Betsy was his wife's name) and the families you name: Lewis' children: John md HARDEN Hardin md BATTLES Isom/Isham md KNOX Mark md WILLIAMS Polly md TURNBOW Charity md COUCH Ambrose md Nancy (___) Sarah md TURNBOW Elizabeth md CASKY Martha "Patsy" md RILEY Lewis md HINSON Nancy Hardin was bn 1791 in Burke Co, NC (apparently Hardin's grandparents and most of his immediate family moved into KY/TN about 1803/4). He married Angellica BATTLES who was born 1791 also in NC. They moved to Arkansas Territory c1831 and were located in Conway Co, AR in the 1850 census. Children of Hardin and Angellica: Ambrose b 1827 TN Lewis b 1831 TN Pheby b 1836 TN Isom b 1838 TN [Note that the place of birth for the children shows them in TN until 1838, although June believed they moved earlier.) June does not have a John born to Hardin - which does not mean there was not a son she was unaware of. I'd certainly appreciate your sending more information on your John's birthdate and birthplace along with any source you have for his father's name. I checked her index as well and she did not have a Rachel Lewis listed, so she didn't have any of it. Much of her data came from her own research, but she made many contacts with other Ambrose descendants over the years, such as yourself, and that is how her database grew. Regarding Lewis' father Ambrose, June was never satisfied on the name of his wife - she thought that Margaret KNOX was a second wife. My descendancy is through Lewis' brother, William who married Mary DAY. Greetings Cuz! 3. This month, I am making a final copy of my research on our Powell family. I would be thrilled to hear from other relatives before I finish it. My history starts with a John Ruben Powell born in NJ, and of Welsh ancestry. He was married to Lucretia Hallowbaugh (varied spellings) supposedly in Chicago IL in the early 1840's. Lucretia states in later documents that he was a sailor. From that point John Ruben Powell disappears, but his widows Civil War pension for her next husband states that Powell went to the mines in CA and died there in 1852. We have no idea if any of this is accurate. I found in the 1880 census Pioneer City, Deer Lodge, MT a John Powel age 72 born in NJ both parents born in Wales a miner who lists himself as single. I have not found a similar John Powel or Powell in any census prior to this. Did our John hide from the census takers? His age indicates he would have been born about 1808. This man surely had a life before and after Lucretia (if he is indeed her husband) and I would like to learn more about him. The children listed for John Ruben Powell and Lucretia Ann are Mary Elizabeth, James C, Charles Henry, and Lewis born between 1845 and 1853. This family was in Manitowoc Co WI in 1850 and 1855 census, and then in Stark and Henry Counties IL until moving to Ellsworth County, Kansas and Cleveland Co OK Gayle in Kansas

    2. Ellen L Martin
    3. Mahala is a Hebrew name that became somewhat popular in the early 1800s. In most cases there's probably no other connection, but, of course, a child may be named for a close relative who was previously named Mahala for whatever reason. Lots of Old Testament and/or Hebrew names were used in America during the1800s and there's been a revival of this practice in the last few decades. Sometimes it seems like the more remote the reference, the better.
