    2. Powells in NC. Seems there is quite a lot of information on the Powells from North Carolina lately and I would like to ask for a little assistance is sorting my mystery out. As most of you know Naming patterns were followed pretty closely back in the 1700 and 1800's as follows; 1st son, Fathers father 2nd son, mothers father 3rd son, father 4th son, fathers oldest brother 5th son, fathers 2nd oldest brother or mothers oldest brother 1st daughter, mothers mother 2nd daughter fathers mother 3rd daughter, mother 4th daughter, mothers oldest sister 5th daughter, mothers 2nd oldest sister or fathers oldest sister My Powell family followed this pattern pretty well as follows; Alexander POWELL, born April 17, 1786 in North Carolina was married to Martha BROWDER born Feb 3, 1787 in North Carolina. In 1792 I have Darius Browder, father of Martha Browder in Chatham County, NC so I assume this is the area of NC both families came from. The POWELLS, BROWDERS, WOOTENS and CRUMP families all seemed to turn up in Roane county TN after 1800 so I assume they migrated together. Now, back to the naming paterns in my search for Alexanders father and mother. The first child born to Alexander and Martha, a daughter, was named Nancy M. Powell, 1812-1886 (wife of David BRYAN). According to the pattern she was named after Martha Browders mother who was Nancy Jane CRUMP so this fits the pattern. The second child was also a daughter, Susan Powell, b. 1814 (no other info known on her) who should be named after the fathers mother. This I do not know yet but I am looking for a Susan Powell it seems. The third child, also a daughter was named Cynthia Powell, 1816-1882 (wife of Thomas Jefferson Smith) who should be named after the mother. This does not seem correct as the mother is Martha. The fourth child, another daughter was named Mary Powell, 1818-1820 who should be named after the mothers oldest sister. Mary BROWDER, b. 1793 was Martha's oldest sister, The pattern fits. The fifth child was a son, William A. POWELL, (1822 husband of Mary Ann Douglas), who should be named after the fathers father. So, if the naming patterns are right, I am looking for a William Powell and wife Susan fron Chatham County, NC. However lets keep going on the naming patterns with the rest of the kids. The 6th child was Martha Powell and 1825-1915 (wife of William H. Wison) and she was named after her mother Martha Browder. Pattern is off by one daughter on this one. The 7th child was another daughter, Francis POWELL 1827-1896 (wife of Abner Bryan) and she was named after her mothers second oldest sister, Francis "Betsy" BROWDER. This would be correct except for the # 3 child Cynthia was out of place. The 8th child, a SON, Darius John POWELL 1829-1903, husband of Sarah Caroline WOOTEN, was named after the wifes father, Darius BROWDER. This is correct in the pattern again so I can only assume that my search for William Powell and wife Susan is correct. I have done a bit of looking around but my supply of NC records is limited and I was unable to find much on the Chatham county web site. However I do find a the following; William POWELL, Mar 7, 1783 deed with a James POWELL Mentioned. Index to deed book C, 1783 - 1786. Comfort POWELL and Nathanial POWELL (deceased) Sept 22, 1783 There is also a pension application for a William POWELL of Wilkes county, NC. The application was for service in the NC militia and was approved on April 30, 1833 and William was age 74. Not sure if the application tells more or not. Do any of you Powell researchers have any info on a William Powell or wife Susan that might help in my quest for family knowledge? Do any of you have access to the above records that might tell me more than the index does? Thanks in advance for looking at my info and I hope the naming patterns might help some other researchers just getting started as they have me. John Owen

    3. In September I stopped at the Johnston Co NC History Center, they had two folders of Powell material which at the time I could not go thru. So I paid $119.00 for them to copy it for me I believe $50.00 for copying their time. So the rest was material. I have not actually studied everything in these folders I believe alot is on a John Powell who's son is a Cader or Kader Powell. If interested let me know I will see what is there. 3. This is interesting reading when John M. Toler told about his growing up in Wayne Co NC he wrote about the Neuse river , he also stated his mother's father Peter POWELL was from Scotland. I pasted part of the message from the earlier email. I would like to see the land grants of Peter Powell in Dobbs Co NC. I believe I have in a tax period of 1769 Peter Powell and William Powell being taxed. John Marshall Toler named a son Levi Toler. Levi is not mentioned in any Toler Family other than John Marshall Toler family. The earliest record, which I can identify as referring to your John Powell, is where he made an entry for a warrant to survey land in then Johnston County (now Lenoir County) on 7 October 1756. He apparently had been there for some time as the survey (enclosed) states, "Being the place formerly surveyed for himself." I have enclosed all the records I could find which mention this John Powell. It appears that there was another John Powell who received a land grant in present Johnston County. This grant was for land near Neuse River and the present Johnston#8209;Wayne County line. Your John Powell's land was between n Loosing Swam p and Briery Swam p. These two creeks join to form Stony town Creek. I have enclosed two copies of a map, which identifies these creeks. I have marked on one to make in easier for you to identify. I have also enclosed papers concerning a land grant in Dobbs County for Peter Powell. I do not believe he was part of your family. This grant is for land i! n! present Wayne County some distance from your John Powell. ----- Original Message ----- From: "nancy stanley" <nancstan@yahoo.com> To: <POWELL-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, January 11, 2005 10:15 AM Subject: Re: [POWELL] James Powell - Craven,Greene,Halifax,Pitt County > Hi Jin > my sister Rachael sent you some deeds here are two letters also. > Nancy Stanley > > > > TIMOTHY KEARNEY > > Genealogical Research > > P.O. 3. Hi Jin my sister Rachael sent you some deeds here are two letters also. Nancy Stanley TIMOTHY KEARNEY Genealogical Research P.O. Box 27645 Raleigh, NC 27611 (919) 494#8209;6786 19 November 1997 Nancy Powell Stanley Dear Nancy: Sincere apologies for taking so long with your Powell assignment. I have been studying the case for weeks, and have about reached a conclusion. You have done a wonderful job with your research and have left nigh a stone unturned. There is actually nothing further I can add to this case. Your papers, however, contain significant clues, which should aim toward an evidenciary conclusion. We must realize that your Powells lived in a burned county, which is a problem beyond our control. However, the few details left to us can speak through the smoke if we identify the clues accurately. PROBLEM #8209; of course, the main problem is lost records. Putting that aside, and knowing that Levi was born circa 1796, a look at the 1800 census record you sent shows two Powell families of John and Daniel, both approximately the same age and both with young males in the household, where Levi could fit in either case. Also, this 1800 list is alphabetical; therefore, it does not help in regard to neighbors. In 1810, Daniel Powell is listed between David Grant and Richard Hill, both names associated in the deeds you sent, and John Powell shown elsewhere. Again, both Daniel and John have young males that Levi could fit in, and both Daniel and John appear to be of the same age group and appear to be brothers rather than father and son. The data indicates the same generation. By 1820, only Daniel appears in Lenoir County, which is very important. I do not consider John's omission to indicate he died, but rather he moved out of the county. Considering the number of people in John's household previously, one would think that if he died, another Powell would be shown in the census even if it was the widow if not an oldest son. Only Daniel appears in 1820 with enough males in his household to include Levi age 16#8209;26. The 1830 Census is very important! Daniel no longer appears, but an Elizabeth is shown and is no doubt his Widow. Levi appears as head of house for the first time. Only Olive Grant separates the two. By 1840, only Levi appears in the census. PROOF: The deed of conveyance regarding the sale of Falkner land from Lewis Bryan to Walter Dunn dated 13 January 1821 (very soon after the 1820 Census) describes the division of property belonging to William Falkner and "... adjoining Fredrk Baker, Daniel Powell and others ...... NOTE: Levi was living beside Falkners in 1860. The deed from Council Phillips & wife Rhody to Levi Powell dated 4 February 1839 includes the description "...to Frederick Baker's corner thence with his line to Levi Powell's line thence with said Powell's line..." This reveals that Levi already had land and his boundary was part of this new acquisition of land and it bordered Frederick Baker. Eighteen years earlier, Frederick Bakers corner bordered Daniel Powell. The combination of all the records, and most especially, the above two deeds, prove that Levi was the son of Daniel and Elizabeth Powell. There is no other alternative, and the suggestive evidence is strong and clear. Congratulations! As you know, Lenoir County was formed from Dobbs in 1791. Nearly all of Dobbs' records were also lost, therefore, we jump from one fire to another. As with Lenoir, both Daniel and John appear in the 1790 Dobbs County Census on page 136. Daniel with one male over 16 (himself) and 1 male under 16 and 5 females. He is listed between two Falkners (Fortner). John Powell is shown with only 2 females besides himself. Only a couple of early tax lists survived in Dobbs County. The 1780 Tax list shows Daniel Powell and Fanny Powell listed together and also John Powell (transcription enclosed). The same associative names appear on this list. In 1769, only Hardy Powell and William Powell appear in Dobbs County. Both records are insufficient to establish a link. I checked Bible records, Secretary of State records and other sources without being able to locate any additional details. I also checked New Bern District papers but they end in 1810 #8209; too early. The analysis of the data you accumulated however is in fact sufficient evidence to conclude that Levi was son of Daniel. I have returned all your papers, as they appear to be your original copies. I have also enclosed the Pearcy Morgan deed you requested as well. I wish there was more I could do, but the lack of surviving records prevents any further examination. However, the link from Levi to Daniel is very clear Sincere thanks for the opportunity to study and work your case, and please do give me a call if you have any questions. And again, I truly regret the delay. I hope to clear my books by year's end if possible. 3. Our POWELL line has been in Ohio for generations, and their wills, deeds, marriages etc. are recorded in Champaign Co., Ohio, where I grew up, and where many cousins still reside. They migrated first to Fayette Co., KY, but soon moved north into Ohio c 1807-1810. 2. Jim Barrett
    3. Seborn J. Powell b. 01 Aug 1829 in GA, married Malinda Dupree. She was born 06 Jan 1834 in Scott Co. AR. They live in the Logan/Scott Cos., AR area and in Texas (Hood Co.?) as three of their seven children were born in Texas. Their last child that I know of was Isaac F. Powell, born in Arkansas about 1872. There is an Isaac F. Powell listed on the 1910, 1920, and 1930 censuses for Hood Co., TX. His age on these three records would agree with a birth in 1871-1872, but his place of birth is listed as Texas on all three records. His father's place of birth is listed as Mississippi and his mother's as Arkansas. The mother's birth place was the only one that matched what I expected. I have recently found another Isaac F. Powell. He is listed as a boarder on the 1900 Indian Territory Census for Sapulpa, Creek Nation Northern District, born 1871, born Arkansas, father born Georgia, mother born (blank). Then I found Isaac F. Powell on the 1920 census for Lincoln Co., Colorado, age 47, born Arkansas, father born Georgia, mother born Arkansas. Here he has a wife Ada M. with all three birth places listed as Missouri. Does anyone have any additional information on either of these Isaac F. Powells? Thanks. 3. I do not know if this is the information you have, but this is what I've got on Ambrose. I also have Ambrose as being the son of John Powell and Mary O'Neal and a brother to my Elias, Jr. b. 1754. http://genforum.genealogy.com/powell/messages/938.html In message #938 dated 12 Nov 1998, I gave you an abstract from Ambrose Powell's will. Since that time I have received quite a bit of conflicting information about who his family was, so I am going to re-state the will here, but reconfiguring it so that it is a little clearer. Oct 1827 Ambrose POWELL died intestate leaving: Elias John Peter Margaret [POWELL] KELLY (wife of Alexander KELLY) Rachel [POWELL] PRIEST (wife of Thomas PRIEST Sarah [POWELL] BROWN (wife of Thomas BROWN) also Also Mary [DAY?] POWELL (widow of William POWELL)... , deceased who died leaving as his heirs at law: Ambrose Nicholas Polly William Oliver Sally Elias Powell HOLT (his late wife Margaret POWELL) Wiley SHEPHERD (his late wife Rachael POWELL) Thomas HOLT (his late wife Nancy POWELL all of whom are heirs at law of **William POWELL, deceased** also Enos RAMBO(W), deceased (late wafe Polly POWELL), together with Elias RAMBOW Enos RANBOW and Lytle RAMBOW heirs at law of said Polly [POWELL] RAMBOW, also the following children of Lewis POWELL, dec'd son of Ambrose Powell: Isom John Hardin Mark Polly [POWELL] TURNBOW (wife of TURNBOW) Charity [POWELL] C[K]OUCH (wife of KOUCH) Sarah [POWELL] TURNBOW (wife of TURNBOW) Ambrose Elizabeth [POWELL] CAREY/CASY (wife of CAREY/CASY) Patsy [POWELL] RILEY (wife of RILEY) Lewis Nancy as heirs at law of said Lewis POWELL, dec'd, all of Wayne Co, TN. It seems to me that these names are placed in other families by some researchers, but this should clarify (or confuse) the issue. A question remains for me: Did William have a son Nicholas AND a son William, or was the younger William his grandson, son of Nicholas? ************************** Noticed on the Court Document I have about the Law Suit, a Nicholas Powell is the Defendants Grandson from the state of Ky., Oliver Powell is the Defendants Grandson also from Ky., Polly Powell Def. He lived with his parents in the 1850 & 1860 censuses and next door to his parents with Martha E. CONOVER household in 1870 census. William Basset remained single. 2. Mary-Gene Page
    3. Dear Pat, Somewhere in the archives is a copy of that court case which I had typed a few years ago. Perhaps it's on GenForum the Powell forum. I believe Ambrose was born in Burke Co NC, and it was his father who had come there from VA. Incidentally, there is a question as to whether there were two wives, one Margaret HOLT and one Margaret KNOX, or whether Ambrose had married a widow Margaret HOLT KNOX. I tend toward the second view, but don't know for sure. I am not exactly sure where in Virginia, that Ambrose came from, to live in Maury Co. Tn., but have a copy of a sumation of a court case in that county that involved Ambrose Powell's estate. I do not exactly know how to post all this info on the Powell List, and do not have time to type it all out, so if any one would like to contact me about this info, please email me at this address: springerpc@msn.com<mailto:springerpc@msn.com>. Any one else that might like to have this info, please email me also. If you would like to post it, it would be fine with me, but make sure it is ok with the List Mom. 2. I had not been receiving any email from the Powell D for sometime. Today I got about 10 Digest emails. Something must have gone wrong. Nancy in PA
