Barnabas Powell b. abt 1755-58 in probably Eastern NC> Here is another son of John and Elizabeth Powell-- a younger brother to Absalom. In the Lucas -Powell book he is 1] of age in 1789 [ not sure how old that would be] 2] witnessed a will in 1805 in NC 3] appears on the 1790 census of Bladen County NC with 1 male over 16 [himself presumably]2 males under 16 & 2 females - seemingly a wife , 2 sons and a daughter, which would make him at least 25 one would think. His Brother Absolom was born 1752, and his younger brother Isaac said to be born 1760-1770, so 1755 might be about right for him....making him 25 in 1790. There is no wife's name, marriage date , nor Children for him only " it is said that his family went to Florida" On the Cumberland Co NC Census 1850, [just sent to me by a cousin I would love to connect to..] There is Barney Powell , age 74 [b. abt 1776?] with Priscilla " age 23 " 1827 Jane " age 19 " 1831 James H [A?] " age 17 " 1833 and Abby " age 14 " 1836 The cousin believes this "Abby Powell" is her own ggrandmom, said to be born 1839 on her gravestone. I beleive the Barney here is too young to be Barnabas b. abt 1755-58, but might be a son of his. [ and possibly too OLD to be the father of Priscilla, Jane , James and Abby-- maybe their Grandfather?] Do any of these names look familiar to anyone here? Thanks for any help Steph Powell Cecil stephaxi@mindspring.com
Hello. Is anyone on the list researching Captain Oliver Hazard Powell who married his cousin Lucinda Powell in 1860 and lived in Bladen Co [or Colombus Co] NC? According to the Lucas- Powell book, two of his sons lived and died in N. central Florida. as did my GGranddad Barney Powell, supposedly b. 1851 in NC, married in Clay county in 1877, and may have been on the Cumberland Co NC Census in 1860 with the family of Benjamin and Elizabeth Powell , both born abt 1815 NC Others in this family were Nancy, b. abt 1841; Mary E. b.abt 1843; Charlotte, b. abt 1843; William H. ,abt 1850; and James abt 1853. Still trying to make a connection to the descendants of John and Elizabeth {Lee?} Powell whose descendants lived in the same area of NC-- Bladen-Columbus- CumberlandCounties. Capt Oliver H. was their great grandson. [Absolom II& Susan>, Absolom I & Mary> John & Elizabeth] Thanks Steph Powell Cecil stephaxi@mindspring.com
Need parents, sibling, marriage date of Mattie Demel Powell, born somewhere in Texas Dec 1891 married Willey McNabb "Mack" White in Navarro County, TX @ 1910 died in Dallas TX 9 May 1975 thanks David Strickland Carrollton, TX
David, Since Mattie died 1975, you should be able to get a copy of her death certificate from Austin. If the person providing the information knew it, the certificate should include her place of birth and the names of her parents. You might even be able to get it from the city or county of Dallas. I think the city will have it if she died within the city limits and the county will have it if she died outside of the city. Hello! I am the gr. gr. gr. granddaughter of Rebecca Powell, born abt 1806 in Tennessee. She married an Ellis, 2nd marriage to Jonas Manary at Morgan County, Illinois on Sept. 12, 1838, 3rd marriage to James Atchison born 1792 in Virginia took place at Mahaska County, Iowa on Oct. 27, 1859. I don't know who Rebecca Powell's parents were. I am assuming she must have been the daughter of the Rebecca Powell of the 1820 Census for Rutherford, Rutherford County, Tennessee, but I have no proof. They only listed the name for the head of the household, which was Rebecca Powell, white, widow, age 45 and upwards. They listed that she had three daughters, one daughter aged 10-15, which means they would have been born 1805-1810. I'm hoping this was my gr. gr. gr. grandmother. There are two daughters listed age 16-25, which means they were born between 1795-1804. Unfortunately, they don't list the name of the deceased husband, which has really stifled me from figuring out who this family is and what became of them. If you think we may be related let me know. I notice that you have a Pigott in your family tree. I have Pigott's in my family tree, too. My Pigott family descends down from William Pigott, born in Glanworth, Cork County, Ireland. He married Catherine Noonan. Their children were: 1. Maurice Pigott, born 1831 in Dunmahon, Ireland. He married Margaret Connery on Feb. 11, 1850 at Glanworth, Cork County, Ireland. 2. Mary Pigott, born June 11, 1833 Parish of Glanworth, Cork County, Ireland. She married Milo Morris Cushing at The Dalles, Wasco County, Oregon on November 18, 1925. She was my gr. gr. grandmother. 3. Eliza Pigott, born in Glanworth, County Cork, Ireland, married a Reynolds, had daughter Emma and some sons, I do believe. I have more information about the Pigott's that are in Ireland and some that are in England. I have the family tree stemming down from these families, so if you need this info, just email me at lyonfam@warwick.net and mention Pigott in the subject line. Let me know if you think your Powell family may be connected to mine. If I knew which Ellis she married, and where they married, where they lived, who his family was, maybe I could find out more about my gr. gr. gr. grandmother's family. Does anyone have any information on the 3 Reid brothers that married 3 Powell sisters which were the daughters of James Powell and Rebecca Bynum of Blount Co., A? Thanks! Jane Foley
My Powell was Mary Ann Powell born 1810 in Warren Co., TN and had a sister, we believe, named Manda who married a Baker. Mary Ann married William Hiram Heard in AL and started a family in Fayette Co., AL John Heard

A quick message to give you all a hint about obtaining more information from this site: We who only read the "Digest" do not have the time to read all the messages so we look at the Subject line and if a FULL NAME and town catches our eye, we read the message....just putting "Powell" there tells me nothing. Try using the whole name and country of birth and state of settlement after immigration and see if you don't have more responses from us very busy people. Thanks much. Jo-Ann SEITZINGER
The Patterns are seldom followed with absolute certainty, especially after the first 3 or 4 children but it is helpful to find that some semblance of a pattern is duplicated amongst siblings families and generations. It shows, at the very least, that certain families may be related. Another name that frequently shows up is that of a deceased sibling and/or aunt/uncle -- honoring such a relative, particularly one who died young, can throw the traditional naming pattern off, but it may also help arrange the earlier generation, indicate approximate date of death etc. Different ethnic groups adhere to somewhat different patterns and traditions. The common names like John, William, Elizabeth, Mary, Sarah etc. frequently appear in both the father's and the mother's family so that it would have been impossible to adhere strictly to the pattern without repeating the same name several times within the "new" family. Even though both maternal and paternal grandfathers are named John, we are not likely to see the two eldest sons both named John. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Stephanie Cecil" <stephaxi@mindspring.com> To: <POWELL-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, January 16, 2005 1:50 PM Subject: Re: [POWELL] Re: POWELL-D Digest V05 #7 > Wayne and others....please note that these "Naming Patterns" were NOT > absolute... > Consider this family of mine..... Wayne and others....please note that these "Naming Patterns" were NOT absolute... Consider this family of mine..... I am descended from the second of TWO brothers.... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 1.James R/S McMullen [1760-1794 son of William and Margaret "Nancy"] m. Sarah Vick [ 1762- 1842 d/o Benjamin and Mary ] ....2. William [1742-1847]m. Elijah ? 3. William [ Father and mother's brother] 3. Elizabeth [mother's oldest sister] 3. Nancy [father's grandmom and mother's sister] 3. Luvenia [ Mother] 3. Thomas [mother's father and brother] 3. Noah [?] ...2. James [1788-1862] m. Rebecca Fain[1793-1858 d/o Thomas and Mary] their issue 3. Martha [?] 3. William [father's and mother's brothers] 3. Lavinia [ mother's sister] 3. John [?] 3. David [?] 3. Malcolm Laurence [ ?. my ggrandpa] 2. Sarah [1790-1827] m. Henry Marshall These three were the only children of James R/S[revolutionary soldier] and Sarah McMullen. He died young in an accident. Thomas R/S Fain did have brothers named John and David and James R/ S McMullen had a brother named Eli, maybe Elijah.? but I cannot find a "Martha , a Daniel, a Noah a Malcolm nor a Laurence" anywhere and ,as you see , the naming pattern is somewhat irregular. The mother's oldest brother was Matthew and the father's father;s other brothers were Robert and Nathaniel [no sisters known] and then there is the father's mother's father Benjamin Vick??? Of course ,it is also possible that these names were given to infants who died which was VERY common in the early 19th century, but they were usually recorded anyway in these families. One wonders if perhaps those " left out" names belonged to family members with whom the parents had fallen out at the time the children were born. William and Lavinia's children were b. between 1804 and 1830 and James and Rebecca's, between 1813 and 1840. Interesting anyway Regards. Steph Powell Cecil stephaxi@mindspring.com
I'm interested in your info. My Powell was Rebecca Powell, white, female, born in Tennessee about 1806. So, I am very interested in your info of them being born in NC and turning up in Tennessee by the 1800's. I did find a Rebecca Powell in the 1820 census for Rutherford, Rutherford County, TN. She was white, female, widow and between 45 years and upwards in age. She had three daughters listed on the census. Unfortunately, they didn't list names during that year, but one was between 10-15 years old, so born between 1805 and 1810. That would match my gr. gr. gr. grandmother, Rebecca Powell, whose parents and siblings I am searching for. The other two daughters were 16-25 years old, so born between 1795-1804. The mother would have had to have been born 1775 or earlier. She was a widow by this 1820 census. Does any of this information match any info from your family? Do you have a membership to Ancestry.com? I do, but have just started a job with an inventory company and haven't got much time to do research this month. When I do, I will try to look info up for you if you don't have a membership with them. Hoping for matches to line up pretty soon! My Powell relation is Rebecca Powell, she was white, female, born in Tennessee about 1806. She married a man of surname, Ellis, when they married or where, I do not know. She was in Morgan County, Illinois when she married again to Jonas Manary. He had a bad habit of marrying women, having children with them and then leaving them for another without benefit of divorce. He left my gr. gr. gr. grandmother Rebecca and their daughter, Emily Jane Manary and left for Keokuk County, Iowa with his last wife, his fifth wife, Elizabeth Sarah Menard in November of 1843. After his death in Nov. 1852, my gr. gr. gr. grandmother Rebecca was able to remarry and married James Atchison on Oct. 27, 1859 in Mahaska County, Iowa. James was from Virginia and born abt. 1792. I've made contact with some of his heirs. I would love to find out which Powell family my gr. gr. gr. grandmother came from in Tennessee. I did find a Rebecca Powell in an 1820 Census of Rutherford, Rutherford County, Tennessee. She was listed as being white, female, widow, 45 yrs. old or upwards. She had a daughter between 10-15 years old. I'm hoping this daughter was named Rebecca and was my gr. gr. gr. grandmother. If anyone out there is descended from this family, please get in contact with me. My home email is lyonfam@warwick.net. This is the closest I have found to possibly being her family. Unfortunately, during this year they didn't list the children's names, only the head of the family, so I just don't know if this little girl was her. Hoping to hear from descendants of the above 1820 Census family! I just wanted to thank John on the tip with the naming patterns. I am new to genealogy and was not aware of this! I can't wait to see how this plays out in my own Powell family! Pearle Pruitt
