    3. I believe Dorcus was part of the Moses Powell line, correct? Read what I posted the other night regarding the Powells from Wake County to Hertford County....Gosh one would think that Spotswell and Cotton were family surnames. The name Dorcus is sticking with me in relation to the Powells. Do you know what line they go back to? Arcell ----- Original Message ----- From: "Vicky P. 1. Re: [POWELL] information re: N.C. Powells
    2. Hi Hannah & Arcell, Thanks for the Powell info. I still think Moses Powell is my line but just don't know which of his sons ( Cader b c 1750 or Lewis bc 1758). They both would fit but I'm leaning toward Cader. I really need to do some research at the Dallas library. Hannah, I found this in my notes - Lewis Powell ( George, John, Richard) b 1720 -25 Bertie co NC d aft 1790 prob Robeson co NC m Rebecca Field issues: 1 Lewis Powell Jr 2 Joseph Powell 3 Cader Powell Source: Lucas book If Moses Powell b c1725 -30 is my line, I'm looking forward to researching his wife's family (Mary Williams). This Williams family left a good paper trail. Ruth in Tx

    3. I will have to check and see....geeze I have to look through a disc since my computers crashed.....I know Cottons first half of 1800s, were in the Sawyer line but do believe they hailed from Eastern North Carolina and were around the same time the Powells were there in the Chowan and Pasquotank region, 1720-30 or so...maybe earlier. I will try and look tomorrow regarding the cottons. Arcell ----- Original Message ----- From: "Vicky P. 3. I, too, have the Cotton name in my Powell lineage. Alexander Spotswood Cotton Powell was born in Georgia in 1807, son of Alexander and Dorcas DeBerry Powell. Alexander and Dorcas were born in Hertford Co., NC and Hampton Co,NC, respectively. Alexander's mother was Alse Cotton. I have always thought Alexander Spotswood Cotton Powell was an interesting name. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Arcell Sawyer" <searching3@nc.rr.com> To: <POWELL-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, February 08, 2005 11:22 PM Subject: Re: [POWELL] Re:Duplin Carteret and Bertie County, N. 3. McNeal Powell m. Parmelia Frances Randall 1 Sep 1834 in Fayette Co. TN. She was b. abt 1819 in Alabama. I have done some research on her family without much luck. I probably need to go after them again. She actually is McNeal's second wife. He m. first Jane Bryan 25 Aug 1831. I have found no record of children from this marriage. I have his civil war military and pension records, plus a family history written by a grandaughter. I'm not sure when or where he was born. I keep an eye on anything that relates to the Powells in Chatham Co. since he said that is where he was born (at least once, his kids all say on the 1880 census that he was b. in TN.) No one researching those Powells recognizes him. Thanks for you suggestions. Jan On Thursday 10 February 2005 12:48 pm, Arcell Sawyer wrote: > Maybe he took the mother's maiden name. 3. Ruth, My Powells are buried in Hood Co., TX. Working back they were in Scott and Logan Cos., AR, Tallapoosa Co., AL, Muskogee Co., GA and Columbia Co., GA starting Isaac Powell born there 15 May 1796. Before that I would guess North and South Carolina. I descend from William George Washington Powell, one of Isaac's sons. C. I have Lewis Powell & Cader Powell in my linage but I'm not back to NC yet. I'm in SC (ABT.1780) but I think we are headed to NC. I've about decided my Powell line is of Moses Powell but would like a little more documentation to be sure. I've had to work back from Texas, La, Miss, Ala, Ga, SC. My Powell line didn't rush to Tex, they kinda took their sweet time getting here. They would live ten years in one state & then move to the next state & stay for another ten years & t hen move again - but always moving west. I finally found their graves after a ten years search. They are buried in Hill co Tx about a 2 hour drive from me. Please tell me about your Powell line. 3. Maybe he took the mother's maiden name. I have not seen that name as a first name - Yet! 1771 Chatham Co. was established from Orange County so you may look in Orange County. I know there were Powells in Orange County. That is why I try to pinpoint where they lived on a map, or the general area because as county lines changed.....even if they did not move....10 years later they can be in another county. Since many lived on waterways it is not too difficult. I see his wife is Permilia Frances Randall and try looking to see where she came from....they had to meet somewhere! Look up his service in the Union Army and it should give his enlistment place. I don't think you can do but so much on the internet, leads mostly, you will probably need to go and research and usually the folks are pretty good about helping. I have been to the State Archives in Tennessee and one of the most helpful I have been in. 3. I have been reading the NC Powell exchanges with interest. I am looking for the parents of McNeal/McNeil Powell. On his enlistment papers for the Union Army he states he is 45 (b. 1819) b. Chatham Co NC. The 1860 census lists him as age 50 (1810), b. TN. The 1850 census lists him as age 51 (1799), b. TN. His is an unusual name and if anyone has come across him, I sure would appreciate hearing about it. I first find him in 1834 in Shelby Co TN. Children are John G, Eliza, William Jackson, Sarah, Benjamin, James Henry, Thomas Alexander, Phil, and Hulbert Brown Powell. 3. If you are looking for Powells in South Carolina you might want to check the South Carolina Archives On-Line Records Index at http://www.archivesindex.sc.gov/ . Click on "Search Page" in the lower right hand corner. The following is an example of a plat record: Series Number: S213190 Volume: 0015 Page: 00165 Item: 00 Date: 1784/08/08 Description: POWELL, ANN, PLAT FOR 640 ACRES ON WATERS OF RAFTERS CREEK, CAMDEN DISTRICT, SURVEYED BY ISHAM MOORE. Names Indexed: POWELL, ANN/MOORE, ISHAM/MATHIS, JANE/COOK, BENJAMIN/ Locations: CAMDEN DISTRICT/RAFTING CREEK Type: PLAT/ The first four items are required by the archives to identify the record you are interested in if you want a copy of the document. "Date" and "Description" are just that. "Names Indexed" includes the name of the person the plat was surveyed for, the name of the person making the survey, and based on the plats I have ordered, the names of the people who have land that joins the described property. In this case Jane Mathis and Benjamin Cook. Several other types of records are indexed including wills. The records date from 1675 to 1952. 3. I and others have been searching for this connection for probably 10-15 years....and revealed in one small record in a county....I would have never looked in. The catch is Onslow County was established from New Hanover 1734. Duplin Co was established from New Hanover in 1750. Then we find that Bertie Co. where they are also found was established in 1722 from Chowan. I have very little research on New Hanover as yet. So if you are researching 1740s to 1760s you may be looking at more than one county. 2. Dear Arcell, I just wanted to say that the information below is from Sally Koestler's web site, Sally's Family Place. She put my relatives, Powell, Bishop, and Gordon, on it. My Powells connect with hers. Mine are all at http://www.sallysfamilyplace.com/ under NEIGHBORS. I'll send Sally your emails in case your information is something that she would like to have. She isn't a member of the Powell Mailing List. Virginia Virginia Powell Street _________ > Subj:Re: [POWELL] Re:Duplin Carteret and Bertie County, N. 3. Hi Sam. When I go back I will be sure to look more. These Counties were all changing around this time. I did pull the deed abstract name index for Craven County and the following Powells names were found, but have not looked at any of the deeds. Capt. John Powell and a John Powell, many, many deed references for Craven. Ann, Capt (maybe John), Fielder, Goerge, Margaret, Moss, Osborn, Phebe, Pherebe, Sarah, William Wilson. There is also a mention of Powells Creek.
