    3. To Hannah, Pat (Powell) Springer here..............................I think if I remember right, there is a Joseph Powell in the 1820 or 1830 census of Hall Co. Ga.. Do not know what line he belongs to. Hannah, have researched the John Crawford Powell family, and found out that his parents were possibly William Powell Jr. and Adlaid Crawford, married in Madison Co. Virginia in or around 1760 or after 1770. This info was on a Query on a Powell website, about 10 years ago. Thank you so much for your help, and hope this info about Joseph will help you and someone else. Thanks again, Pat (Powell) Springer springerpc@msn.com<mailto:springerpc@msn.com> ----- Original Message ----- From: Ellen L Martin<mailto:elmartin@localnet.com> To: POWELL-L@rootsweb.com<mailto:POWELL-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, February 13, 2005 7:41 AM Subject: [POWELL] More POWELLs in VA We have a Joseph POWELL, b abt 1730, place unknown, who turned up in Frederick Co, VA and d 1771 in Hampshire Co, VA (now WV). Don't have a line on any siblings but the names Samuel and Abraham show up prominently among Joseph's descendants. His wife was Christina or Christen FRY, b 1733 - her family had a number of Moravian connections. Most of their 8 children moved on to KY and spread out from there. 3. Hi Pat ..... Hannah Powell here...... THE STORY: JOHN CRAWFORD POWELL came to the Sequatchie Valley with 3-of his brothers from Virginia on a flat bottomed boat. He married Phoebe Jackson. "Crafford/Crawford" Powell stayed in what is now Marion County, Tennessee and his brothers went further south. We've been trying to trace Lewis R. (c.1792-) from Virginia to Georgia. Is it possible that he is one of these 3-brothers of John Crawford Powell? Remember that we also have Joseph Powell (1785-1854) who was also born in "Powell Valley" Virginia and lived there on the Tennessee border of Madison/Limestone Alabama and then Giles County Tennessee. One of Lewis R.'s sons "Ambrose/Ambers" also lived in Giles County. Have you looked at this from the Virginia to Tennessee to Georgia direction? This one has been bothering me for a long time because Joseph (1785-1854), Lewis R. (1792-) & Presley Powell could very well fit into this family story. ----- Original Message ----- From: "PATRICIA SPRINGER" <SPRINGERPC@msn.com> To: <POWELL-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, February 12, 2005 6:10 PM Subject: Re: [POWELL] Re: NC Powells>Georgia > Thank you Lee for the idea about the DNA Test. 2. In a message dated 02/10/2005 10:43:31 PM Eastern Standard Time, mart1@pineland.net writes: My line is: James Powell,b.1730 in Virginia m.Alse Cotton, dau. of Alexander Spotswood Cotton & Ann Foster. Sons in Georgia-Allen Beverly Powell, Alexander Powell and Abraham Foster Powell-Telfair Co., GA and McIntosh Co., GA Their are other children of James and Alse that I do not have listed here. I never can find anything concrete on James. The Lucas Powell book recommends that those interested in this James Powell, should consult the five Volume work by Folks Huxford " Pioneers of Wiregrass, Georgia" and various legal documents of Judge Huxford's in the Georgia Genealogy Magazine. I personally have not researched this James Powell, but am currently working on a Chancery Suit of Brunswick Co Va ( Moss Vs Powell) in which a James Powell becomes the executor of a John Powell dec. 1794/4. The Chancery of Brunswick Va covered the counties of Greensville, Brunswick, Mecklenburg and Lunenburg. There are 44 pages of documents that I am transcribing and many of the referenced information dates back to the 1740s. Unfortunately, Lucas or his contributors did not use or reference these Chancery Records. I have great respect for Rev Lucas Powell's work due mainly to the records he references giving us the opportunity to know where to search, however many researchers contributed to that work and he cautions that further research and records are needed to provide conclusive decisions on various Powell lineage's. In addition, he also points out discrepancies in conclusions of those that contributed to the book and many are this line located in Ga and NC. I can attest that in my line, many records were missing and assumptions were wrong. Hope this helps in some way. MJZ

    3. OH....by the way.... it was BENJAMIN POWELL & LEWIS POWELL signing John SAWYERS will... I was looking at this record thinking this is our JOHN SAWYER with the POWELLs in Duplin County: 1758/10/04 NCDuplin- Page 425 Deed LEWIS POWELL to Edward CARTER of Johnston Co. Dated: Oct 4 1758. 5 pounds for 300 acres on the east side of a large cypruss swamp and the said land taken up and pattented by William WILLIAMS and mentioning 640 acres and bearing date 1745. Land was in Duplin Co. but patented in the County of New Hanover. Tract was the upper part of the said tract it being divided by a parcel of blazed trees betwen Richard BUSH and Edward CARTER being the same place where francis SABNDER now lives on. Wit: Bird LANIER, John SAWYER and Ephriym LAWSON, Deed proven July 13 1759 The Powells moved into Edgefield in 1762... Maybe the Sawyers at the same time. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Arcell Sawyer" <searching3@nc.rr.com> To: <POWELL-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, February 10, 2005 7:10 PM Subject: Re: [POWELL] information re: N.C. 3. Hi Arcell..... Hannah here.... The Cader Powell (c.1848/50-) in SC is the son of Moses Powell Sr. (c.1725-) and he was born in NC Duplin Co. He is the grandson mentioned in the will of ANTHONY WILLIAMS dated 1851. I think he is just of age when he was patenting land in Edgefield. He went with his father Moses Powell Sr. to Georgia in 1773 with a wife and a son age 2-months (born July) and applied for land. They both received land on the "Red Lick" in Georgia. The Powell family still owned a lot of land in SC when they moved across the river into Georgia to get some of the recently ceded Indian Lands.
