    1. Book by Charles Smith Powell
    2. Sharon Rauworth
    3. Hello, I have just joined the list and wondered if anyone had a copy of the History and Genealogy of the Powells in America by Charles Smith Powell. The copies I have seen have the first 28 pages missing. I am looking for information on an Abigail Powell, daughter of William. The HALL genealogy has an Abigail POWELL marrying Israel HALL. There is a Powell HALL in this lineage that I believe might have been named after his grandmother. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Sharon Rauworth Mesa, Arizona

    3. Hi! Yes they were definitely all in the NC area in the 1850's. I have heard many tales of the Powel/Powells. I was also told a name that I havent seen Strickland Powell (I have to go into my notes) I dont have much on it, but said he always heard this name in our family. I know my names, but there isnt much of a record on them... ----- Original Message ----- From: EDZIMM@aol.com To: POWELL-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Saturday, February 26, 2005 9:38 AM Subject: Re: [POWELL] Philipson - Powell In a message dated 02/26/2005 9:03:37 AM Eastern Standard Time, kdpcabrio@comcast.net writes: Hi are you speaking of the book The Powell Families of VA and the south by Lucas? In Lucas' Foreward of that book, he outlines what he did, was trying to do etc and somewhere near the end he mentions that his book is an "Encylopedia of the eight major Powell Familes of the Southern States". Needless to say, that was a subjective statement but he put together what he could find and must have missed a few. What are your families of Powel/Powells? Think all of us researching that Powell name have records with it spelled Powel as well...court clerks really just did their thing with the spelling of most any name. :>) There seem to be a long line from North Carolina in the book. Perhaps your Powell line originated from the North rather than from the Va /Maryland areas that he covered. Just a thought. I have been transcribing 44 pages of a Chancery Suit - Brunswick - Adm of Moss Vs Adm of John Powell, in which a Mary is a widow of a Powell, Dr. Robert Philipson and Robert Wynn. I chose the ordeal to actually find out the name of the Powell that Mary was a widow of but alas....it is not revealed in all these court papers! These papers do identify many others: Her sons were John Powell who died in Brunswick Co in 1791 with his son James Powell of Brunswick as administrator. Her son Robert Powell probate. Nov 1791., of Greensville Co. with son Robert Powell Jr as administrator as well as Matthew Davis as administrator. Robert senior's wife Sarah Powell is also mentioned. Also inclued are the Philipson heirs of Cary, Chisman and Moss. I will provide an abstract of it all at a later date. Until then.....where is there a record that says that Mary Powell widow of Thomas married Dr. Robert Philipson? Thanks for any help you can offer. My William Wade Powell (my grandfather) was born in 1884, Meigs Co., OH. So far I haven't come across any more William Powells in my line. While we're throwing out Powell names here, my grandfather's brother was Arthur Hallam (Uncle Hal) Powell, born abt. 1881 in OH. According to the US census, he lived in Pike County, OH in 1900, Maryland in 1910, and PA in 1920 and 1930. I've now hit the proverbial brick wall. Any chance that Arthur "Uncle Hal" Hallam Powell rings a bell for anyone on the Powell list? Thanks, Marge Campbell

The agency has put on the Web 3.2 million records for veterans buried at 120 national cemeteries since the Civil War. The VA's Nationwide Gravesite Locator also has records for some state veterans cemeteries and burials in Arlington National Cemetery since 1999 (http://www.cem.va.gov/). The navigator includes names, dates of birth and death, military service dates, service branch and rank if known, cemetery information and grave location in the cemetery. The VA will withhold some information, such as next of kin, for privacy purposes. For more details, see this article. For more on military death and burial programs, see the Death & Burial Overview. 3. You have to copy and paste in two steps. Don't click on the first line. Just copy it to your browser address window and then come back and copy the second line that starts with a dot and ends with 1054316014 and past it into you browser address window at the end. I had the same problem when I tried to access the site. BTW it does mention our Rowland Powell and a few generations under him. I copied the whole document to my word processor so I could go over it at my leisure. It's 293 pages long! Happy hunting! 3. My ancestor is James POWELL born 1772 in Wales, he married Mary Moore in about 1800 and they later emigrated to America with 3 or 4 children. I believe they lived in Pennsylvania during the early 1800s and by 1822 this family had settled in Richland county Ohio and developed their farm. James was said to have been an ardent Whig, he raised his family in the Christian faith and was a successful and good man. James died Nov 28, 1858. Mary and James had eleven children of which Margaret is my gg-grandmother. She married Jessie Huston in 1831. The other children are: Matilda, Nancy, William, John, Abner, James, Jane, Myers, David and Mary. Names of their spouse include Terman, Cline, McConaghy, Modi, and Schumaker. If you see any possible connection please contact me GWgenie@alltel.net Happy hunting!
